2008-2009 BAKER DRIVETRAIN BLACK BOOK SUPPLEMENT
American truckers have their own language and their own world and are the transportation backbone of the greatest
country on earth. They transport products from coast to coast to make our consumer-based society a reality. They are also
colorful people as shown by these examples of trucker language:
Lot lizard; prostitute that frequents truck stops
Latrine lips; one who swears a lot on the CB radio
Trucker bombs; when a trucker releases enough ass methane to ignite the cab of the truck if he’s smoking
Quite often truckers will put a motto or message across the back of their cab. “Jesus Saves” is a popular one. I’ve also
seen “Git-R-Dun” and “Lady Trucker”. Early this year I was driving down I-75 and saw one that really caught my eye; it said
“Born to Fuck” in big bold letters. Wow. I’ve been called a sociopath and I do have a pathological aversion to conformity
but this one really baked my noodle. At fi rst, I wanted to sell all my material possessions, become one of his disciples, and
spend the rest of my days spreading the word at truck stops across America. Then weeks later I realized the crystalline
purity of his message. He was speaking the unmitigated truth. We are all born to fuck and that is how the human race is
propagated; that fact cannot be denied. We are born, we fornicate, and we die; that’s the program folks. Playing ‘hide the
weenie’ is a time honored drinking sport and will never go out of style. Perhaps he could have picked some PC words
to convey his message to the world but I’m a big fan of the constitutional fi rst amendment so put that in your pipe and
smoke it. Get out the nitrous and some heavy duty balloons and I’ll introduce to a new concept called Born-to-Fuck truth in
marketing……….
Kia makes a minivan called the Sedona. The Korean car company named their vehicle after the scenic area in Arizona.
I’ve been to that area of our country and the beauty is breathtaking; it is a national treasure but the last thing on my mind
during my visit was some shitty foreign car. So, why didn’t they name it the Kia ‘Kim Chee’ (means rotten cabbage in
Korean) or Kia ‘Unemployed American’ or some name that truly represented what it is? They did this because the word
Sedona is familiar to most Americans. As such, it’s convenient to ignore the fact that a transfer of American wealth to
Korea is automatic with the purchase of each vehicle.
I was in Sears buying a set of tools for our 20 year old son who recently got his own apartment. What better legacy for a
young man than a box of good old American tools that will last a lifetime. Sears now carries a line of tools called “Evolv”
right along side their traditional Craftsmen wrenches. Dingle berries on my ass! Yep, you guessed it; lower cost communist
Chinese shit tools in Sears. In keeping with the new Born-to-Fuck philosophy they should have named their fancy new
line of shit tools ‘Chinese Military Fund’ instead of Evolv. Because right now, while the world is arguing about Iraq and
Afghanistan, the Chinese are well on their way to
building the biggest military machine in the history of the
world.
It’s just like meeting a new chick and bringing her back
to your place for a little game of ‘hide the weenie’. You
whip off your britches, she snatches off her skirt and
you discover the he-she has a bigger crank than you
do. Know what you got before you bring it home. A lot
of products for your American motorcycle are marketed
under traditional American brands or carry American
sounding names and are anything but. Know what you
are buying before you bring it home and put it on your
So you bought your girlfriend a new pair of fun bags, would you
also buy her a bunch of thick sweaters to cover them up from
the world? Hell no. You got some arm candy and you’re gonna
show that shit off! Cluttering up your fancy new rear wheel
that you just spent thousands on with a rotor, caliper, and
caliper bracket is the same deal. We designed our Drive Brake
transmission as a complete system to address some concerns
we had with bolt on systems. Some bolt on systems had small
diameter rotors with partial brake pad engagement; the one
we evaluated wouldn’t even allow us to lock up and skid the
rear wheel. So we designed our system with an 8” rotor and
full pad engagement. With a prototype we were able to lock
up the rear wheel and throw it sideways on old #32 shown
below. Aesthetically, it is super clean with the caliper located
in between the belt rungs and a minimalistic Function Formed
hydraulic actuator spider.
TRANSMISSION SHOWN
The design directives for the
TorqueBox were clearly established
in the early stages of development. This
fl agship gearbox had to have a 250 ft-lb torque
capacity gearset but externally look like 400 ft-lb standing
still. Development costs and resultant retail price were deemed
irrelevant. By choosing the venerable 6-71 blower for architectural
inspiration, we inadvertently gave rise to what is now trademarked as
Function Formed design.
