Andaja-pañisandhi and jalàbuja-pañisandhi are also collectively<br />

known as gabbhaseyaka-pañisandhi.<br />

Applications<br />

1 Woeful persons in niraya are born by the way of<br />

opapàtika-pañisandhi only.<br />

2 Petas and asuras are born by either jalàbuja-pañisandhi<br />

or opapàtika-pañisandhi.<br />

3 Animals are born by all the four modes of conceiving.<br />

4 Human beings are first born by opapàtika-pañisandhi at<br />

the beginning of the world, and later by either jalàbujapañisandhi<br />

or samsedaja-pañisandhi.<br />

5 Earth-bound devas are born by either jalàbuja-pañisandhi<br />

or opapàtika-pañisandhi.<br />

6 Celestial devas and brahmas are born by opapàtikapañisandhi<br />

only.<br />

Life-spans of Beings<br />

1 Woeful persons in the four apàya abodes do not have<br />

fixed life-spans. They suffer in woeful states in<br />

accordance with their kammas. Their age-limit differs<br />

according to their evil deeds. Some are short-lived and<br />

some are long-lived.<br />

During the <strong>Buddha</strong>’s time the monk Tissa, on<br />

expiring, became a flea for seven days in the new robe,<br />

which was offered to him by his sister and which he<br />

was attached to at the time of expiring.
