Six Types of Visayappavatti<br />

‘Visayappavatti’ means ‘the presentation of sense-objects at the<br />

sense-doors’. There are six types of visayappavatti – four at the<br />

five sense-doors and two at the mind-door.<br />

A Visayappavatti at Pa¤ca-dvàras<br />

(Presentation of sense-objects at the five sense-doors)<br />

1 Atimahantà-rammaõa<br />

5 sense-objects with very great intensity causing a<br />

very long cognitive series of consciousness to arise.<br />

2 Mahantà-rammaõa<br />

5 sense-objects with great intensity causing a long<br />

cognitive series of consciousness to rise.<br />

3 Parittà-rammaõa<br />

5 sense-objects with slight intensity causing a short<br />

cognitive series of consciousness to arise.<br />

4 Atiparittà-rammaõa<br />

5 sense-objects with very slight intensity causing<br />

no cognitive series to arise.<br />

1 Vibhåtà-rammaõa<br />

clear presentation of sense objects.<br />

2 Avibhåtà-rammaõa<br />

obscure presentation of sense objects.<br />

Vãthi-cittas and Vãthi-vimutti Cittas<br />

(Vãthi-consciousness and Vãthi-freed consciousness)<br />

Those cittas which participate in the cognitive series of consciousness<br />

are call vãthi-cittas.<br />

Those cittas which do not participate in the cognitive series<br />

of consciousness are call vãthi-vimutti cittas.
