9 Kàyagatàsati<br />

Reflection on the 32 impure parts of the body such as head-hair,<br />

body-hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, sinews, bones, marrow, kidneys,<br />

heart, liver, diaphragm, spleen, lungs, bowels, mesentery,<br />

stomach, faeces, brain, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, lymph,<br />

tears, grease, saliva, nasal mucus, articular fluid and urine.”<br />

In <strong>Buddha</strong>’s time many monks attained arahatship by<br />

meditating on these impure parts. Kàyagatàsati develops asubhasa¤¤à<br />

(notion of loathsomeness) on the body just as asubhabhàvanà<br />

does. This loathsomeness of the body leads to dispassion,<br />

i.e. the suppression of ràga (lust).<br />

10 ânàpànassati<br />

Mindfulness on the in-breathing and out-breathing of one’s<br />

respiration.<br />

A brief comment on Anussatis<br />

Of the ten Anussatis, kàyagatàsati can lead to the first jhàna;<br />

ànàpànassati, to all the five råpàvacara jhànas; and the rest, to<br />

neighbourhood concentration (upacàra-samàdhi).<br />

Buddhànussati and maranànussati are included in the four<br />

guardian-kammaññhànas. By reflecting on the virtues of <strong>Buddha</strong><br />

repeatedly for a long time, one’s body becomes venerable as a<br />

pagoda and so it may not be insulted by beasts, ghosts or wicked<br />

persons.<br />

Also one has the notion of living together with <strong>Buddha</strong>,<br />

and thus one develops faith on <strong>Buddha</strong>, moral shame and moral<br />

dread to a greater extent.<br />

Reflection on death repeatedly enables one to comprehend<br />

the fleeting nature of life. When one has the notion that one’s
