There’s an update from the UK’s largest choir, Rock
Choir, which recently celebrated its 10th year
anniversary in Birmingham with members from
Norden and Bamford joining in a special parade at
the NEC.
Following on from the article which appeared in
the May issue, Friends of Heritage Green continue
their fight to prevent the sale of Heritage Green and
the building of six houses on the site in order to
ensure a green and open space for recreational
purposes.
Our regular contributor, Alan Valentine, has written
a very interesting piece about the Summit Pass
which links Littleborough and Todmorden.
With Summer upon us and the long school holidays
looming, look out for the next magazine dropping
through your letterbox which will be the bumper
double issue covering both the months of August
and September.
Until then……
Local Care from a Local Company
The team at Home Instead Senior Care in Rochdale is passionate
about providing care to its clients which not only improves the
quality of their lives but those of their families too. The company
specialises in providing care for older people in their own homes.
Commenting on the service, David Bradshaw said, “We are passionate
about providing the highest standard of person-centred care. Our ethos
is simple – treat others as we would wish to be treated ourselves. In
doing this we are improving our clients’ quality of life and helping them
to remain in their own homes, leading an independent life.”
Home Instead clients have a care plan tailored specifically to their own
needs and the service is extremely flexible and ranges from help a few
hours a day to 24 hour care. Services can include personal care such as
assistance with bathing, dressing and medications; home help covering
housework, shopping, meal preparation and household duties; and
companionship services that can involve everything from escorting clients
on visits or appointments to simple conversation and good company.
The company also provides a range of specialist services, which include
Alzheimer’s and dementia care, convalescence care and respite care.
Home Instead Caregivers complete a training programme designed by
national and international renowned dementia and Alzheimer's experts.
This means our Caregivers are provided with the latest in Alzheimer's
education and home care techniques, so clients are assured their loved
one is being cared for by a trusted professional.
The team at Home Instead knows that quality care cannot be delivered
in short, rushed visits so care calls are of a minimum 1 hour duration.
They also understand how important it is for clients to have the right
caregiver for their needs. Time is taken to
carefully match caregivers to clients so that they share common areas
of interest and can form an immediate bond.
Home Instead only employs the most caring, considerate and empathetic
caregivers – people to whom making a difference to the lives of others
is important. Caregivers are carefully selected, are CRB checked and
have to provide six references.
Home Instead Senior Care is committed to making a difference,
and regard it as a special privilege to look after people with love,
care and compassion - they take their responsibilities very
seriously indeed.
Mango, Watermelon and Feta Kebabs
Take straight out of the fridge so the melon is
crisp and juicy, ideal if your having a BBQ and
waiting for your coals to get hot.
Makes 10 Kebabs
1 ripe, seedless watermelon
200g feta cheese
1 ripe mango – peeled
Few sprigs fresh mint
1 tablespoon caster sugar
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
6 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper
Squeeze fresh lemon
Method
1) Remove the outer rind of the watermelon and dice the flesh
into 2cm cubes. Remove any black pips.
2) Cut the feta and mango into the same size cubes.
3) Take a kebab stick and place alternative cubes of the fruits,
cheese and the occasional mint leaf onto the stick.
4) Mix together the sugar, vinegar, olive oil and seasoning and
The UKs largest contemporary
choir celebrates 10 year
anniversary with the stars
Celebrities joined thousands of Rock Choir members including ‘Rockies’ from
Bamford and Norden to party at the Genting Arena in Birmingham this weekend.
Chesney Hawkes and Kiki Dee were among the guests who performed their own well known
hits with the members. They were all made honorary Rock Choir members by founder Caroline Redman
Lusher. In addition, signed birthday wishes were sent from all over the world. Celebrities such as Olly
Murs, Simon Cowell, Chris Evans, Joan Collins and many more sent their best wishes. Their cards will be
auctioned to the general public in June to raise money for the charity, Shooting Star Chase.
Chesney Hawkes was asked how he felt about performing with Rock Choir after the show. Chesney said
“It was an amazing experience being here today. Please have me back!” He went on to say “Rock Choir
is all about community and being together. It’s going to grow and grow.”
One attendee, member and best-selling author Gill Hornby called Rock Choir ‘the biggest national
cultural movement of the decade’.
Rock Choir members from Bamford and Norden joined in a special parade at the NEC on Sunday, the
first of a two night celebration. Each parade consisted of over 130 handmade, personalised flags,
representing their local Rock Choir. Teenagers from Andorra joined Scotland and England Teen Rock
Choir on stage to perform’ Budapest’ by George Ezra.
