Keeper Trophy Donated Annually by: The Solhaug Family & Bruce Nicolle 

The Doc Sam Award has been donated in memory of 

Doctor Sam Solhaug who died in 1996 and who was 

a long time and original member of the Wayzata 

Yacht Club. Known to all as Doc Sam, he loved 

sailing and would spend the majority of his free 

time from spring to fall sailing. He also enjoyed 

racing and had a persistence and "never quit" attitude 

that was equally as important as winning. He 

instilled and encouraged this spirit in others. 

Selection: Awarded annually to the sailor 

selected by the WYC race committee as one who 

has demonstrated Doc Sam's love of sailing, love of 

racing and in particular his persistence and "never quit" 

attitude during races.

Commodore’s Special Award 

The Commodore’s Special Award was started 

by Bob Slocum to recognize help that he received 

in the years of low water at the yacht club. 

This award is an adjunct to the Bail Bond Trophy, to 

be awarded by the commodore for special service 

to the club. It is not necessarily awarded every 

year, and is intended to be reserved for special 

occasions where an individual or group of 

individuals performs in an outstanding fashion.

Andy Crew Award 

The Andy Crew Award was given to the 

Wayzata Yacht Club by Ross Bishop in memory 

of his brother Andy Yender. Andy died crewing on 

Ross’s Etchels 22 in Lake Michigan at the 

Chicago North American Championship. 

Selection: Traditionally, the Andy Crew Award has been 

given to an outstanding crew member and then that crew 

member would get together a committee of previous 

“Andy” winners to select the recipient for the following 

year.

The Foster Award 

The Foster Award was donated in 2002 by Dale “Dirt Ball” Anderson to 

honor Bert Foster for his 30 years of outstanding Race Management 

contribution to the WYC. The first year Dirt awarded it to 

Bert Foster and in future years it is to be awarded to 

recognize other outstanding race management 

contributors to the WYC. 

Selection: The Foster Award is presented by the 

Chairman of the WYC Race Committee to a person 

who has made a great contribution to the WYC’s Race 

Management. It can be awarded to a person for years 

of service, to a young Race Officer for making great progress toward 

becoming a Principal Race Officer, or to other deserving contributors to 

WYC’s race management. This trophy is not necessarily awarded every 

year but is reserved for recognizing outstanding individuals and their 

contributions to race management.

2009 Sailing Review 

Wayzata Sailing Center 

Record numbers of new sailors attended the camp programs this year. 

The new kinder pram program and adult keelboat programs also did 

well. A new deck and launch ramps were added to the center, and they 

are continuing to develop plans for the building. 

This year the WCSC hosted the Jr. Olympics and Area K Jr 

Championship Qualifiers. Ryan Peet and Sierra Sands qualified for the 

National Jr. Double Handed Championship while Matt Thompson of the 

UofM and Charlie Igoe of St. Thomas qualified for the College 

Singlehand Nationals. 

Community Development 

WYC has begun a process with our community and the City of Wayzata 

to improve the communication and zoning regulations for our area. While 

not directly sailing related, we hope this process with support the future 

development of our neighborhood and ensure a stable future for our club. 

Richardson Trophy 

For the second year in a row, WYC hosted the Richardson Trophy 

Match Racing Championship. Chris VanPolle won. America’s Cup 

umpires Dave Pelling and Donald Becker assisted in the event. 

Sonar Team Racing 

The Sonar fleet has begun an initiative to bring Team Racing to Lake 

Minnetonka. This year a team of WYC Sonar sailors sailed three boats 

in the Sheboygan Sailing Center Invitational Team Racing Event and 

earned a first place finish. Look for more in the future. 

MS Cup 

The second year of the MS Cup was a big success with 102 boats and 

over $20,000 in fund raising for the MS Society. New this year was a 

party and live auction at the MYC Corn Roast with new MS Cup 

Trophies for each fleet.

Sportsmanship Award 

The Sportsmanship Award was donated to the Wayzata Yacht Club in 

1968 by Paul Geyer. Paul was an active sailor in the club at that time, 

and created the award to recognize another sailor who he felt had “hung 

in there” and competed under circumstances that would have been 

overwhelming for most people.

Bail Bond Award 

The Bail Bond Award was given to the Wayzata Yacht Club in 1966 by an 

anonymous donor to be presented to our first Commodore, Walt 

Brantingham. The award is called the Bail Bond Trophy because the City of 

Wayzata issued a warrant for Walt’s arrest for illegally mooring his yacht at 

the WYC. Fortunately Walt’s boat was moored in front of his house. Walt, 

with the Club’s attorney, sued for false arrest and the City dropped the 

warrant. 

Selection: The Bail Bond Trophy is to be awarded by the Commodore to 

the person who has demonstrated the greatest love, spirit, and care, for the 

Wayzata Yacht Club. This trophy is not necessarily awarded every year and 

is reserved for recognizing extraordinary efforts. The Bail Bond is WYC’s 

highest service honor.

The Boat of the Year Trophy was donated to the 

Wayzata Yacht Club by George and Betty Hansen in 

1975. It is to award both excellence in achieving 

first place finishes and a participation award for 

sailing many races. Originally awarded in a sailoff 

of fleet champions, the award is now a season 

long points race. The B.O.T.Y. is WYC’s highest 

racing honor. 

Selection: Starting in the 1993 season, the first 

place finishes are weighted by the number of 

participants for that fleet in each race, and is 

awarded to the boat that accumulates the 

most points.

When you accept your trophys, you agree to do three things: 

1. Have your trophies engraved. 

2. Clean your trophies before returning 

3. Return your trophies to the clubhouse before the next banquet.

Engraving is FREE for WYC Trophies. 

Individual Fleet or Personal Trophies may include a nominal fee. 

Remove the plate from the trophy and only bring that in, 

preferably after the holidays. 

Please return your traveling trophies to the WYC clubhouse at the end of 

the racing season (two weeks before the next banquet) in a clean and 

polished state. 

Awards Criteria 

Trophy pictures and glassware are awarded to WYC family members in 

accordance with WYC Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions Section 20, 

either by winning or placing in the racing events or participation in 25 total 

races or qualifying for the Championship Series or Sunset Series. 

Trophy glassware prizes are also awarded to family members according 

to Section 20 of the sailing instructions 

WYC family members receiving a trophy picture are listed in the program 

together with places in a series or race that may or may not qualify for 

glassware. Limited results will be announced during the program at the 

presenter’s discretion. 

Boats are listed in the banquet program primarily by their finishing order in 

each fleet’s championship series and secondly by just making it up.
