Saint Dominic College Preparatory High School

Acceptance to
Saint Dominic
College Preparatory High School is more than just a
recognition of all that you have already achieved... it is
your first step to an education that embraces success and
values and a place where you will find your direction.

Saint Dominic
High School
Mission Statement
The mission of Saint Dominic High School is to
educate young people in a community dedicated to
Gospel values and Catholic teachings. Ministering
to students of diverse abilities, Saint Dominic
High School strives to achieve wholeness through
personal holiness, academic excellence, and social
responsibility. The pride of this community is its
celebration of a student’s growth and individuality.
Adopted April 5, 1994

Over 80 Years of
Academic Excellence
Saint Dominic High School continues to offer a values-centered, Catholic education to young
women and men on Long Island; in fact, Saint Dominic is honored to hold the distinction of being
the oldest co-educational Catholic high school in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Saint Dominic
is, and always has been, a parish high school and parishioners proudly refer to their high school
as “The Parish Gem.” Yet from its earliest days it has also attracted students from communities
outside the local area, fulfilling the hope and intent of the school’s founder, Monsignor Charles
J. Canivan, to make Saint Dominic Parish an educational center that included a high school of
outstanding merit. At the time of its founding, Saint Dominic was one of only a few schools
accessible to young women and men seeking a Catholic secondary education. Today, even with
many more schools in the region for students to choose, Saint Dominic continues to draw from a
broad geographic area, encompassing more than 64 communities and 58 public school districts
in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
The key to Saint Dominic’s perennial attractiveness and success is simply this: Saint Dominic strives to
respond to each student in a personal and caring manner, treating her or him as an individual with unique
needs, aspirations, and potential. Saint Dominic begins by helping the students at their level and then
seeks to bring them to a higher, better place in their lives – intellectually, socially, morally, and spiritually.

A Bright Future
99%
Ninety-nine percent of
Saint Dominic graduates
go on to college;
others go on to careers in both business and the
military. In the past five years, Saint Dominic
seniors have been accepted at many prestigious
colleges and universities, and many have
received scholarships and financial assistance.

The Saint Dominic
Family
Students
Saint Dominic attracts and accepts students from many diverse backgrounds and traditions.
Although a majority of the students are Roman Catholic, other faiths are welcome. All students
participate in the complete offerings of the school and are encouraged to share their experiences
as well as demonstrate a willingness to grow academically, socially, and spiritually.
Faculty
An outstanding faculty of lay and religious women and men, who provide direction and
inspiration to our students, serves Saint Dominic High School. The faculty’s commitment to
learning, teaching, and fostering the growth of each student is among the primary reasons that
Saint Dominic graduates succeed in college, in the working world, and in family and community
life.
Parents
Parents’ most critical role is to be supportive of their children, offering encouragement with high
expectations. Historically, parents have also involved themselves in school life by sponsoring
Parents’ Club meetings and participating actively in a number of school activities, including
Open House and Golf Outings, and the Canivan Gala and Auction.
Alumni
Alumni know firsthand what Saint Dominic offers and how it has affected their lives. An
expanding event and reunion program heralds the return of alumni to the Saint Dominic campus
and to an active personal and financial involvement in the school.

Campus Life
The Saint Dominic
Experience...
Values
The practice of the gospel values in the Roman Catholic tradition is a hallmark of a Saint Dominic education.
The values-centered atmosphere at Saint Dominic permeates all activities of the school. Self-discipline, respect for
self and others, reflection, and prayer are integrated throughout daily school life. Saint Dominic offers a caring
environment, with experiences in daily prayer, liturgical worship, retreats, and personal counseling available
throughout the year.
Challenge
One of the principal goals of a Saint Dominic education is to nurture in each student a positive sense of personal
identity and self-esteem. This is achieved by offering each student a balanced educational experience characterized
by opportunity, challenge, and success.
Respect
Students at Saint Dominic are encouraged to recognize their own unique characteristics and to share their personal
talents with other students. This process of discovery and sharing permits students to claim their right to respect
while learning about and respecting others.
Responsibility
At Saint Dominic, students are expected to develop an understanding of their role in society. As part of the
comprehensive educational experience, students are required to take an active role in their community through a
comprehensive service program.
ACTIVITIES AT SAINT DOMINIC HIGH SCHOOL
Saint Dominic High School provides a range of extracurricular programs and activities that encompass the areas of
performance, service, and sports. Even more significant than the number of activities or the programs related to them are the
opportunities available to each student.
Because of our comparatively small size, a student does not have to be an expert to become a member of an activity or team.
There is a real opportunity to discover previously unknown talents and develop others.
The Student Athlete
At Saint Dominic
Saint Dominic offers a diverse athletic program that permits students to participate at a level
consistent with their interest and ability. All students are involved in the school’s physical
education program; interscholastic teams are available on an optional basis. The school has one
of the premier indoor athletic facilities among Long Island high schools. The Monsignor James
E. Collins Sports Center, which can seat 1,200, contains three-regulation basketball courts, locker
rooms, and training facilities. In recent years, Saint Dominic has played host to both CHSAA
and CHSGAA league and state basketball tournament games. Saint Dominic is a member of
the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic High School Athletic Association (NSCHSAA). One of the newest
additions to the Saint Dominic buildings and grounds is the Saint Dominic Playing Fields-Charles
B. Wang Campus, which comprises two baseball fields, two soccer/ lacrosse fields, two softball
fields, and four tennis courts on 32 acres of land. This campus is only 2.4 miles from our main
campus, and shuttle bus service is provided. The new campus brings enormous advantages to
