‘Duggati’ means ‘woeful course of existence’ while ‘sugati’<br />

means ‘happy course of existence’.<br />

‘Duggati-ahetuka-puggala’ refers to persons in apàya, i.e. the<br />

four ‘lower worlds,’ namely, the animal world, the ghost-world,<br />

the demon-world and hell (niraya).<br />

‘Sugati-ahetuka-puggala’ refers to persons who are retarded,<br />

blind or deaf by birth in the human-world and the catumahàràjikadeva<br />

abode.<br />

‘Dvi-hetuka-puggala’ refers to human beings and devas who<br />

are born with ¤àõa-vippayutta mahà-vipàka cittas which lacks<br />

wisdom. These persons cannot attain jhànas and maggas in the<br />

present life however much do they try. They may, however,<br />

become ‘ti-hetuka-puggala’ in the next life as the result of their
