West Maldon
Community Centre
Many and varied clubs hire
the Centre for functions. Two
of these are Blackwater Judo
Club run by John Pegram,
and Limebrook U3A – the
newest U3A in Maldon.
Below is a short rundown of
these clubs.
Limebrook U3A
Limebrook U3A is the newest U3A group in Maldon and is growing
fast. It is for people who have retired from employment but certainly
not from life. We have monthly meeting at WMCC which feature a
guest speaker, a cuppa and a lot of friendly chat.
Our interest groups meet regularly and range from walking to fl ower
arranging, and from local history to petanque with many other interests
in between.
If you are interested in joining us either visit the website at www.
limebrookU3A.org.uk or phone 01621855883 for more details.
Blackwater Judo Club
The Blackwater Judo Club (Maldon) started its life at West Maldon
Community Centre in 1996 run by volunteers as a community Martial
Arts sport, initially for children ages 6 to 15 inclusive, and soon
became a success because of the cost to train each week on a “only
pay for the days attended” and the calm and pleasant surroundings.
It wasn’t long before watching parents soon requested a senior
session take place and once again was a success amongst adults.
We have been at the centre for 16 years and have seen the club grow
from strength to strength with a membership of 160 from 6 years to 66
years of age.
The cost is just £2 per person per attendance with a subsidy for 3 or
more from the same family attending, plus an annual membership
currently £10.
Our record goes before us with many awards won at competitions
to personal award such as “AEJF club of the year”, “Maldon Mayors
Award”, Heart for SX Heroes award” for our charity work and two gold
accreditations from Essex County Council for being “a well run club”
plus many more.
Our mission statement is simple “An affordable Martial Arts club
instructed by volunteers, for all with no discrimination for anyone
wishing to take part”.
Town Mayor of Maldon’s Blog
14th - 24th June 2012
The Town Mayor of Maldon is Cllr. Peter Stilts
and his wife Jeanette supports him as his
Mayoress. Jeanette is also a Town Councillor.
On Thursday the 14th June the Mayoress
along with the Town Clerk went to Judge the
communal garden entrees for Maldon in Bloom
this had been postponed from Monday due to
the weather. It was impressive to see the high
standard of work being made.
On Friday the 15th the Mayoress and I attended
the presentation of the glass bead to the Maldon
District Chairman at the library and listened to
the children signing the national anthems of the
different countries which will be taking part in the
Olympics.
We then went into the Town Hall for the very
hard job of judging the high standard of art work
by children of the town for the Maldon in Bloom
competition.
On Saturday the 16th we attended the Garden
Party at St Peter’s Care Home and it was lovely
to be given a tour of the home by the new
manageress.
We then had a dash from there to the Moot Hall
balcony to watch the procession of “Mariana
the Mighty” go down the High Street. We were
asked to join the back of the procession which
we did and had the pleasure of the crowd also
walking with us to the Prom Park where the
presentation of the glass bead was made to
‘Mariana’.
On Thursday the 21st June I presented the
Mr Michael Bardo – 2nd place in the Best Front
Garden category
certifi cates to all the “Maldon in Bloom” winners
and it was so nice to see so many people turn
up for the awards ceremony and especially the
children who had made pictures and gardens.
Best Community Garden
Maldon Blackwater U3A - Best Community Garden –
the corner of New street/Fambridge Road
St Francis RC Primary School – Sadd’s Cup for Best
Nursery/Infant School project
My thanks go to Bobby who is chairperson of
“Maldon in Bloom”, the committee and town
council staff in getting everything done.
We had the pleasure of starting a new tradition
by presenting the “Sadds Cup” to the best
overall infant/primary
school. St Francis’s
School was this
year’s winner.
I later learnt that, ironically, the building now
occupied by St Francis’s School had formally
been the Sadds family home.
Friday the 22nd the Mayoress and I attended a
Cream tea in aid of the RNLI and Air Ambulance
and despite the rain just before it opened the rain
stayed away whilst we sat on the lawn having
our cream tea.
In the evening we attended another brilliant
production of ‘‘Shakespeare in the Park’’ by the
“Mac Theatre”. To see Shakespeare produced in
a 2012 setting made it all the more enjoyable.
