MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF CAMBRIDGE
Dear Friends:
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIVISION iv AUGUST 2008
BUSINESS AND
INDUSTRIAL
DIRECTORY
It is a pleasure to present the 2008 edition of the Cambridge
Business and Industrial Directory. As we look into the future,
it is evident that Cambridge has a bright one. Whether it is
rejuvenation and restoration of the core areas, to the
development of new industrial parks, we believe these
exciting new developments will have a positive impact on our
community, our residents and our businesses.
It is with pleasure that I share some of the highlights on behalf
of Cambridge City Council about the important refinements
that are shaping our strategic directions in the year ahead.
The
New City Hall Building will officially open for business
early in February bringing together the historical old City Hall
with a fresh new building that will enhance the workplace and
offer more high-performance “green” amenities. What’s also exciting is the building’s potential
for the highest certification from the Leadership in Environmental Design (LEED) experts which
will make this the first City Hall in the country to achieve this recognition.
Core
Area development continues to be a focus for Cambridge. Blending the opportunity to
provide the very best mix of development from luxury condominiums and affordable housing to
new retail will boost the downtown skyline.
The
American Standard Building will take on a new life turning the landmark industrial building
into an environmentally friendly, residential-commercial development. Luxury condominiums
and apartments for active seniors would be key parts of the project, as would solar power and
recycled materials.
The
Royal Hotel will get a new lease on life with the transformation of the main floor into
commercial space, while the upper two floors will become upscale loft apartments.
There
are plans to preserve the Old Post Office’s magnificent history and Galt’s architectural
beauty. Once revived, the intention is to open a fine dining restaurant with private conference
rooms.
On
the former Kressview site, major development plans are underway that include a hotel,
condominiums and a conference centre. This announcement has been well received by the
local business community and plans are progressing towards a start date in 2009. Coupled with
this is the decision of Cambridge Council to pass the site plan for Waterscape, a condominium
structure on the Grand River just south of Galt Collegiate. Once again, the downtown core has
been buoyed with this good news along with the announcement that the historic loft
development at 19 Concession Street is going ahead.
