PRIMARY CARE RESEARCH UNIT (PCRU) DIRECTOR, PRIMARY CARE RESEARCH UNIT Professor Jane Gunn MB BS PhD DRANZCOG FRACGP is Professor and Chair of Primary Care Research and the Head of Department. She also leads the Mental Health research program. DIRECTOR, RESEARCH TRAINING Associate Professor Meredith Temple-Smith BSc DipAppChildPsych DipMov&Dance MPubHlth MPHAA DHSc coordinates all aspects of research training in the Academic Centre and has a key role in the PHCRED Research Capacity Building Initiative (RCBI). Her areas of research interests are in the area of sexual health and Hepatitis C. BIOSTATISTICIAN Ms Patty Chondros BSc GDipEpid&Biostat MSc provides statistical advice and support for the Academic Centre's research projects. Patty is currently undertaking her PhD on the design and analysis of matched-pair cluster randomised trials, funded by a NHMRC scholarship. ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF Ms Ruby Biezen BSc MAppSc coordinates the Victorian practicebased Research Network, VicReN, and she is also the Community and GP Linkages coordinator for the CRESCENT project. Mr David Ormiston-Smith BSc develops and maintains databases, tracking systems, and additional software tools to support the data collection requirements and other technical needs of the Primary Care Research Unit. Ms Kitty Novy RN provides general research administrative support, including patient and practice recruitment for clinical trials for the Primary Care Research Unit. She is also the secretariat to the Australian Association for Academic Primary Care (AAAPC). Three overarching themes drive our research programs: Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Our researchers come from a wide variety of clinical and research backgrounds and together we have developed a vibrant research culture and infrastructure to support research of relevance to general practice, primary care and the community. Our major research programs and post-doctoral fellows are funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI), the Australian Research Council (ARC), the Department of Health and Ageing, the beyondblue Victorian Centre of Excellence and other competitive research grants as listed under the research projects sections of this profile. Our research is grounded in general practice and primary care and focuses on the provision of primary, comprehensive, and continuing care. RESEARCH PROGRAMS We have strong research programs in primary care mental health, chronic disease, young people's health, and abuse and violence. These research programs are tackling some of the most challenging problems that face the Australian community such as depression, diabetes, family violence, risk taking behaviour in young people and sexually transmissible infections. We are developing research programs in the use of complementary and alternative therapies, musculoskeletal problems and cancer. Our annual research grant income in 2009 was $3.15 million, with most of this being awarded via Australian national competitive grants. See the publications section for a full list of our published works. Each Wednesday from 1-2pm during the academic year we meet for a research discussion called Research Matters. Visitors are always welcome. Our successful visiting academics program has attracted visitors from the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Canada, USA and the Netherlands. We welcome enquiries from potential visitors who have similar research interests. RESEARCH CAPACITY BUILDING Since 2000 we have been actively engaged in building research capacity in primary health care as part of the University component of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing Primary Health Care Research, Evaluation and Development (PHCRED) Strategy. Together with our partners from the University of Melbourne's Department of Rural Health, Shepparton, the Department of General Practice, Monash University, Clayton, and Monash University's Department of Rural and Indigenous Health, we form the Victorian PHCRED Partnership to offer: The PHCRED Fellowship Scheme Since 2002, we have supported 32 fellows to learn about literature searching, study design, development of study protocols, statistical analyses, ethics applications and writing research papers. The fellowships have enabled GPs and other primary care practitioners to gain hands-on experience of the research process. 2010 Dr Lisa Derigo MB BS MProfAppEthics FRACGP is a GP with both a clinical and research interest in sexual health. She is using her PHCRED grant to research university students' knowledge of Chlamydia. Ms Susannah Summons BSc MSc is a consultant nutritionist working in the area of remote Indigenous health. She is currently undertaking a project to investigate the enablers and barriers to the establishment of remote community gardens as a source of food for remote communities. Dr Amanda Fraser BN MB BS MPH FRACGP is a GP with a special interest in youth health. She is currently undertaking a Master of Philosophy, exploring Medicare independence and health access for young people. Mr Soenke Tremper is a program 3 consultant with the sh ed (Sexual Health, HIV and Hepatitis Education) program, through which Victorian GPs are able to access ongoing education including HIV and Hepatitis C s100 accreditation. 2009 Mrs Maureen Goss BEd DipTeach DipPM is a practice manager at a busy inner city practice. She examined the systems which need to be in place for general practices to be ready to participate in research. Ms Jessica Malcolm is a dietician who has been working in the community health sector. Her research interests are around chronic disease management and social inequalities. Ms Carole Meade BA GDipLib GDipCounselling GDipSocSciGestaltTherapy GDipFamilyTherapy is the clinical care coordinator of a rural general practice. Her research interests include GPs’ understanding of the relationship between depression and Type 2 Diabetes. Carole conducted a qualitative study of GPs in 2009, funded by a PHCRED grant. Dr Jason Ong MB BS FRACGP is a GP working in Prahran. He has a special interest in primary care research in particular, sexual health medicine. He is currently completing his Masters of Medicine in predicting contraceptive use in women. Dr Adeline Ooi MB BS FRACGP works at a general practice seeing many young people, which has led her to her research interest in young women's knowledge about Pap tests. page11