On Saturday 23rd I opened St Marys Church
fete, it was so nice to see the small family run
stalls provided for both the children’s as well
as the adult’s entertainment. Also I attended
the talk on the history of the church given by
Stephen Nunn, my Deputy Mayor.
A rubbish town!
I recently visited friends in Kent and (unusually
for me) remarked on how pretty and tidy their
town was. Since I’ve returned, I keep seeing
rubbish. Everywhere!
I’m not talking about rubbish that may have
blown out of a bin or been accidentally dropped
on the way to the tip or something. I’m talking
about the wilful, disrespectful and inconsiderate
disposal of rubbish.
Only yesterday I saw someone throw a takeaway
bag out of their car window whilst travelling on
the bypass. As I passed, I saw that it was a
middle-aged lady. Disgraceful, and no example
to our children. I’m seeing it everywhere and it
seems that people just don’t care.
I don’t buy into ‘there aren’t enough bins’. Keep
the rubbish then – until you DO see a bin. Sure,
the council can put more bins about but at what
cost, and to whom?
Please, let’s take responsibility for our own
rubbish and maintain a town we can feel proud
of. Look around today - you’ll see what I mean!
Ruby Birthstone of July
Rubies are one of the four Cardinal Gems, along with sapphire,
emerald and diamond.
They are the red variety of the mineral corundum, one of the hardest on
the planet, second only to diamond, rating 9 on the Moh Scale. All other
colours of the same mineral are known as sapphire.
Its name is derived from the Latin ‘ruber’ meaning
quite literally ‘red’. Its colour is the result of
the presence of chromium. It is chromium,
however, which is also responsible for the
scarcity of the gem occurring in large sizes.
The presence of chromium at the ‘birth’ of the
gem is the reason for the multitude of fi ssures
inside the crystals inhibiting their growth.
All natural rubies have imperfections in them – particularly their rutile like
needle inclusions known as ‘silk’. It is these inclusions by which a gem is
identifi ed as a ruby and which distinguish them from any other simulant or
substitute. Some rubies display a three or six-pointed asterism or ‘star’
(see picture below) which, when the stone is cut as cabochon, chase
across the stone when it is moved. It is a feature which increases such
a stones value. As with diamonds, cut; colour; clarity and mass directly
infl uence the value of a ruby.
Only in the early 19th century was it discovered that rubies are part of the
corundum family and not, as previously thought, related to spinels and
garnets. It is now known, therefore, that two of the prizes in the British
Crown Jewels are misnomers: both the ‘Black Ruby’ and the ‘Timur Ruby’
are in fact spinels.
Rubies have always been held in high esteem in Asian countries. They
feature heavily in folklore and were used to decorate weaponry and fi ne
jewellery in both India and China. They are also said to secure good
fortune to the structure of buildings and relationships.
Rubies are regarded as a symbol of devotion, honesty and valour.
Pop in to Read & Simpson to learn in greater detail
about rubies, how they can be cut and mounted and
to see examples to suit all pockets.
DID YOU KNOW?...
One of the finest rubies in the world is housed at the National Museum of
Natural History in Washington. Mined in the 1930’s this Burmese beauty
measures over 23 carats and is set in a platinum ring with diamonds.
In December 2011, a ring auctioned as part of the Elizabeth Taylor
collection at Christies broke the ‘price-per-carat’ record when it sold for
almost $513,000 per carat – over $4.4million for the piece. A necklace
of hers reached in excess of $3.7million in the same auction.
Dog Obesity
By Marc Rudd - Pawz Outdoors Tel: 01621 840463
There are many reasons a dog can become overweight, for example they
may have had an illness or injury, been neutered or had an unsuitable diet
and insuffi cient exercise. Obesity seriously increases the chance of your
pet having heart problems, diabetes, breathing diffi culties and arthritis.
Once your pet is overweight it becomes a vicious circle - their activity level
decreases, making it harder to loose the pounds. It’s easy to fi nd yourself
in this situation as living with your pet, seeing them everyday small weight
gains can go unnoticed.
