Example 2
Hannah was close to Jessica Davis, a cheerleader, in the beginning of the book, but later
on in the book, Jessica betrays Hannah because of Alex. Jessica and Hannah was actually
introduced by a teacher named Ms. Antilly. Jessica and Hannah got very close and
Hannah mentions how she “... walked past the street where she lived in order to keep
talking with me”(Asher 58). They were interested in each other and had a bond of
friendship. “At that moment I would have paid dearly for Jessica’s friendship”(61). Then,
their friend ship started to break down after Alex, who was Jessica’s ex-boyfriend chose
over Jessica for being the hot girl. “‘Hannah’ she said, ‘I don’t care that he picked you
over me’”(65). The scene turned out into violence because Jessica hit Hannah in the face:
“She rose up beside her chair-glared down at me-and swung”(Asher 67). Then, as the
story progressed to a point where they were were basically enemies, Jessica matches
Hannah up with Marcus, using the Valentines survey game. This event is significant
because Hannah almost gets raped by Marcus at the back of the Rosie’s Diner.
Analysis 2
Hannah and Jessica becomes very friendly in the beginning while Jessica and Alex are
going out. However, when Jessica breaks up with Alex, he chooses Hannah as the hottest
girl in his class for revenge. This causes Hannah and Jessica to become enemies and
eventually Jessica betrays Hannah by matching her up with Marcus. Jessica basically
wanted Hannah to get raped by Marcus and therefore, it represents betrayal because they
were both close friends and because of the things that other people did, without Hannah
even wanting to happen, Jessica betrays Hannah’s friendship and tries to seek revenge.
