Biggest thing on our minds
(and our plate) this month
i~ that we're going to have
to change the Pulse name.
See page 23 for an
explanation and a chance-to
benefit from our
misfortune!
But we also want to call
your attention to a couple
of innovations this month~·
The first, MUSICTHEATRE,
on page 8, is an attempt. to
accommodate listings of a
type that don't fit our daily
calendar very well.
The second, FIRST FIVE,
is a direct response to the
request in the following
letter.
YOU
ASKED!
I was just looking at your
new WEB page yesterday
and it looks neat! I like the
little icon showing the
construction "man-at-work"
going up and down with his
shovel. Cute!
I can see that PULSE is
getting more popular, by the
day. When I went to pick
up my free copy of PULSE
in December at the SHAR
store, they were actually
"sold out" .... We sure have
to pick then\ up eaily now ...
I have a sugges•tion for
you make each monthly
assuming it is at the end of
the month for the following
month. For those picking up
issues, they probably pick
there is a good chance they
will be missing concert
was wondering whether you
might consider printing
concert listings for the first
I
. i
I
BY FRANK LOCKWOOD
As a recording engineer/
producer for classical and
acoustic music, I am
constantly investigating halls
and churches to assess their
acoustical characteristics. I
will be continuing to share
some of what r find with you
here in this ongoing series.
When I first heard about the
construction of the Glenn
Gould Studio, back in the
days when I was working for
CBC Saskatchewan, I was
intrigued. What kind of
studio would the CBC be
building in their flagship
installation, and what
technical and acoustic
wonders would it house to
justify its famous name?
When I heard that it was
going to be a concert hall, I
was skeptical. Mter all, wasn't
it Glenn Gould who
pronounced the death of the
concert hall in 1964? Also, as
I well knew from my
experience recording concerts
for broadcast, doesn't the
presence of a live audience
. compromise the availability
and flexibility of the
microphone placement, as
well as contributing a noise
factor that severely
compromises the quality of
any concert recording?
I had these questions on
my mind when I spoke to
Tom Shipton, the manager of
the Gould studio, and
someone who, some twenty
years ago, had the
opportunity to work with
Glenn Gould as a music
When I asked about the
conceptual dissonance of
naming a concert hall in
Gould's honour, Tom pointed
out the liberal use of Gould's
When I heard that it
was going to be a
concert hall, I was
skeptical. After all,
wasn't it Glenn Gould
who pronounce,d the
death of the concert
hall in 1964?
favourite colour- Battleship
Grey - throughout the hall.
He also suggested that Gould
would have conceded the
necessity of a large space for
the acoustical considerations
of recording classical music,
and would have been amused
by the fact that that each seat
is so designed that, when
empty, it presents the same
amount of acoustic
absorption as if a human
body were present - in
essence, a roomful of people -
with nobody there.
Given the great pianist's
fear of disease, and disdain of
public exposure, this would
have to be an optimal
arrangement.
First and foremost, it is a
recording studio, and one
that is designed primarily for
making recordings of
Classical Music. The control
room ts on the stage
at one st
members, when present, have
no doubt that a recording is
taking place. Back when the
huge CBC facility on Front
Street was in the planning
stages, the design team was
originally requested to
provide two concert halls,
one seating 1000 people and
the other seating 500. As
time progressed, and the
budget shrank, a compromise
was reached for a single 340
seat auditorium, with superb
acoustics, absolute isolation
from the noise of the
building as well as the
surrounding downtown area,
and a state-of-the-art
recording installation.
Since it was built, the
studio has had some very
minor clranges in its design,
namely the carpet running up
the aisles to reduce the overall
reverberance somewhat, and
has seen some modification
in the range of music
presented and recorded. In
addition to the many classical
recordings made for
broadcast, and for private
users, the hall has played host
to presentations of comedy,
spoken word and jazz. The
nature of the acoustic
restricts the range of
performances that can take
place here -anything with a
big P.A. and I or a loud drum
kit is not suitable - and that
is a condition that Tom
Shipton sees as entirely
satisfactory. "We purposely
restricted the range of options
A warm Pulse welcome to our newest
member -- Musica Viva.
While Pulse concert listings are free
to all presenters, members or not,
Pulse members occupy a special place
in our scheme of things.
For example, members are invited,
upon joining, and every summer
thereafter, to submit for publication a
short PROFILE of themselves and their
plans. Additionally, members enjoy
significant discounts on display
advertising throughout the season. And
now, the introduction of our web page
(January 1 1997) brings with it an
additional range of member benefits.
Artistic Director: Vicki Slechta
The 1996-97 season marks the 16th
anniversary of Musica Viva & Friends.
The core ensemble of flutist Vicki
Slechta, cellist Grigory Goldberg and
pianist Cecilia lgnatieff presented their
first recital at the Royal Conservatory
Concert Hall in December 1980. For
several years they performed as a trio
and commissioned two works for this
combination. The ensemble has grown
to include oboist Senia Trubashnik and
mezzo soprano Michele Gaudreau.
With these "friends" and producer Srul
Irving Glick they have released their
first CD, Entre Nous in November
1995. Clyde Gilmour referred to the
ensemble on CBC Radio as "one of
Canada's most accomplished and
versatile chamber ensembles" and Bob
Kerr introduced the disc as "absolutely
charming ... just plain beautiful 20th
century music." Musica Viva will give
its last Toronto performance of the
season at the Glenn Gould Studio on
* Guess what. We blew it. Inadvertently, but
nevertheless. Unintentionally, but comprehensively!
. I
Pulse, our lovely name, belongs to someone else. It's a
registered trademark of the u.s. parent company of Tower
Records at Queen and Yonge.
We didn't know when 'we started, but we do know now,
so, sadly we will have to let go. The owner of the
name has generously given us three months to make
the switch to something else.
SO WE'VE DECIDED TO MAKE
SOME FUN OUT OF OUR MISFORTUNE.
Here's the idea.
You write to us NO LATER THAN MARCH 15 with suggestions
for new names (or acceptable variations on the old one).
Writers of _the five most entertaining and/or