If you think your dog is
overweight there are a couple
of ways to check. Look at
your pet from the side - their
belly should be tucked up,
also if you feel their ribs
you should be able to do so
without feeling a covering of
excess fat.
Consult your vet if you are unsure. If you do fi nd that your pet is carrying
extra weight, this can be easily remedied.
Treatment should fi rst entail fi nding out your pet’s ideal weight, which can
be done either by contacting your vet or going online. LIFE Magazine
has put a chart on their website at www.estuarylife.co.uk/dog-obesity
which you may fi nd a helpful reference guide. After establishing your dogs
optimuml weight, weigh your dog and keep a record.
Cut back on the quantity at meal times - no extra tit bits and if your dog is
still hungry, then bulk out the meal with vegetables.
Increase their exercise - if they are at a point where they are very heavy,
increase the amount of walks but with less time so as not to put too much
preassure on their joints. If possible get them swimming, as this is a great
way to exercice without stressing the joints.
Carry out regular weigh-in’s to keep a close watch on diet and ensure a
slow, steady loss. Food intake can be monitored and adjusted accordingly
to keep you on track, which will improve
the quality of life for both you and
your pet - helping them to be
the best they can.
Neck and Shoulder pain
This month we are going to take a look
at mechanical shoulder pain
Have I got a ‘Frozen Shoulder’?
Frozen Shoulder, also called Adhesive
Capsulitis, is a painful condition. It results in a
severe loss of motion in the shoulder. It may
follow an injury, or it may arise gradually with no injury or warning and most
commonly affects patients between the ages of 40 to 60 years old, and it is
twice as common in women as in men
The shoulder is made up of three bones: the scapula (shoulder blade), the
humerus (upper arm bone), and the clavicle (collarbone). The joint capsule is a
sac that encloses the joint and the fl uids that bathe and lubricate it. The walls
of the joint capsule are made up of ligaments. Ligaments are soft connective
tissues that attach bones to bones. The joint capsule has a considerable
amount of slack, loose tissue, so the shoulder is unrestricted as it moves
through its large range of motion.
In frozen shoulder, infl ammation in the joint makes the normally loose parts
of the joint capsule stick together. This seriously limits the shoulder’s ability
to move, and causes the shoulder to freeze. The cause of frozen shoulder
is largely a mystery. One theory is that it may be caused by an autoimmune
reaction. In an autoimmune reaction, the body’s defense system, which
normally protects it from infection, mistakenly begins to attack the tissues of the
body. This causes an intense infl ammatory reaction in the tissue that is under
attack. Frozen shoulder may begin after a shoulder injury, fracture, or surgery.
It can also start if the shoulder is not being used.
Other shoulder problems like bursitis, rotator
cuff tears, or impingement syndrome can end up
causing a frozen shoulder.
We are located in the heart of Maldon adjacent to the White Horse car park
and our team aim to provide the best possible care in pleasant surroundings.
If you wish to discuss an injury or treatment, please contact us.
How is it treated?
Treatment of frozen shoulder can be frustrating and slow. Most cases
eventually improve, but the process may take some time. The aim of treatment
is to decrease infl ammation and increase the range of motion of the shoulder.
Osteopathic treatment is a critical part of helping you regain the motion and
function of your shoulder. Treatments are directed at getting the muscles to
relax using techniques to stretch the joint capsule and muscle tissues of the
shoulder. You will also be given exercises and stretches to do as part of a
home program. You may need treatment for three to four months before you
get full shoulder motion and function back.Your doctor may also recommend an
injection of cortisone to get the infl ammation
under control. Cortisone is a steroid that is
very effective at reducing infl ammation. If your
progress is slow your Doctor may offer you
manipulation under anesthetic
Biceps Tendonitis.
Fortunately Biceps tendonitis and rotator cuff
problems are far more common than frozen
shoulders and with treatment, usually resolve
more quickly.
Symptoms
Patients generally report the feeling of a
deep ache directly in the front and top of the
shoulder. The ache may spread down into the
main part of the biceps muscle. Pain is usually
made worse with overhead activities. Resting the shoulder generally eases the
intense pain but can cause aching and discomfort.
