1 Anattànupassana is Su¤¤ata-vimokkha-mukha.<br />

It realizes that the nàma-råpa formations are void of ‘atta’<br />

or ‘self’ or ‘ego’. Su¤¤ata refers to ‘void of atta.’<br />

2 Aniccànupassana is Animitta-vimokkha-mukha.<br />

It understands that the nàma-råpa formations are<br />

formless, signless or imageless. Animitta refers to<br />

signless state of nàma-råpa.<br />

3 Dukkhànupassana is Appanihita-vimokkha-mukha.<br />

It understands that the nàma-råpa formations are just<br />

suffering or misery. So it develops no desire (taõhà) for<br />

nàma-råpa formation. Appanihita refers to the state of<br />

desirelessness.<br />

In Visuddhi Magga (Chapter XXI, paragraph 70), the<br />

following message is given:<br />

1 “Whosoever being filled with determination (adhimokkha),<br />

considers all formations as impermanent<br />

(anicca), such a person attains the signless liberation.<br />

2 “Whosoever being filled with tranquility, considers all<br />

formations as painful (dukkha), such a person attains the<br />

desireless liberation.<br />

3 “Whosoever being filled with wisdom, considers all<br />

formations as not-self (anatta), such a person attains the<br />

void (su¤¤ata) liberation.<br />

The Seven Stages of the Path of Purification<br />

It is clearly stated in Mahà-satipaññhàna Sutta that the only way<br />

towards absolute purity and extinction of all sufferings is the<br />

Noble Eightfold Path (aññhaïgika-magga).<br />

The eight constituents of the Path can be divided into three<br />

groups called sikkhà (learning or training):
