2 Animitta-vimokkha – emancipation through the concept<br />

of signlessness by aniccànupassanà.<br />

‘Nimitta’ means mark, sign, image, object, etc. So<br />

‘animitta’ means no mark, no sign, no image, no object,<br />

etc. While practising aniccànupassana, the yogi is<br />

observing the incessant dissolution of nàma-råpa in the<br />

five aggregates all the time. In the ultimate state the five<br />

aggregates, which are nothing but mental and corporeal<br />

groups, have no form and shape nor any sign or image.<br />

So while the yogi is observing the incessant dissolution<br />

of nàma and råpa, he observes no form and sign at all;<br />

he is having the concept of signlessness. If he emancipates<br />

from defilements through aniccànupassana, his<br />

magga-phala or emancipation is known as ‘Animittavimokkha’.<br />

3 Appanihita-vimokkha – emancipation through the concept<br />

of desirelessness by dukkhànupassana.<br />

The yogi, while practising dukkhànupassana, is<br />

observing the unsatisfactory or suffering nature of<br />

nàma-råpa in the five aggregates all the time. So he has<br />

no desire for nor attachment to the nàma-råpa. In other<br />

words he is having the concept of desirelessness<br />

(appanihita). And if he emancipates from defilements<br />

through dukkhànupassana, his magga-phala or emancipation<br />

is called ‘Appanihita-vimokkha’.<br />

Threefold Vimokkha-mukha (Triple Gate-way to Liberation)<br />

‘Mukha’ means ‘door or gateway’. The three doors to emancipation<br />

or liberation from the entanglement of defilements refer<br />

back to the three anupassanàs.
