Reasons for quitting<br />
The most common reason that recent quit attempters gave for <strong>the</strong>ir most recent quit<br />
attempt was <strong>the</strong>ir own health (Figure 27).<br />

Younger recent quit attempters were more likely to cite cost as a reason for <strong>the</strong>ir most<br />
recent quit attempt than those in <strong>the</strong> older age groups.<br />
After adjusting for age, recent quit attempters in <strong>the</strong> least deprived areas were found to<br />
be more likely than those in <strong>the</strong> most deprived areas to give <strong>the</strong> following reasons for<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir most recent quit attempt: <strong>the</strong>ir own health, sick <strong>of</strong> smoking, pressure <strong>from</strong><br />
family/friends, smoking is antisocial/not socially acceptable.<br />
All four ethnic groups (European/O<strong>the</strong>r, Māori, Pacific, Asian) gave <strong>the</strong> same top four<br />
reasons for <strong>the</strong>ir most recent quit attempt, as follows: <strong>the</strong>ir own health, cost, sick <strong>of</strong><br />
smoking, and someone else’s health. After adjusting for age, European/O<strong>the</strong>r recent<br />
quit attempters were found to be more likely than all recent quit attempters to give <strong>the</strong><br />
following reasons for <strong>the</strong>ir most recent quit attempt: <strong>the</strong>ir own health, sick <strong>of</strong> smoking,<br />
and smoking is antisocial/not socially acceptable.<br />