Enter the new PowerBox; Function Formed looks without the need to pawn your guns or your wife’s jewelry.
Design inspiration from the TorqueBox coupled with a diamond ground 8620 steel 6-speed overdrive gearset
gives the PowerBox an input torque capacity of 165 ft-lb, with a 400 ft-lb curb appeal; some may argue more.
More because the tidy compact design of the PowerBox makes the function Formed design elements pop out
more. 34Ds will always be noticed more on a petite chick than a larger chick; same concept.
BD-5QTR-EVO, CAST SILVER OIL PAN
We bought a new 2007 FL to use for 7-speed transmission development
work. The fi rst thing we noticed was how hot the damn thing ran. In traffi c,
we could see those little heat wave squiggle lines (maybe a fl ashback)
coming off the motor. The 4-qt capacity, unchanged since 1993 (when the
80” motor made 49 hp), seemed inadequate.
So we designed a new pan in Solidworks with a 5 qt capacity by going
wider not deeper, hence the +1 Oil Pan. Taking a closer look at the stock
pan we discovered it has the oil pickup and return in the front of the pan
within 2” of each other. So we put the pickup in the rear of our +1 Oil Pan
and the return in the front for better oil circulation.
BD-5QTB, CAST BLACK OIL PAN
After getting the speed wobbles on a high speed sweeper, Robby from
Alloy Art sold us on the idea of a stabilizer link. It really worked, no more
speed wobbles! So we incorporated two bosses on the bottom to directly
bolt the heim joint of both types of stabilizers to the oil pan, see next page
for details.
FEATURES:
- Cast oil pans are 1-piece design and made with A356-T6 aluminum
- Billet oil pans are 2-piece design and made with 6061-T6 aluminum
- Feed and return on the stock pan are within 2” of each other.
BAKER pans have feed in the back and return in front
- Reduces engine oil temperature by 10-30º. The longer and hotter the
ride, the bigger the temperature differential as compared to stock
- Multiple integral baffl es eliminate the stock plastic spring loaded baffl e
- Integral bosses for Alloy Art TXR and True Track stabilizers structurally
located on the bottom
- True bolt on part, no modifi cations required
- PNs below include plugs, fasteners, and gasket
- We highly recommend the +1 Oil Pan for S&S T124 applications. It
makes a lot of power and a lot of heat. The oil feed and return on the
right back of the motor is unique. The following adapter kit is
designed specifi cally (and required) for the +1 Oil Pan and the T124 motor
The BAKER +1 Oil Pans have integrally casted-in mounting bosses for both the True Track and Alloy Art stabilizing systems. The bosses
eliminate the need to use the intermediate adapter bracket (normally provided with both type stabilizer systems) and permit direct coupling
to the bottom of the oil pan. The two types of systems address the same problem of speed wobbles with two different approaches. From our
assessment, the Alloy Art system controls fore-aft and side-to-side movement through a urethane bushing and seems to be suited towards more
aggressive riders with a moderate increase in vibration. The True Track system has no rubber bushings and restricts side-to-side movement but
allows fore-aft movement which seems to be suited more towards all-around riding with a nominal increase in vibration. For more information as
FOUR ISSUES WITH THE CRUISE DRIVE FACTORY 6-SPEED
WERE THE IMPETUS FOR DEVELOPING THE DD7:
- 1st gear ratio is too tall (numerically too small). The DD7 1st gear is shorter
(numerically larger) for easier launches off the line.
- Shift clunk due to heavy mainshaft. The Factory 6-speed
incorporates 1st through 4th gears as an integral part of the
mainshaft and weighs 5.58 lb. The DD7 incorporates 1st gear
only and weighs 2.98 lb. This 2.6 lb weight difference at 3000
rpm translates into a huge difference in inertia, which is what
makes the factory 6-speed go CLUNK every time a shift is
made.
- Shift Smoothness. We incorporated a roller detent shift system in our original
6-speed back in 1998. The Factory 6-speed utilizes a similar system. The DD7 sets
a new standard in shift quality by borrowing the linear roller ball detent technology
from our TorqueBox transmission. This premium detent system is part of the top
cover assembly.
