Six Names for Sadda-pa¤¤atti<br />

The spoken words of different languages are all sadda-pa¤¤atti.<br />

Each and every sadda-pa¤¤atti has the following six names.<br />

1 Nàma<br />

It is the name of something and it is always bent towards<br />

the meaning it could express.<br />

For example, the word ‘bhåmi’ could express the<br />

meaning of ‘land’ and so it is always bent towards that<br />

meaning. Moreover, because it could express so, it always<br />

let the meaning ‘land’ bend towards it as its own meaning.<br />

2 Nàma-kamma<br />

The name bhåmi has been given to it by some important<br />

learned men in the past. So it is also known as ‘nàma-kamma’.<br />

3 Nàma-dheyya<br />

The name bhåmi has been long established by learned<br />

people. Thus it is also called nàma-dheyya.<br />

4 Nàma-nirutti<br />

The name ‘bhåmi’ lies hidden before it is spoken, and it<br />

should be exposed by expressing it in language. So it is<br />

called nàma-nirutti.<br />

5 Nàma-bya¤jana<br />

Because the name bhåmi can show its meaning very clearly,<br />

it is called nàma-byanjana.<br />

6 Nàmabhilàpa<br />

The word bhåmi should be spoken with the intention of<br />

expressing the meaning of it. So it is called nàmabhilàpa.
