The most common place for youth current smokers to purchase their cigarettes in the
month preceding the survey was from a dairy or other shop, followed by a petrol station
(Figure 26). More than half of illegal sales of cigarettes to those under the age of
18 years took place in a dairy/other shop, while around one in five took place in a petrol
station.
Youth were also asked about the purchase of cigarettes by mail order/Internet and duty
free. These results are not shown on the graph, because no youth who took part in the
survey purchased cigarettes or tobacco products by mail order or the Internet and very
few purchased cigarettes duty free.