- Gear noise. The Factory 6-speed makes some noise in 1st and a lot of noise in 5th;
both gear pairs are straight cut with a power honed fi nish. So we designed the DD7
with a 5º helical 1st gear pair, straight cut 2nd and 3rd for strength, and 18º helicals
for 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th for noise control; all are fi nished after heat treatment with a
Bolt on kicker kits are nothing new. Over the years many have come
and gone for one common reason: they all relied on a ratchet hub or
shaft extension that screwed on to the end of the mainshaft in place
of the ¾-16 nyloc jam nut. They all eventually broke for the same
reason. The end of the shaft snapped off!
FRANKENTRANNY
BUILDER’S KITS
FOR 1990-2006 BIG TWIN
We sprinkled a little magic dust, from our meth trailer out back, on our Softail
FrankenTranny transmission assembly to morph it into a builder’s kit that fits all
5-speed applications from 1990-up. It effectively converts a factory 5-speed into
a 6-speed overdrive with provisions for a 1936-based 4-speed kicker. Why did
we do this? Because a timeless kicker on a Big Twin looks really fuckin cool!
And kick starting your bike in a crowd of button pushers is boner material.
PN DESCRIPTION FITMENT
FT106P FrankenTranny builder’s kit 2001-05 Dyna, 2001-06 FL, 2000-06 Softail
FEATURES:
- Gearset is assembled and ready to install
- Existing transmission case does not need to be removed from the chassis
- Includes maindrive gear bearing, snap ring, sprocket spacer, seal, fasteners,
fork rod (short) and gaskets
- 500 RPM reduction in cruising RPM on highway with .86 6th gear ratio
- Trap door has dowels for positive kicker cover locating w/ BAKER kicker covers
- Kicker cover & related parts sold separately
NOTES:
- TwinCam models require ignition retrofi t to facilitate kick starting, see page 14
- FL models from 1993-up require a BAKER FF oil spout.
- Some exhaust systems may not be compatible with the FrankenTranny due to
the extended transmission length and the required kick arm envelope.
FRANKENTRANNY BUILDER’S KIT PN FT106SL
To install the FrankenTranny builder’s Kit , the type of clutch actuator needs
to be selected. The clutch actuator is an integral part of the kicker cover. We
offer hydraulic, mechanical, or cable type. The hydraulic and mechanical kicker
covers are featured on page 10. The cable type, PN 478-56CP is the simplest
to install and accepts all O.E. type clutch cables from 1990-2006 and includes
the ball-ramp actuation components. Hydraulic type is the cleanest route but
requires the purchase of any 11/16” bore master cylinder or Harley equivalent.
Mechanical type is the most historically accurate but requires a Shovelhead
clutch cable, BAKER 14º arm (PN182-6N4A), and some fab work to cobble a
clutch cable perch; not compatible with Softail (oil tank).
NEW KICK PEDAL AND KICK ARMS
We tooled our own kick pedal and kick arm to address some problems we were having with the ones we purchased for our 6-into-4 transmissions. The
brass pedals we were using had a ½” diameter spindle made out of some shit metal. A few were returned because the spindle was breaking. So we
tooled our own bronze pedal and made the spindle diameter 5/8”. And we upgraded from shit steel to preheat treated 4140. The 4-speed kick arm we
were purchasing had an elbow in it for exhaust pipe clearance. Our 6-into-4 has 2 more gears than a 4-speed and it sticks out 1.6” more, such that an
elbow is not required. So we tooled a straight kick arm and made the cross section twice as thick. The following Part numbers fi t 4-speed, F5K, F6K,
Frankentranny, and 6-into-4:
STOCK SPINDLE IS 1/2” DIAMETER
- BAKER SPINDLE IS 5/8” DIAMETER, WHICH IS 56% LARGER THAN STOCK
- BAKER SPINDLE HAS 3/8” SPINDLE BOLT VS. 5/16” FOR STOCK
IGNITION RETROFIT ALTERNATIVES
Starting in 1999 with the fi rst Twin Cam engines, Harley started using a fl ywheel-based trigger for the ignition. This style ignition requires the
fl ywheels (aka crankshaft) to turn over 3 or 4 times for it to ‘fi nd itself’ before it starts sparking. 3 or 4 rotations of the fl ywheel may not sound like
much while you’re taking a shit right now and reading this catalog, but it’s almost humanly impossible. Cam-based ignitions spark at less than
one fl ywheel rotation and it lights off the fi rst time it hits TDC.
