Annual Appeal Parishes Receive Funds Hollidaysburg: Twentyone parishes will receive overgoal refunds this month from the Finance Office for exceeding their respective Annual Catholic Appeal goals. This number of parishes represents an increase of 50% over the number of parishes receiving refunds last June. The total amount refunded to these parishes since May stands at $89,715.00. All over-goal receipts are returned to parishes and are free from any diocesan assessments. Annual Catholic Appeal gifts benefit parishes initially, then are allocated to provide partial funding for several dozen diocesan ministries charged with bringing Jesus Christ to individuals and families who rely on them for spiritual or financial assistance. ACA gifts help the Vocations Office cover additional expenses for the formation of our new seminarians. Gifts also allow the Liturgy Office and the Family Life Office to coordinate this year’s “Marriage Building Initiative.” On September 22, ACA gifts will allow several ministries to recruit keynote and break-out presenters for the Catholic Life Conference. These are just a few examples of ACA gifts at work in the Church. An Annual Catholic Appeal gift can be made either through your parish or at any time of day via the green “Donate” icon on the diocesan website (www. dioceseaj.org). A campaign progress report of all parishes is posted each Tuesday on the “Diocesan Mailing” page of the same diocesan website. (CNS) -- The Vatican’s June 28 decree that U.S. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen lived a life of heroic virtues and should be considered venerable -- advancing his sainthood cause -- prompted much rejoicing in his home state of Illinois. “This is a great day for the Catholic Diocese of Peoria and the Catholic Church in America,” said Bishop Daniel R. Jenky of Peoria, who added that the “heroic virtues of a son from central Illinois and a priest of Peoria have been recognized by the Catholic Church.” “Fulton Sheen’s zeal, wisdom, and holiness should help us build our faith,” he said. Msgr. Stanley Deptula, executive director of the Archbishop Fulton John Sheen Foundation in Peoria, said it was “not a coincidence that the church VENERABLE ARCHBISHOP FULTON J. SHEEN would render its decision on the heroic virtue of Archbishop Sheen on the same day as the Supreme Court issues its decision on the health care plan.” He said the timing of the announcement shows how the church in the United States “needs heroes” and that Archbishop Sheen can “be an inspiration and a consolation to our bishops and other church leaders” since he was “a man of courage, and priest of prayer.” The decree issued by the Congregation for Saints’ Causes and signed by Pope Benedict XVI said Archbishop Sheen should be considered venerable because he heroically lived Christian virtues. In general, the church must then confirm two miracles before sainthood is declared. The first miracle is needed for beatification and the second for canonization.