Rock Choir leader Phil Reynolds, who performed on stage with 56 other Rock Choir leaders from across
the UK said “I’m absolutely blown away by the fantastic sound my members made, the whole weekend
was amazing! Well done to all involved”. Phil also runs weekly choir rehearsals in Middleton, Marple,
Rochdale, Romiley and Saddleworth.
Clare Cook, Head of Campaigns for charity Missing People, thanked the members for their generosity
and support and held a bucket collection at the end of the event and raised an amazing £7000. Clare
said "We are so grateful and blown away by the generosity of the members – thank you to you all, you
really are a lifeline, changing lives through song".
Rock Choir is the UK’s largest contemporary choir, with nearly 17,000 members in over 300 local
communities. There are no auditions and no requirements to read music or have any previous singing
experience. Rock Choir members get together each week to attend fun, friendly rehearsals where they
are taught specially arranged pop and chart songs. There are lots of exciting performances throughout
the year and many of them help raise money for charity.
Rock Choir's uplifting ethos of fun, friendship and community spirit is a huge part of its attraction. At an
individual level, it helps improve people's self-confidence, enables them to develop new singing skills,
and enjoy a dynamic new social life. Singing together and achieving such a great sound gives members
a huge sense of fulfilment. Added to this is the glamour and excitement of performing in public, which
for many is a truly liberating experience
YOUR LOCAL POLICE UPDATE
CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
Stop yourself becoming a target for thieves targeting vehicles
by following our handy tips below.
Make sure you lock your car every time you leave it, even if
it’s only for 2 minutes!
Do not leave Sat Navs and other valuable items in your
vehicle. Sat Navs have been stolen in 5 of the offences that
took place this week.
When leaving your vehicle make sure all your windows are
closed as well as your sunroof.
Think it’s safe to leave things in your boot? It’s not; offenders
can get in here as well!
BMWs STOLEN WITHOUT KEYS BEING USED
There have been a number of BMW vehicles stolen without keys.
Between 2005 and 2012 BMW produce a “security patch” for the
engine management system which will prevent the vehicle from being
stolen without the keys. There is a simple test to see if this patch is
present on any vehicle. With the vehicle locked, take the key from the
key fob and unlock via the driver’s door lock and hold the key in the
unlock position for around five seconds. If the windows automatically
go down then the patch is not present.
If this happens with your vehicle please contact your local BMW
dealerships, for instance BMW Williams at Rochdale to arrange for an
upgrade.
POLICE NEWSFLASH NORDEN
Stocksgate, Hutchinson Road, Claymere Avenue,
Woodhouse Lane, Blackpits Road, Edenfield Road
and five cases on Harewood Road.
There was also one case of theft
of a vehicle. Police officers on
patrol saw the offender
driving the stolen vehicle
and attempted to stop the
vehicle. However, the
vehicle made off
through a red light
driving at over sixty
miles per hour on a thirty
mile per hour road. The vehicle continued at speed and collided with
a tree. The driver exited the vehicle and tried to escape but was
detained by officers.
Heritage Green
The Friends of Heritage Green continues its fight to prevent the sale of Heritage Green
(field at Cut Lane/Caldershaw Road) and the building of six houses and to ensure the
continuing use of this green open space for recreational purposes and leisure-time occupation
by local residents and hopefully to register the space as a Village Green.
Following attendance by many residents and representations by representatives of the Friends
of Heritage Green at the public meeting of the Rochdale Township Committee on 4th March,
the Council agreed to reconsider whether to sell Heritage Green and is expected to decide
its fate on 22nd July at the next meeting.
Since its inception in February this year, the Friends of Heritage Green has mobilised itself
quickly and effectively and achieved the following:
Swelled its “ranks” to 170 people and growing
Formally established itself as a voluntary association with a written constitution
Leafleted 630 households
Submitted 100 petitions and 155 completed questionnaires to the Council evidencing local
opposition to the sale and the wishes of residents for the future of Heritage Green
Launched its own newsletter – the BULLET!
Applied to register Heritage Green as a Village Green
Raised over £300 to fund its activities
Litter picked Heritage Green and continues to do so
Tidied unlawfully felled trees and had felled trees removed by the Council
Published articles in Streetwise, Streetlife, Rochdale Observer, Rochdale Online, and Norden
Village facebook page
Most importantly, Heritage Green is being used and you will have seen the usual activities
such as football, cricket (padded up and with helmets!), dog walking and exercising, horse
riding, bicycle riding and kite flying and also wildlife watching including fish, birds and
ducks but also nocturnal “bat watch” (a colony is nesting on Heritage Green or somewhere close).
