ABUSE AND VIOLENCE PROGRAM The program is composed of a team of primary care researchers working in the areas of family violence, child abuse, unwanted sexual encounters, sexual harassment and workplace violence. The overall aim of the program is to improve the health and wellbeing of women, families and communities through addressing problems of abuse and violence. Research includes observational studies on the nature of the abuse and violence problem including its definition, prevalence, natural history and health consequences; developing and testing screening, educational and therapeutic interventions; and the promotion of knowledge transfer and research evidence to inform policy and practice. RESEARCH TEAM Abuse and Violence Program Team (Left to Right) Lorna O'Doherty, William Wong, Susan Webster, Anita Morris, Janita Clewett, Kelsey Hegarty, Hagen Tuschke TEAM LEADER Associate Professor Kelsey Hegarty MB BS PhD DRACOG FRACGP leads the program researching areas of family violence, child abuse, unwanted sexual encounters, sexual harassment and workplace violence. Her research interests include family violence and mental health research in primary care. She has extensive experience teaching doctors and practice nurses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. RESEARCHERS Dr Ruth McNair MB BS PhD DA DRANZCOG FRACGP is a senior lecturer and GP practising in North Fitzroy. Her research interests are in lesbian and bisexual women's health including health status, parenting and health service access. She has developed a guide for GPs from her PhD study on sensitive care for lesbian, bisexual and gay patients. Dr Lorna O'Doherty BA MBS PhD is a research fellow within the Abuse and Violence program and is coordinator of the Women’s Evaluation of Abuse and Violence care in general practice (WEAVE) trial. She is involved in a Cochrane review of screening and various qualitative studies looking at disclosure, identity and resilience in the context of abuse and violence. Lorna is also interested in quality of life research and ethical issues in trials. Dr Heather McGarry MB BS MMed GCertHlthProfEd FRACGP is a lecturer within the Academic Centre and a GP. Her research interest is in experiences of sexual harassment among Australian female GPs (the SHARE project). Associate Professor William Wong MB ChB MPubHlth MD FRCGP FRACGP is an academic GP at the Academic Centre and is part of the Researching Abuse and ViolencE (RAVE) team. He has done considerable work in addressing health equity in marginalised groups such as female sex workers, and child abuse in China. page14

RESEARCH ASSISTANTS Ms Janita Clewett BA is a research assistant on the Women's Evaluation of Abuse and Violence care in general practice (WEAVE) project and the administrative coordinator for the Family Violence: Actioning Interdisciplinary Research (FAIR) committee. Ms Eleanor Tan BBioMedSc MPubHlth is a research assistant on the WEAVE project. Her public health interests include women's health, primary health care and health in developing countries.
