Hannah submits her survey, she receives five male students’ name. Marcus Cooley calls
her and say that she is on the list, as well. They decide to meet up at Rosie’s Diner, but
Hannah gets stood up. Marcus appears later that day and apologizes. They sit together
and suddenly he touches Hannah’s leg. She looks around and sees that no one is there to
help her out. She pushes Marcus off the chair and starts thinking about killing herself.

Hannah starts Cassette 4 by mentioning Peer Communications, which is one of her
classes in school. In this class, students have their own paper bags that others can put
notes when they cannot say things directly. Hannah realizes that she is not getting any
notes from her classmates. She gets a feeling that someone is stealing her notes and
finds out that it has been Zach Dempsey all along. He was with Marcus when Hannah
pushed Marcus off the table. Zach offered assistance but got ignored by Hannah. Then
he chooses the most childish way to get back at Hannah. He steals her compliment notes
when Hannah has been in severe conditions. Even when Hannah witnesses Zach
stealing her notes, he does not apologize and walks away. Then she cries why he stole
her letters. The second part of the tape is about Ryan Shaver, the editor of a school news
paper. Hannah and Ryan met together in poetry meeting held in local library. They
become quite close and share their poetry notes. Finally, it seems like Hannah has found
someone who can share similar thoughts and elaborate on fascinating topics. However,
Ryan steals her notebook, print her poetry, and let other people to ridicule her poem.
Hannah feels even more betrayed after this incident because she thinks at least her
inner thoughts are supposed to be protected.