The arm may feel weak with attempts to bend the elbow or when twisting the
forearm into supination (palm up). A catching or slipping sensation felt near the
top of the biceps muscle may suggest a tear of the transverse humeral ligament.
How Rotator Cuff injuries differ.
The symptoms of frozen shoulder are primarily
shoulder pain and a reduced range of motion
in the joint. The range of motion is the same
whether you are trying to move the shoulder yourself or someone else is trying
to move the arm for you. There comes a point in each direction of movement
where the motion simply stops, as if something is blocking it. At this point, the
shoulder usually hurts. The shoulder can also be quite painful at night. The
tightness in the shoulder can make it diffi cult to do regular activities like getting
dressed, combing your hair, or reaching across a table.
Treatment for Biceps tendonitis has similarities to that of Frozen Shoulder
and is directed at reducing the infl ammation and pain, increasing the range of
movement and gradually strengthening the shoulder with directed home exercise.
Hot and cold therapy as described in previous articles will help to reduce pain
and promote healing.
About Canine Partners:
Canine Partners is a registered charity that assists people with
disabilities to enjoy a greater independence and quality of life
through the provision of specially trained dogs, whose well-being is
a key consideration. More than 1.2 million people in the UK use a
wheelchair, and a signifi cant number of those would benefi t from a
canine partner. The dogs are carefully matched to the applicant’s
needs and lifestyle, no matter how challenging.
They are trained to help with everyday tasks such as opening
and shutting doors, unloading the washing machine, picking up
dropped items, pressing buttons and switches and getting help in
an emergency. The Charity aims to train dogs to meet the needs of
people with even the most complex disabilities including members of
HM Armed Forces.
These life transforming dogs also provide practical, physiological,
psychological and social benefi ts including increased independence
and confi dence as well as increased motivation and self-esteem. A
canine partner also brings companionship, a sense of security and
increases social interaction.
Canine Partners receives no government funding and is wholly
dependent on public donations and legacies.
Maldon Town Hall Rolls Out
The Red Green Carpets!
Q: When did Maldon Carpet Bowls Club start?
A: Maldon CBC started in January 2012 with an introductory evening.
This was a great success with over 30 people turning up to try out the
game.
The fi rst weekly club night was on 2nd February.
Q: So what’s happened since then?
A: Club nights have been run on Thursday evenings at the Town Hall
from 7-9pm and we have had on average 20 people per session.
Starting with two carpets with one borrowed from Maldon (outdoor) Bowls
Club, we recently procured a third allowing for up to 24 people to play at
one time.
Q: So who can be a member and what do they need to
do to join?
A: Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to attend. There is no annual
membership fee – just pay £2 on the door and 50p for a drink at half-time.
No special equipment or clothing is required although we ask that suitable
footwear be worn (no high heels or sandals for obvious reasons).
Flat soled shoes or trainers are ideal. Then just turn up and pay ‘n play!
Q: How can people contact the club?
A: They can contact Paul on 07989 748266, or Ivy on 01621
841654. It’s always best to phone before turning up.
Q: What happens on a club night?
A: A typical evening session starts with bowls at 7pm.
We break for drinks and a chat at around 7.45pm followed by more bowls
until about 9pm. The evening is very sociable with the emphasis on lighthearted
play rather than serious bowling, but we cater for all types!
Q: What other events have been organised?
A: A special daytime ‘Soup Bowl’ was run in April. Members enjoyed a
lunch of soup with French bread and rolls, and of course, bowling!
More recently a team of 14 travelled to Maylandsea for a ‘friendly’ match.
We didn’t fair too well, losing all the games, but we won the raffl e 5-3!
We’re looking forward to a return match later this year.
Health professionals urge people to make most of
Free NHS support & advice service
People in north, mid and west Essex are being urged to use a free
service offering confi dential advice and support to NHS patients and
their families or carers.
The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) was set up in 2002
and has helped thousands of people with numerous issues relating
to the NHS. The service offers information on NHS services, help to
resolve problems and provides a listening ear for any concerns and
suggestions people may have.
To coincide with the East of England PALS Awareness Week, which
runs from 18-22 June, people in parts of Essex are being reminded of
how the service can be benefi cial to them.