The campaign is far from over and participation and support from anyone from Norden,
Caldershaw and surrounding areas, to save this valuable open green space, would be greatly
welcomed and appreciated. Your support could just be to join our group (for free), use
Heritage Green and attend any informal events (rounders match planned), complete a one
page questionnaire (to provide useful evidence that you use Heritage Green), walk with us
in the Norden Carnival, attend the Township Committee (next one on 22nd July at One
Riverside, the Council offices) to show your opposition or support the campaign with time
or money.
The
Summit Pass
The Summit Pass connects Littleborough and Todmorden and for
early engineers provided the easiest way of linking these parts of
Lancashire and Yorkshire.
The road, canal and railway sit closely together, fitting snugly into the
bottom of the valley in many places and from Summit to Littleborough the
River Roch, flowing south, forms a fourth companion.
Prior to the construction of this transport infrastructure the early pack-horse
roads ran high on the edge of the valley, which was then a marshy
wilderness. The original Reddyshore Scout Gate led from Calderbrook
towards where the railway tunnel now starts before heading up the hill side
to reach rocks along which it passed treacherously close to the vertical edge
of the ledge. In the 1700's tradesmen struggled along these roads. John
Wesley described the roads hereabouts as the worst he had ever travelled
upon. Only a few years ago this section was a still a paved track on which
ancient wheel tracks were discernible. In places the cliff had succumbed
and the track had been swallowed up. Now it has been fenced and covered
in tarmac to provide a safe passage for a section of the Pennine Bridleway.
Littleborough and Calderbrook and the start of the pass.
The Rochdale Canal with the road and railway beyond.
In 1795 a new turnpike road was constructed from Rochdale to Todmorden
passing over Calderbrook. The old toll house is still standing at the junction
with the modern road, its Bill of Charges still attached to the wall making
interesting reading. The old road is now closed to traffic but is a lovely
quite walk now so hopefully it will not be opened to vehicles again. As the
road has slipped into the valley in places its re-opening seems very unlikely.
The Rochdale Canal, which was the earliest canal link to cross the Pennines
was completed through the pass in 1804 and a new turnpike road running
along the valley from Littleborough was opened in 1824. The new toll
house still stands besides Littleborough Bridge.
The railway is crossed by the culverted River Roch.
In 1841 the final link, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway was completed
and at the time the Summit Tunnel was the longest in the world.
So on a short walk around Calderbrook and Summit it is possible to see
and understand the development of transport which helped West Yorkshire The 'new' Toll Gate House at Littleborough Bridge.
and East Lancashire develop into the mighty workhouses of the Industrial
Revolution which they became, built on wool, cotton and coal.
Chocolate Chip Brownies
Deliciously crisp on the outside, devilishly gooey on the inside, these
Brownies are simple to make and are always a big hit in our shop! You
can use a mix of milk, white or dark chips too for extra indulgence.
Recipe:
275 grams (10oz) Butter, Softened
375 grams (13oz) Caster Sugar
4 Large Eggs
75 grams (3oz) Cocoa Powder
100 grams (4oz) Self Raising Flour
100 grams (4oz) Plain Chocolate Chips
Method:
Super easy to make, pop all the ingredients
except the Chocolate Chips in to a mixing bowl
and mix well. Then stir through the chocolate
chips until evenly distributed. Pop into a 9" x 13"
(or similar) tray bake pan lined with greaseproof
paper and greased with butter around the edges.
Bake in a pre-heated oven on 180°C (fan
160°C/350°F/Gas 4) for 40-45 minutes, covering
with foil for the last 10 minutes if the outside is
browning too quickly. Your brownie is done when
a skewer inserted in to the middle comes out
clean. Then leave to cool for 10 minutes before
turning out on to a wire rack to cool. Enjoy!
This year, as in the last five, Norden is at the heart of the Rochdale
Village on the morning of Tuesday 14th July ,this year and engage in a
brief tour of our community, taking in the Jubilee Park at the end of
before visiting local schools . The route then moves on along Edenfield
Road to Moorland Avenue with a featured stop at Taylor Park before
heading toCutgate.
villagers and other volunteers from throughout the Rochdale Township area and they
need your help with this years entry. Committee member and local resident Roy Down
explained . " the help local residents and business owners can give will make a crucial
difference to our overall score" The judges mark entries on criteria such as horticultural
A dream come true
The village of Birtle has dreamed of a summer fete for many years, and this year, the
dream became a reality with a huge fete centred around Birtle Riding Stables, Birtle
Church, The Pack Horse and Birtle Brook Village; wherein the original Birtle football field
had been resurrected after 60 years as part of the development just in time for the event.
Inspired by Sally at the Stables, a committee of like-minded local people and businesses
was pulled together for the first time with the sole aim of putting a smile on the face of
Birtle Village, and it did!