To install one of our kickers on a Twin Cam bike and have it be a functional, you must convert the ignition to a cam-based unit like those shown
below. This applies to the F5K, F6K, and Frankentranny conversions. The ignition solutions below may be purchased through BAKER at a discount
with purchase of a F5K, F6K, or Frankentranny.
GATES ENGINEERING
Gates offers a retrofi t kit that allows the use of any of the cam based ignitions from the Evo era. A lot
of Evo ignitions were completely programmable which gives the end user complete control of their
ignition curve. If you want an electronic ignition that allows you to use your favorite Evo ignition and
MORRIS MAGNETO
If you are concerned about the advent of WW3 ruining your riding season, then you need to
purchase a magneto ignition for your bike. All microchip controlled ignitions and microchip controlled
machinery will be rendered inoperative after the Soviets and Chinese drop their EMP (electro
magnetic pulse) bombs in our atmosphere. The Morris Magneto has no microchips and delivers a
fl at 30 degree advance curve under all RPMs. It has a neat impulse coupling mechanism that winds
up when you shut off the motor. Upon restart, the impulse coupling makes kick starting easier by
retarding the ignition. Maintenance is bone simple if you need it down the road before you meet up
Twin Cams that includes a timing tool and electronic ignition module. The ignition module gives a
fl at 5º advance and feeds in an additional 30º as RPM increases, via fl yweights, to give a total of
35º advance. If you want a complete A-Z electronic ignition kit that bolts on with minimal hassle, this
2008-2009 BAKER DRIVETRAIN BLACK BOOK SUPPLEMENT
Mr. Potato Head® was conceived in R&D a few years back to study the confi gurational possibilities of putting universal bosses on a featureless tranny case.
Just like the Mr. Potato Head® toy, you can end up with a genetic hermaphrodite with a little off-the-menu creativity. The universal tranny case accepts an
A-fl ange, B-fl ange or Evo fl ange. It also accepts all kinds of tail stocks. This exercise yielded the easiest solution to offsetting a tranny case side-to-side or
up-and-down in short production runs.
The RT250 vision began at Rolling Thunder when they divulged plans to develop a FL-type Bagger frame that was setup for a 250 tire and Softail length primary
in a balanced RSD chassis. They approached us about doing a special tranny that was specifi c to this frame. Mr. Potato Head® ®
technology fi nally found
its fi rst home and we named it the RT250 project.
The RT250 is an advanced version of the venerable 1993-2008 FL with the following features:
FEATURES:
- Utilizes stock Softail primaries and BAKER FFP
- Tranny is offset ½” to the left to tuck the drive belt/chain inside the frame rail
- No ½” motor sprocket extension required; tranny is slammed against the inner primary
- Tranny mainshaft is ½” shorter than stock
- Oil bag is separate and below the tranny case for superior cooling
- Frame has +2” in backbone for additional primary length
- Stock Harley® FL frames converted by Rolling Thunder and original VIN retained for no
registration hassle
- Frames accept stock seat, bags, tank, and front end
N1 DRUMS
OD6R N1 DRUM
BAKER PN:
124-OD6RN1-A
Five years ago we developed the N1 drum for drag racers and street racers
who used our 6-speed overdrive. The N1 shift pattern (Neutral-1-2-3-4-5-6) was
designed to prevent false neutrals during aggressive 1-2 upshifts by positioning
neutral under 1st. The jockey shift/foot clutch crowd soon discovered the benefi ts
of the N1 pattern. The big lever ratio of a jockey shift lever desensitizes the feel
of the detents in the transmission such that fi nding neutral is a crap shoot with
bad odds. With neutral on bottom (or all the way forward), the jockey shifter can
mindlessly tap all the way down to neutral thus allowing him to put both feet on
the ground as he rolls up to the stop light.
Today, a whole new crowd is realizing the benefi ts of the N1 pattern. Pingel’s
electric shifter is slicker-than-snot and appeals to racers as well as those with
restricted movement in their left foot and left hand. Utilizing an N1 drum in
conjunction with Pingel’s electric shifter makes fi nding neutral (with the solenoid)
seamless and yields a solenoid actuated shift system that almost makes foot
shifting obsolete.