Cheryle Mack, PALS Manager for NHS Mid Essex, said: “PALS is
often the fi rst port of call for patients who need advice and support
and our teams across north, mid and west Essex are highly trained
and willing to offer the best available advice.
“Our aim is always to offer friendly and useful advice, support and
understanding which is accessible to all. We are always happy to listen in a
caring, non-judgmental manner. People should not be shy about contacting
us about any NHS issue as we are constantly looking at ways of improving
our services so information we receive from the public is essential in
helping us to develop health services of the very highest standards.”
Garden Life By Christine Robson
I am focusing on a tree again this
month. The Pryus-ornamental
pear. I have not come across many
of these during my gardening life
which is surprising given that they
will thrive in any reasonable garden
soil, and best of all in full sun. The
one shown in the photo is Pryussalicifolia-pendula.
It can reach
20ft when fully grown but the one
shown here has been exceptionally
well manicured and is kept to a
manageable size. You will see from
the photos that it has narrow silvery
leaves and clusters of creamy white
fl owers which appear in April. These are followed by small extremely
hard pears which are completely inedible!
Any pruning that needs to be done should
take place in the wintertime removing any
dead or damaged wood at this time.
Pruning
Early fl owering perennials such as
paeonies, lupins, aqualegias, should be
deadheaded but do not remove the foliage
until late September. To make a border
look tidier cranesbill geraniums can have
all the foliage cut back - they will still have
a second fl owering. It is not too late to prune Rosa Canary Bird, Ribes,
(ornamental currant) or Fatsia Japonica. Prune Ribes by reducing all
stems which have produced fl owers this season by about half and one
or two very old stems at ground level. As for the Fatsia, well what can I
say! Such a small plant does grow very quickly into something almost
unmanageable but it doesn’t seem to to mind how you prune it. Not for
the small garden this one.
HOTEL & TICKET OFFER - August until December 2012
At least that’s what I thought and
so would most of you I suspect.
So, if someone told you that
for 6 weeks they lay down for
45 minutes 2 - 3 times a week
- enjoying pleasant conversation
plus a relaxing ‘massage’ and, at the
end of it they’d lost 9lbs plus 4 inches
off their stomach, 4 off their hips and 2 off each leg plus got fi rmer, my guess is
that you’d think “Yeah, right!”
Well, someone is going to tell you just that, and that someone is me. And the
photos below are of me (cringe) - a local mum in her late 40’s who was offered the
opportunity to trial a procedure called Lipomassage, which claims to ‘permanently
eliminate stubborn and resistant fat’.
I’m a no nonsense kinda gal – I say
it like it is and don’t hold back. I’m
one of those annoying people who
never really struggled with weight
and more annoyingly, would tell my
friends (yes, I still have a few) that
quite simply, “fat people eat too
much” because, well, it’s true isn’t
it? Then I got married and had a few children. Not so smug now, am I! Because
as you get older it IS harder to shift fat and after kids it IS harder to have a routine
for yourself. I believed that such ‘before and after’ pictures were airbrushed and
that this type of procedure offers false hope and little else to those with more
money than sense because a correct diet and regular exercise must become a
lifestyle choice if you want to achieve a good body shape that lasts – there are no
short cuts or cheats.
So, how do I explain the results then?
Truthfully I’m surprised by them. Not
just by the inch loss but the general tone
and shape of me now. I understand the
principal of the procedure but can’t get my
head around how good my results were,
especially given that I wasn’t too bad to
start with (humour me here please). During
the treatment I went swimming once or
twice a week but I do that anyway - it was nothing new, I have good muscle tone
from being fit and active when I was younger and I’m sure that helped and, I do eat
a healthy diet but even so, the results are amazing. I had expected only to use it
as a supplement to my own regime – to maybe kick start and motivate me to get
back into the fitness swing of things after having my family.
Effortless fat loss & toning...? Fat chance!
I wont waffl e about the technical stuff - you can fi nd out a lot
more from my LIFE Blog at www.estuarylife.co.uk but here
is my synopsis: Little rollers gently yet powerfully roll and
pull across your skin in different directions, breaking down
fat, stimulating blood and circulation, speeding metabolism,
promoting Collagen and Elastin production and, firming saggy
skin. Oh, and you wear a fl attering (not!) white body stocking!
