Me and my partner are initiating a bespoke facility that will
create the opportunity to come up with creative solutions
to the issues of our time; climate change. We believe
that climate change can be tackled only by collaboration
between various specialities. Science, politics, law, design,
architecture and art all play a part. Floda31 will be a place for
specialists from various disciplines to meet, collaborate and
create solutions to climate issues.
A couple of friends and I formed Bullet in 1998. We all
colloborate on the creative concepts, and I am responsible
for realizing many of these. My work spans various media,
but I specialise in printed matter. Bullet’s strength is creative
solutions – we will use any media necessary to communicate
the right message. Bullet was awarded a bafta for interactive
learning in 2001, a World e-science award in 2005 and was
a Webby award honoree in 2009. Our work ranges from
Contemporary Dance to Action Sports, with clients such
as Nike, The Royal Academy, Siobhan Davies Dance,
Cape Farewell, Philips and EA Games.
Exhibitions
I have created a series of posters as a sort of graphic
evolution experiment. This is a growing series featuring
themes such as global warming and weapons of mass
destruction. This is an ever growing series and some or all
of them have been shown in the following exhibitions:
Interests
I love problem solving. In my job I get a variety of
communication problems, all of which can be solved in
many ways; I love working out what would be the best way.
Furthermore I have a passion for functional objects. I like
products that have been designed cleverly and improve
the quality of life. This could be a well-designed tool or a
printed map. Examples of designs that impress me are the
London tube map, bicycles and ceramic knives.
Besides design, I love the outdoors and things you can do
there; snowboarding, hiking, swimming and rock-climbing.
I enjoy cooking (and eating). I like to read, some of my
favourite authors are Paul Auster, Dave Eggers, John Irving,
Ira Levin, Haruki Murikami and George Orwell.
mentoring schemes for artists and producers. All this you have done with us:
by artists for artists. But most importantly, you have created the only national
artist led network: you have developed a community. Before online social
network sites became de rigueur, you were using the latest technology to help
us exchange ideas and offer us support.
Contemporary performance, live and interdisciplinary practices are about
the eventual meeting of an audience. It is a terrible truth that the process of
coming to that encounter can often be a very lonely experience indeed. Many
of us are solo practitioners, stuck in a bedroom, studio or rehearsal space,
staring at a flickering cursor, a blank sheet of paper or an empty wall and
wondering what to do next. Even when you have the ideas, the question still
begs: what next? That is why New Work Network is so important. You have
researched our needs and informed us of opportunities; you have lobbied
and advocated, commissioned new work, raised the level of debate, set up
New Work Network (NWN) celebrates 10 years as the
only national membership organisation providing artists,
producers and curators in the new work sector with an
accessible network and support structure.
In 1997, NWN’s inaugural meeting ‘Towards a New Work Network’
brought together over 70 artists and representatives from the new
work sector. The group’s main concern was the marginalisation
of new and experimental work. A network and voluntary Steering
Committee was consequently formed to enable the sharing of
experiences, problems and information. In March 2004, NWN
obtained Company Limited by Guarantee status and the artist-led
Steering Committee became a Board of Directors. Today, NWN
employs a full time coordinator, a part time administrator, several
freelances and a voluntary Board of Directors comprising of arts
professionals including: artists, lecturers, executive directors,
managers and producers.
As an artist-led organisation, NWN strongly believes in facilitating
initiatives that respond to wider changes in arts and culture as well
as the changing needs of its membership. NWN has worked in
collaboration on a variety of professional development programmes
including Expo Mentors (2001-2003) and DIY (2002-2007). Critical
debate and advocacy are also key strands of work that include an
online forum space; commissioned articles; and events such as
‘Nurturing Risk’ at the Arnolfi ni Inbetween Time festival (2006).
info@newworknetwork.org.uk
www.newworknetwork.org.uk
One of the most successful and innovative schemes developed by
NWN was Networked Bodies (2002-2005). It was a unique project
awards scheme, which via an online submission enabled members
to discuss, review and vote for projects. Networked Bodies was
an important testing ground for the creation of a signifi cant online
facility. With social networking sites such as Facebook, Bebo and
Myspace highlighting the uses and popularity of online networking,
NWN is a leader in a burgeoning sector.
NWN works in partnership with venues, higher education institutions
and other arts organisations across the UK. In particular, NWN is
part of the Live Art Advisory Network with Live Art Development
Agency and Artsadmin. It is also a key partner of Live Art UK, a
national network of live art promoters.
Over the years NWN has supported a number of artist-producer/
curators and facilitated ‘connector’ events enabling practitioners
to network at a variety of art venues and festivals. From this
work, NWN has created its 2007 Cultural Leadership ‘Activator
programme’ – a professional advancement programme supporting
emergent cultural leaders, which enables them to enhance their role
in instigating and facilitating new work practice throughout
the country.
NWN is proud of its legacy and role in supporting arts professionals
and looks forward to another ten years of acting as a collective
voice championing the new work sector.
