JLB MISSION
The Junior League of Baltimore,
Inc. is an organization
of women committed to
promoting voluntarism,
developing the potential
of women, and improving
communities through the
effective action and
leadership of trained volunteers.
Its purpose is exclusively
educational and charitable.
Spring is in the air! The coming weeks and
months are an exciting time for the Junior
League of Baltimore as we look at all we
have accomplished and what we have to look
forward to in the upcoming League year.
As I reflect on this year, I realize how quickly time
has flown by. It seems like just yesterday that we
were moving into our new building and celebrating
our permanent home in Govans. No longer do we
have to rent space to hold our membership meetings,
fundraisers and community events. We are now
living and serving in our community and I look
forward to seeing all of our hard work take shape
as we continue to move our organization forward.
Also during this year, I have had the pleasure of
getting to know so many of you, our members,
beyond just your placement in the League. You have
touched me with your dedication, commitment and
drive for the League and for one another. A great
example of your dedication, commitment and drive
can be seen in our many accomplishments in the
second half of our League year, highlighted below:
Promoting Voluntarism…
• Successfully recruited 9 New Members
into our spring class and voted 49 New
Members into active status from the fall class.
• Raised unrestricted funds for the League
through over 850 volunteer hours spent
promoting our sales at the Wise Penny, Boutique
Warehouse Sale and Boutique of the Month.
“Never doubt that a small group of
committed people can change the world.
Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead
Branded the League and several of
our events through amazing media
exposure, including TV appearances
on Fox, ABC and WJZ, as well as
a live radio segment on 98 Rock.
Countless committee meetings and shift
service hours completed by our members.
Developing the Potential of Women…
• Graduated two interns from our Internship
Program and offered continued employment
opportunities and mentoring to both.
• Provided training opportunities to
Board and Membership in nonprofit
governance, including approval of
•
our operating budget, review of our
Operational Policies and Bylaws and
voting on changes affecting next year.
Offered training our members both
internally and externally through
committee work and conference attendance.
Improving the Community…
• Served our community through Done-In-
A-Day projects, our Kids in the Kitchen
initiative, the Larks sharing the joy
of song and our Parental Engagement
program at Govans Elementary.
• Offered our headquarters and
multipurpose training space to several
local community organizations.
• Exceeded our individual, corporate and
foundation funding goals for the year that
support our capacity to serve our mission.
you not
only make
a gift to the JLB, but you
also create a lasting honor
for you and your family,
partner or anything/
anyone else you choose!
Or add a brick with your
an accomplishment,
celebrate a JLB milestone
or other outstanding
achievement, and most
importantly, maintain a
lasting relationship with
the League. If the brick is
someone else, the JLB will
Kids in the Kitchen
We are proud to share that
attendance at Kids in the Kitchen was
the highest to date with over 2,220
attendees at Port Discovery, including
the 195 students and chaperones
brought to the event by the JLB from
several Baltimore City Public Schools
and/or community centers serving
at-risk children, including Govans
Elementary, Barclay Elementary,
Hampden Elementary, KIPP Ujima
Village Academy, Hampden Family
Center, and the Franciscan Center.
This 30% increase in attendance was
directly influenced by our Kids in the
Kitchen event and the WJZ- TV spot
filmed Saturday morning promoting the
event and featuring George Stella, JLB
Director, Shelly Terranova, and Kaiser
Permanente. An exciting addition to
the program this year was an exclusive
Meet and Greet with celebrity chef,
George Stella the evening prior to Kids
in the Kitchen.
We are as always grateful for our
partners and sponsors who made the
day a success including Port Discovery,
Crystal Palace, Coach Tom, Fresh
Market, George Stella, and of course,
our lead sponsor Kaiser Permanente.
AJLI Award
Th e Ju n i o r Le a g u e o f Ba L T i m o r e, i n c.
The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) awarded
the Junior League of Baltimore the Junior League Award
for Fund Development. The award was made at AJLI’s 88th
Annual Conference in Orlando on April 17, 2010. Through
its annual awards program, AJLI celebrates the outstanding
accomplishments and significant contributions that Junior
Leagues make both internally within the 293 individual Leagues
and externally, working to solve some of the toughest and most
urgent problems in their communities.
“Because we are a volunteer organization, fundraising is a critical
element of our success. But the cornerstone of any League’s
mission has to be a strategy that turns dollars into meaningful
community impact,” said AJLI President-Elect and member
of the Junior League of Monmouth County, Delly Beekman.
“Whether the strategy involves capital campaigns or endowments,
thrift shops or cookbooks, galas or holiday markets, the outcome is
the development of civic leaders who create and execute significant
programs that strengthen their communities.”
The Junior League of Baltimore was cited for its successful
capital campaign, which raised $1.2 million for a permanent home
for its Wise Penny Thrift store, which provides 40 percent of its
annual budget. In addition to being the largest capital project
in the Govans section of Baltimore in the last decade, the new
facility also houses office space, meeting rooms, and training
facilities that collectively respond to a previously unmet need
for a safe gathering place within the community, a fact that has
strengthened the League’s position in Baltimore as a source for
talent and support.
In making the campaign successful, the League engaged members
throughout the process—enlisting them to cultivate donors,
write grant applications, and manage construction, among other
activities. Members testified at public hearings at the State Capitol,
advocated for bills at public hearings, and tapped new government
sources. As a result, the campaign has produced a renewed
community focus, new sources of revenue, and full membership
engagement in meaningful work that has qualified members as
true civic leaders.
