Adult Enrichment Johnstown: The Office of Adult Enrichment and Lay Ecclesial Ministry (AELEM) has recently announced the new schedule of classes to begin this fall. The AELEM program offers two methods of study for lay men and women in the Diocese. The programs are designed to provide academic, pastoral, and spiritual formation while meeting the challenge of responding to the call of life-long adult faith formation as set forth by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Adult Enrichment allows individuals to continue ongoing adult faith formation while obtaining a deeper understanding of the Catholic Faith. Although enrolled in classes with individuals who are in the lay formation process, participants in Adult Enrichment need not follow the same sequence of courses. Individuals wishing to earn diocesan certification in Basic Lay Ministry may enroll in the Lay Ecclesial Ministry Program. This program requires a commitment of two to three years as participants complete a sequence of courses, as outlined OUR LADY OF FATIMA: Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Altoona, celebrated Confirmation on Wednesday, May 23. Those who wish to may continue for a specialized Third Year Track, earning a diocesan Advanced Lay Ecclesial Ministry Certification. Deacon Michael Russo, ministerial coordinator of the program is happy with the courses being offered this year. “We ask the participants to complete an anonymous evaluation at the end of each course to help us determine the effectiveness of the course, how it was received by the participants and also suggestions on improvements for the future.” Deacon Russo said. “We are constantly looking to improve the programs and have made some significant changes in the overall structure of the program to be introduced in the fall.” Among the subjects that frequently came up was the need to update both print and media materials that some classes use and an interest in more in-depth courses. “It is obvious from the comments on the evaluation forms SAINT JOSEPH, WILLIAMSBURG: First Holy Communion was celebrated Sunday, May 20 at Saint Joseph Parish, Williamsburg. In response to this, course material is being reviewed and two new classes have been added to the AELEM program for the 2012-2013 academic year that go beyond the basic courses, offering participants a more challenging study. “Sacred Scripture Revisited,” which is to be offered this fall, is a theological examination of the biblical record of God’s saving interaction with His people through His Word, Jesus. It is a general introduction to the Scriptures through an analysis of their forms and content. Some emphasis will also be given to biblical scholarship, the nature of exegesis, hermeneutics and literary tools for biblical study. (Continued On Page 3.)
