Rising Action: Clay Jensen receives a shoebox in front of his door and finds seven cassette tapes recorded by Hannah, who has recently committed suicide. As Clay listens to Hannah narrating about her pain and sadness, the conflicts start to arise. Climax: Hannah and Clay get a chance to talk to each other at the party. They kiss each other, but Hannah thinks about her past memories with boys and pushes Clay away. Clay regrets about that night because he had a chance to be a person who Hannah can rely on and Hannah becomes devastated. Eventually, this leads her to her suicide. Falling Action: Hannah gives herself one last chance and talks to Mr. Porter about committing a suicide. She wants to hear a solution in her life, but Mr. Porter tells her to move on. Hannah finds this pointless and decides to commit suicide by taking pills. Foreshadowing: At the end of the novel, Clay calls Skye’s name because she reminds him of Hannah. Last time he was with Hannah, he lost his chance with Hannah and let her commit suicide. This makes the readers to foreshadow future relationship with Clay and Skye. Clay is likely to make up to Skye the things he has not been able to do to Hannah.
