Chapter 8: Use <strong>of</strong> Quitting Advice or Products<br />
There are a number <strong>of</strong> products available in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> to help people quit smoking.<br />
Survey respondents aged 15–64 years were asked to identify any help, advice,<br />
programmes or products <strong>the</strong>y used to help <strong>the</strong>m quit during <strong>the</strong>ir most recent quit<br />
attempt. Their responses were grouped into <strong>the</strong> following categories:<br />
<br />
nicotine replacement <strong>the</strong>rapy (nicotine patches, nicotine gum, microtab 9 and nicotine<br />
inhalers)<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r medicinal <strong>the</strong>rapy (lozenges, 10 Zyban 11 and Champix 12 )<br />

GP<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r health care worker (doctor <strong>from</strong> a hospital, dentist, nurse, pharmacist or<br />

advisor not mentioned elsewhere, <strong>the</strong> Internet, a texting service, a self-help book,<br />
some o<strong>the</strong>r product not mentioned elsewhere).<br />
Use <strong>of</strong> any quitting products or advice in most recent quit attempt<br />
More than one-third (37.9%, 33.5–42.3) <strong>of</strong> recent quit attempters used quitting products<br />
or advice in <strong>the</strong>ir most recent quit attempt. There were no significant differences by sex.<br />

Microtab is a sublingual (under <strong>the</strong> tongue) nicotine replacement tablet. Nicotine is released and<br />
absorbed through <strong>the</strong> lining <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mouth.<br />
10 ‘Lozenges’ were not defined in <strong>the</strong> NZTUS <strong>2009</strong> questionnaire. Lozenges may or may not include<br />
nicotine, and as such have not been included in <strong>the</strong> nicotine replacement <strong>the</strong>rapy category.<br />
11 Zyban is an antidepressant and smoking cessation aid. It reduces <strong>the</strong> severity <strong>of</strong> nicotine cravings<br />
and withdrawal symptoms.<br />
12 Champix is a medicine developed specifically as an aid to smoking cessation. It is a nicotinic receptor<br />
partial agonist, and as such reduces cravings for and decreases <strong>the</strong> pleasurable effects <strong>of</strong> cigarettes<br />
and o<strong>the</strong>r tobacco products.<br />