I felt an occasional ‘pinch’ as the rollers worked on me and I might have winced
once or twice during the whole course but mostly I found it incredibly relaxing
and enjoyable and I’m sad it’s over. The procedure was developed in France –
originally to treat muscle injury but other benefi ts were discovered and developers
have performed over 100 scientifi c studies, with proven results.
The cost? It averages at £60 per session, with good deals available for block
bookings. I had 16 sessions, with a fully trained individual, which it seems you
can get for £750 to £850, taking it below £47 per session.
The closest place to have it done is Tiptree – at Heaven Scent, which is where
I went but the cost sadly doesn’t include the two dresses, necklace and handbag
I also bought there. Divine! Well, a girls gotta treat herself and the dresses were
essential for showing off my new body, weren’t they!?
As I’ve said before, a good healthy diet plus exercise will ensure you maintain a
healthy body but if you need some help getting there, this is defi nitely worth a try
in my view. I can’t promise the same results as me but if you commit to a little
exercise in between sessions, then you stand the best chance. And, you can have
maintenance sessions if you want - to keep you on the straight and narrow.
And, the great news is that Heaven Scent have generously offered the same
16 treatments for just £700 to LIFE readers, bringing the cost down to just
£43.75 per session! You can also collect the token below, plus another
next month and receive a free ‘maintenance’ session worth £70.
If you have any questions, email me at lucybrownGAT@estuarylife.co.uk or, you
can call Dawn at Heaven Scent on 01621 817863. Incidentally, I did explain to
Dawn that with her elevated position as ‘Goddess’ in my mind, that I may sadly
lose all respect for her if she doesn’t now fi nd a way to knock 10 years off my
looks! Watch this space....
a boy called Jon who has a hard time at home, at school and on
the streets. Nobody wants to help (except the reader) until he is
injured and the casualty nurse puts him in touch with someone. It provides a different
perspective on the working-class, under-privalidged society who we can so easily brush
under the carpet as lesser mortals. Perhaps there may be greater tolerance in society if
all teenagers were made to read books like this.
Wedding Feature
Picture Perfect
Photography is an extremely important part of your wedding planning. Once
the big day is over, you will want your memories preserved for a lifetime.
Professional Photographer Robert Scott, BA Hons.,owner of Pure Feather
Wedding Photography, suggests 6 simple steps to fi nding the right one!
I know I’m being a bit biased as I’m a Wedding Photographer, but once the food
is eaten and the champagne is drunk, the only thing left to remind you about
your special day are your wedding pictures. Finding the right photographer can
be a bit daunting, just follow these simple steps to help you fi nd the perfect one.
1. RESEARCH! Ask your friends and family for recommendations! Wedding
web sites, magazines and local publications can really help. Don’t just go for
the fi rst one you come across, have a minimum of 3 to compare.
2. What STYLE of photography are you looking for? If you have a particular
style in mind, choose photographers who shoot in this way.
3. Once you have decided on the style of photography and narrowed your
choices down to a handful, it’s time to meet the photographer. It is so important
to feel at ease with them.
Wedding Feature
Mersea Island’s very own classy covers band!
Whatever you have in mind for your special day, we look forward to working
with you to provide the very best live music that Mersea Island has to offer.
• Solo voice during the wedding service,
classical and modern repertoire.
• Cocktail piano or jazz band to play through
drinks reception and wedding breakfast.
• Five piece dance band to get the party going with a swing.
On a budget?
Most wedding magazines such as popular You
and Your Wedding (www.youandyourwedding.
co.uk) and Wedding Magazine (www.
weddingmagazine.co.uk) publish online, plus
there are lots of other great wedding supplier
and resource sites.
Try www.confetti.co.uk and www.cheapwedding-success.co.uk
to keep you
topped up with inspiration free of charge.
From starting out and planning, to the
invitations, venue, reception, wedding cake,
music, fl owers and honeymoon - you name it,
there are tips and advice on it.
Confetti also has offers and competitions and a
forum for sharing stories and asking for advice
and tips from other brides.
