Total response ethnicity involves each person being allocated to all<br />

ethnic groups <strong>the</strong>y have identified with. This means that if someone<br />

identifies as being Chinese and Māori, <strong>the</strong>y are classified as both<br />

Asian and Māori for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> analysis; in o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong>y will<br />

appear in <strong>the</strong> estimates for both <strong>the</strong> Māori population and <strong>the</strong> Asian<br />

population. This results in overlapping groups, and so <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ethnic group populations exceeds <strong>the</strong> total <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong><br />

population (<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> 2004).<br />
