5 Disà-pa¤¤atti<br />

Such terms as ‘east’, ‘west’, ‘north’, ‘south’, ‘direction’ and<br />

the like, are so named on account of the revolution of the<br />

sun and the moon, etc. They are called ‘disà-pa¤¤atti’.<br />

6 Kàla-pa¤¤atti<br />

Such terms as ‘morning’, ‘noon’, ‘afternoon’, ‘evening’,<br />

‘night’, ‘time’ and the like are so designated on account of<br />

time. They are called ‘kàla-pa¤¤atti’.<br />

7 âkàsa-pa¤¤atti<br />

Such terms as ‘cave’, ‘well’, ‘hole’, ‘tunnel’, and the like are<br />

so named on account of empty space (àkàsa). So they are<br />

called ‘àkàsa-pa¤¤atti’.<br />

8 Kasiõa-pa¤¤atti<br />

Such terms as ‘pathavi-kasiõa’, ‘àpo-kasiõa’, ‘tejo-kasiõa’, ‘vàjokasiõa’,<br />

and the like, are so designated on account of the<br />

predominant element in mahàbhåta. They are called ‘kasiõapa¤¤atti’.<br />

9 Nimitta-pa¤¤atti<br />

Such terms as ‘parikamma-nimitta’, ‘uggaha-nimitta’, ‘patibhàga<br />

nimitta’ and the like are so designated on account of the<br />

degree of concentration in meditation. They are called<br />

‘nimitta-pa¤¤atti’.<br />

Note:<br />

The various forms of attha-pa¤¤atti do not exist in the<br />

ultimate sense. They refer to objects made up of real things<br />

but appear in the mind as images.<br />

Though they do not exist in the ultimate sense, they<br />

become objects of thought in the form of shadows of<br />

(ultimate) things. They are used in conversation to express<br />

one’s view and to let others know one’s wish.