4. LOOK through a complete wedding in the past year, not just key images
selected by the photographer. This will give you an indication on the style and flow.
5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, for example:
• Will you be the photographer attending our day?
• What does the price include? for example: CD’s images and printing. Always
fi nalise the TOTAL COST.
• Are you insured? Do you carry spare equipment, what if you are ill?
6. Finally - to look your absolute best you may want to consider your skincare
regime and employing hair and beauty professionals to achieve that perfect
look. If you have done your research, met your photographer, looked through
their work and asked lots of questions, you are well on your way in fi nding the
Perfect Photographer for your day.
Zoo News
Francois langurs join collection
A pair of male and female francois langurs joined the zoo’s collection in
May 2012. The male arrived from Twycross Zoo and the female arrived
from Howletts Zoo later in the month.
After a settling in period, the pair were united
and settled in well with each other and their new
surroundings. They can currently be seen housed
temporarily in the old L’hoest monkey enclosure within
the Chimp World exhibit. It is hoped that in the future,
the pair will become a successful breeding pair and
allow the zoo to contribute to the conservation of this
important species.
The francois langur is listed as endangered on the
IUCN Red List. Found within Southern China, extending towards the
Red River in north-eastern Vietnam, they inhabit semi tropical forest and
well sheltered rocky areas and typically live above 230 metres. Francois
langurs have a distinctive pointed, tall crest of hair on their heads, with
white lines from the corners of the mouth, across the cheeks to the ears.
This species of langur does not have cheek pouches and instead make
use of a bulging stomach which collects slow-to-digest food; typically
leaf matter. Threats posed to this species in the wild arise from habitat
loss and fragmentation due to changes in agricultural practises, leaving
an isolated population and causing lack of genetic variability. The
species also faces threat from hunting, both for food for the production of
traditional medicines.
The pitter patter of heavy Rhino feet will be heard
soon at Kingdom of the Wild! The zoo are proud
to confi rm that Emily, one of their white rhinos
successfully conceived in December through a
natural mating with their male white rhino, Otto.
This will be Emily and Otto’s fi rst calf! Keepers
were alerted to the pregnancy through the fact
that not only was Emily missing monthly cycles
but there was an observational change in her
behaviour. Emily usually charges around the
paddock playing with Zamba, the youngest rhino, Picture: Helen Wildin
however keepers noticed that she had become more
conservative, staying with the females within the group and showing a
grumpy attitude towards Otto. The pregnancy was confi rmed through
faecal samples, measuring Emily’s hormone levels.
The fi rst fi ve months of a rhino’s pregnancy are the most delicate but
Colchester Zoo are happy that Emily has now passed this stage and
hope the pregnancy is as smooth as it can be for Emily as a fi rst time
mum. Rhino’s have a 16 month gestation period resulting in Emily being
due around June or even July 2013 if she ends up being over a month
late similar to Colchester Zoo’s fi rst white rhino calf, Zamba.
The white rhino is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list. Colchester
Zoo are happy to be part of conserving this magnifi cent species and are
proud to be having success with the current breeding programme.
Appeal for Homes
Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare is a registered charity devoted to the welfare
of needy animals - many abandoned, some victims of accidents, most need a
home. Volunteers devote hours looking after them until owners are found. Those
who can’t be homed are fostered or become permanent SESAW residents.
Albie & Beano,
1 year old
Lurchers, need
to be family pets
(not working).
Bella is a beautiful,
affectionate and gentle
3 year old cat who
absolutely hates other
cats, so must be the only
cat in the home.
Jack I lived with his
previous owners all of
his life (about 9 years)
until they moved. He
needs to be the only
pet and loves people, walks and
cuddles.
12 year old Jem lost his
owner and would like a
home with someone who
is retired and who would
like a bed companion (or
sofa companion!). He still enjoys
gentle walks.
Panther is a beautiful 4
year old neutered male.
He’s in a foster home
because he wasn’t coping well in the
cattery. We’d like to home him in
Hadleigh ASAP. He’s soft natured,
doesn’t like change and sometimes
hides somewhere quiet. His foster
mum loves him and we’re sure his
new owner(s) will, too!