The first ever Birtle Fete took place on Saturday and attracted
thousands of people despite the windy conditions and
threatening sky. Fortunately the clouds held their rain for most
of the day allowing the crowds to have a great time amongst
many rides and attractions whilst raising money for Riding for
the disabled.
Interestingly the weather played a significant part before the
event inducing a blind panic as the rain soaked field could not
be accessed, fortunately this was quickly overcome, at very
short notice, with the support of the team at Millers Vanguard
providing manpower and logistical support in order to assist
attractions and the fair onto the field. Once in place, the
inaugural Birtle Village Fete had an authentic village fayre feel
about it, from hand-made cake stalls to traditional tug-ofwar;
from the birds of prey display to canine agility show.
Meanwhile the countless scarecrows dotted around the
village seemed to be enjoying the nostalgia of the Eagley
Brass Band as much as the crowds were.
With many awards presented at the Pack Horse, numerous children enjoying a horse ride
from Birtle Riding Stables, to a traditional fair and numerous stalls at Birtle Brook Village
everybody found something fun to do.
Once again a big thank you must go out to all the
volunteers on the day that made the event a huge
success cementing, for the first time, a true
community feeling within Birtle Village and
surrounding area whilst raising much needed cash
for a very noble cause, well done to all!
BEHIND EVERY GREAT HOLIDAY IS A
GREAT PRIVATE HIRE/TAXI COMPANY
Having booked a 4 star hotel for my annual holiday I wanted a
transfer to the airport to be of an equal standard to start my holiday
off in style.
Having not heard of Junction 21 before I saw their advert in ‘Streetwise’ and decided to
check them out.
Although some of the other firms had the odd review pasted on their websites, Junction 21
had nearly a hundred reviews posted through an independent review company.
Although all of the reviews were great (Junction 21 had an average rating of 4.9 out of 5)
I have posted one of the more recent ones, I will tell you why below.
‘’Having seen this company around the airport I decided to give them a try when I next
travelled and I was really pleased I did.
I was upgraded from bronze to gold which was a lovely surprise and will always be
welcomed! I can see why people would opt for that package as the car was impeccable.
As a whole the service was great and the meet and greet well done and preferable.
This is a family company and the owner’s son who was my driver was charming.
I will be using J21 for my next trip for sure’’
After reading this review I contacted Junction 21 by phone, the owner, John Byrne, answered
my call, he offered me a complimentary upgrade from Bronze to the Gold service as it was
my first booking, indeed he also offered me a small discount if I wanted to pay cash to the
driver on the day.
I decided to book online as it was more convenient to book & pay on line using my credit
card, the process took just 2/3 minutes and the online booking was very easy to do even
though I am not the best on a computer.
I have Just travelled with them again using the Bronze service and was amazed at the quality,
the driver told me that drivers have to work their way up the ladder at Junction 21 and
that in reality the Bronze drivers are trainee Chauffeurs.
Junction 21 against other companies, well the difference in quality is like comparing watching
a colour TV to an old Black & White set.
GREENSLEEVES LAWN CARE OLDHAM BECOMES A
WHICH? TRUSTED TRADER
Greensleeves Lawn Care Oldham can proudly call themselves a Which? Trusted trader, having
recently passed a rigorous assessment that recognises reputable and trustworthy traders.
Consumers in the Oldham area can have further confidence when using Greensleeves Lawn Care due to their Which?
Trusted Traders endorsement. In order to become a Which? Trusted Trader, Greensleeves Lawn Care successfully passed
the endorsement process, including a visit by a professional Which? Trusted Traders assessor with extensive trading
standards experience, as well as completing a company credit check and a random selection of customer references.
Stephen McCluskey, Managing Director of Which? Trusted Traders, said: “We are delighted
to announce Greensleeves Lawn Care Oldham as a Which? Trusted Trader. Our Which? Trusted Traders
service gives consumers the confidence to make the right choices when it comes to finding skilled
professionals and we’re pleased to be able to give traders the chance to distinguish themselves from their
peers. This scheme is a valuable, free resource for consumers and will help banish the risk of bodge jobs.”
Which? Trusted Traders offers additional peace of mind for consumers as they can also benefit from free dispute resolution
from the independent provider Ombudsman Services Ltd, should any issues arise between a trader and customer.
David Truby, Managing Director of Greensleeves Lawn Care said: “All Greensleeves Lawn Care experts are passionate
about lawn care and take pride in delivering a high level of customer service. Being endorsed by an organisation as
well respected as Which? gives our customers and potential customers the peace of mind that they are having their lawn
treated by someone who is highly skilled and will care for their lawn using the correct methods and techniques.”
