future life which will be formed as a result. He may see the same<br />

life as he has wished for at the shrine, or it may be a different<br />

one, which is more often the case. Whatever the new life may be<br />

the yogi again analyses the nàma-råpa phenomena of the new<br />

person and correlates the five future effects viz., vi¤¤àõa, nàmaråpa,<br />

saëàyatana, phassa and vedanà (see Chapter 8, page 312)<br />

with the five present causes. If he can actually observe the five<br />

future effect being formed as the results of the five present<br />

causes, then he is assured convincingly that the present and<br />

the future correlation of the Law of Dependent Origination<br />

holds.<br />

The causal relations as described by the Law of Dependent<br />

Origination and the 24 conditions of Paññhàna are the major causal<br />

relations which govern the arising and dissolving the mental<br />

and corporeal phenomena occurring in ourselves as well as in<br />

others. There are certain immediate causes which the yogi has<br />

to investigate.<br />

For example, four causes must be present for the arising of<br />

cakkhu-dvàra vãthi (the eye-door cognitive series). These causes<br />

are the eye-door, the visible object, light and manasikàra<br />

(attention). similar four causes are respectively required for the<br />

arising of the other door-cognitive series.<br />

Again in each cognitive series (vãthi), kusala cittas (moral<br />

kamma-formations) arise as javanas if there is ‘yoniso manasikàra<br />

(wise reflection), and akusala cittas (immoral kamma-formations)<br />

arise as javanas if there is ‘ayoniso manasikàra’ (unwise reflection).<br />

Depending on these kamma-formations again, rebirth consciousness<br />

as well as other resultant consciousness arise in the<br />

next life.
