5 Four Ariya-saccas (Four Noble Truths)<br />

‘Sacca’ means ‘truth’. The truth that can be understood fully<br />

only by ariyas (noble persons) is called ariya-sacca (Noble Truth).<br />

There are four Noble Truths which are the briefest synthesis<br />

of the entire teachings of the <strong>Buddha</strong>. They encompass every<br />

thing and contain all those manifold doctrines of the threefold<br />

cannon (Tipitaka).<br />

They are truly universal laws of the highest form for those<br />

who see them clearly become ariyas.<br />

The <strong>Abhidhamma</strong> names, the common names and the<br />

meanings of the four Noble Truths are described in Table 7.3.<br />
