cassette tapes also represents truth.
Analysis
Hannah, being covered in rumors, doesn’t really try to prove that the rumors are wrong
because she says, “... And everyone knows you can’t disprove a rumor”(Asher 30). She
basically had no opportunity to do so because nobody listened to her, and only treated her
as if she was how the rumor described she was like. So, before she died, nobody really
cared about what she said and weren’t interested in who she really was, deceived by all
the stories that were told about her. However, after her death, through the cassette tapes
the truth of the reason to her death was told and people actually listened because they
were afraid.

Although this may seem like an inappropriate symbol, it plays such a big part in the book,
that it cannot be ignored. Hannah was recognized for her butt and nothing more in the
beginning, which really upset her and started the whole rumors around school. Hannah,
was nominated to have the best butt in her Freshman class by the people in her class on a
small list that was created as a joke. However, Hannah takes it seriously and says,
“Maybe some people think you were right in choosing me. I don’t think so. But let me
put it this way, I don’t think my ass-as you call it-was the deciding factor”(Asher 41).
