The sense sphere refers to the four apàya abodes, the human<br />

abode and the six deva abodes. In all these abodes sensual pleasure<br />

is enjoyed.<br />

The fine-material sphere refers to the sixteen planes<br />

populated by råpa-brahmas, i.e. brahmas with forms or bodies.<br />

The immaterial sphere refers to the four planes populated<br />

by aråpa-brahmas, i.e., brahmas without forms or bodies.<br />

Brahmas are more powerful than devas. They enjoy greater<br />

peace and longer lives than devas.<br />

Kàmàvacara Cittas<br />

(Consciousness mostly experienced in the kàma-loka)<br />

There are 54 kàmàvacara cittas which may be divided into three<br />

classes:<br />

1 Akusala cittas (immoral consciousness) – 12<br />

2 Ahetuka cittas (rootless consciousness) – 18<br />

3 Kàma-sobhaõa cittas (beautiful consciousness in the sensesphere)<br />

– 24<br />

The total number of kàmàvacara cittas is 12+18+24 = 54. They<br />

will be named and explained further below.<br />

It is recommended that the reader or learner should become<br />

familiar with the Pàli names mentioned in this book. They are<br />

short and precise and will help one to understand the translations<br />

or the writings in other text-books or treaties on Buddhism.<br />

Akusala Cittas (Immoral Consciousness)<br />

‘Akusala’ means ‘immoral’. People usually commit wicked and<br />

evil deeds with akusala cittas. So akusala cittas bear bad results.<br />

The 12 akusala cittas may be further divided into three classes:<br />

1 Lobha-måla cittas (consciousness rooted in greed or<br />

attachment) – 8