FEATURES/NOTES:
- N1 shift system option available at no additional cost with purchase of a complete transmission
or builder’s kit
- 5-speed N1 shift systems fi t H-D® 5-speeds and BAKER 5-speeds
- For aggressive shifting we also recommend the use of our anti-overshift ratchet pawl, PN
555-56A for 5-speeds through 1999 and 555-56L for 5-speeds 2000-up. For example, this pawl
mechanically prevents an unintended 1-3 up shift during an intended 1-2 upshift
“When I increased my horsepower in my 2005 Fl, I knew I needed
a better transmission. I couldn’t afford the stock one locking up
and doing damage to my motor. I called Baker and found out
they had a transmission with neutral on the bottom. This would be
a perfect fi t with my electric shifter as I would never need to use
my foot. This Baker trans is not only great for my everyday riding
but also helped me go 11:87 at the track without fear of breaking
gears.”
2008-2009 BAKER DRIVETRAIN BLACK BOOK SUPPLEMENT
THERE IS MORE TO A TRANSMISSION
THAN JUST METAL
As a company tenaciously focused on any improvement to the American Big Twin
drivetrain, BAKER Drivetrain recognizes the fl uid in the transmission is key in
the performance and life of a transmission. It is a mechanical part of it as much
as the gears, case, bearings, etc…so it must be of quality. The Spectro Platinum
Heavy Duty 6-Speed Transmission Lubricant meets our BAKER Drivetrain quality
standards for recommended transmission oil. Our standard for recommending oil
is that it must have optimized properties tailored only for components in a V-Twin
motorcycle transmission and it must exceed all others
in excellence – like our own products do. Cheaper oils
cannot provide all these qualities.
Spectro’s 6-Speed formula base is synthetic group 4 base stock which is the highest rating for a synthetic lubricant. It is pure
with absolutely no petroleum product blended into it. Unlike most others, the oil carriers for the anti-wear and friction modifi ers
are 100% synthetic making this oil truly 100% synthetic which means this fl uid cannot be worn out or broken down - it can
only be contaminated. For example, in a hermetically sealed application it would last for 20 years, but transmissions are far
from sterile because the vent breathes air as the transmission heat cycles and the seals are not perfect. For this reason, we
advise changing your oil every 5000 miles or once yearly, whichever comes fi rst. It’s worth the investment protecting your
premium transmission.
All anti-wear ingredients are additized to a factory fi ll specifi cation. Additives include zinc as an anti-wear additive,
phosphorous as an anti-wear and friction modifi er, and sulfur as an anti-wear and friction modifi er. Note; sulfur cannot be used
as an additive in multi-use oils that are used in the engine sump because sulfur gets contaminated by the combustion process
and eventually changes into sulfuric acid. Spectro’s special formula also protects against long term seal leaks by maintaining
seal elasticity, as validated by Buna-N testing.
Spectro has maintained the highest quality motorcycle oils since 1966. Spectro’s reputation may be new in the American V-
Twin motorcycle industry for now, but we have discovered Spectro’s recent entry into this market as an absolute winner. They
used their resources, experience, and talent for a formula specifi cally tailored for our bikes. As drivetrain innovators we are
proud to be the ones to discover, introduce, and endorse this lube. We are equally proud to announce that Spectro 75W140 is
approved by BAKER Drivetrain for use in all BAKER transmission products and we refl ect that by including a free bottle in our
DD6 transmissions for your best performance and convenience.
learning and communicating - so we will be launching
the BAKER Blog. It will be a fantastic way to keep up on
all the happenings here at BAKER and will be updated by
the same folks you see at the shows, and talk to on the
BAKER ONLINE STORE:
BAKER product offerings 10 years ago were pretty damn
simple. We offered 8 different part numbers and that was
it. Our printed catalog easily captured and conveyed
our product line. American motorcycle enthusiasts got
their information by calling our toll free number, reading
magazines, and attending bar stool seminars. Back then,
nobody in our world relied on, or trusted, the internet to
obtain nitty-gritty details on neat new stuff for their scoot.
But today, thanks to pornography, bikers are as websavvy
as the rest of the population. And it’s a good thing
because BAKER product offerings these days number in the
thousands and many confi gurational options are available
for any one application. By June 2009 we will launch the
new BAKER E-Commerce site to simplify the task of product
selection for our dealers (password required) and the public.
Look for the E-Commerce button prominently displayed on
our home page. It will guide you interactively, through the
maize of options, so you end up with the right confi guration
for your application.