Felix is about 4 years old
and a stray. He’d like a
rural home where there
is a lockable cat fl ap so
that he can explore during the day
and stay safe indoors at night.
Ray is about 3 years
old. An extremely
handsome boy who is
very friendly.
Pepsi was kicked out
because her owners
got 2 puppies. She’s
an older, blind cat but
manages very well. Needs a quiet
indoor home and quiet, friendly
voice. Sweet and gentle, purrs a lot!
Amber is a Persian X
female. Gentle, loving
cat. Must be the only pet
in an adult only home.
Poppy is a Border Terrier
X and very cute. She
loves people. Just
arrived and currently
being assessed.
We have a number of
We probe John Fisher following his interview last month with Emine Saner at The Guardian
Bodybuilding. Why?
Jodie Marsh’s recent publicity and an MP’s son’s ambitions have raised the profi le of bodybuilding lately...
We asked John Fisher, 49 - former British
Bodybuilding Champion and Mr Universe
contender, who currently coaches at Old
Iron Works Gym “What’s the appeal - how
did you get into it?” He replies:
“It’s defi nitely more popular - I’ve
noticed it and it’s clear from the
enquiries I get. Boy bands and pop
stars like Justin Bieber are favouring
a more muscled look and it IS an
infl uence. When I was younger, being
skinny was the thing”.
So we asked John, given the trend to
be skinny when he was younger, what
made him get into bodybuilding.
“A friend called for me - I was only 16
and hadn’t seen him for weeks. I was
shocked - he looked good, his physique
had changed a lot. I went along to the
gym with him one day and was hooked.
The rest, as they say, is history!”
Indeed! John loved the gym so much
it became a second home – with him
training every day for 90 minutes at a
time and within 6 months, his physique
had changed considerably. After 12
months, the gym owners and customers
began encouraging him to compete,
so in 1980 John joined the English
Federation of Body Builders and
competed in his fi rst area competition –
leading to national level 3 years later.
We asked John what his parents
thought of his transformation...
“Mum wasn’t happy - mainly with my
dietary requirements and all the eggs I
was eating! Back then, any more than
2 eggs a day was supposedly bad for
you and I was eating 6 a day”.
We appreciate the effort that went into
training, but how did John go from
being a skinny 16 year old to competing
internationally in such a short time.
There must have been help - both
coaching and, let’s not avoid the issue,
steroids. So we asked John...
“Hard training. 6 days a week - twice a
day in the 3 months before competition.
It was gruelling and relentless workouts
John Fisher - British Champtionships
1886, aged 23
and I still train the same today!”
So you didn’t take steroids?
“Well, it was a problem for me because
it wasn’t something I wanted to do but
to compete at such a level - even more
so today - it is a necessity. However,
the use of steroids should be managed
wisely and I was very fortunate to
receive good advice and if there is one
thing I would advise anyone looking to
use steroids, it would be ‘less is more’.
I would say that drugs are only 5% of
building an amazing physique. It takes
3+ years to get a competitive physique
and too many young guys use a gym for
a few months and then take steroids,
not realising that the muscle you build
naturally, is yours to keep forever - with
work of course! Steroids are taken by
professionals to improve the fi nal look”.
What about coaching, you must have
had help in the beginning, surely?
“I learnt a lot from magazines and trying
different training techniques, which I
use today with clients and I was lucky
enough to encounter Albert Beckles
– famous professional bodybuilding
champion and current day judge, who
appeared in Pumping Iron with Arnold
Swarteznnegger. I trained with him
on-and-off for nearly 5 years, when he
lived near my home in Harrow and that
training was invaluable”.
Albert in fact invited John to train with
him in the States, so in 1984 John
headed out to San Fernando Valley
in California, where he trained with
Albert for 5 months before returning
to compete in his fi rst British Senior
Championship in 1985.
John stopped competing after the 1990
Mr Universe competition in Barcelona
but never ceased training and has
trained over 200 clients, from beginners
to competition level, with several
winning at regional and national level.
Jodie Marsh has had an awful lot of
fl ack in the past. What do you think of
her physical progress?
“I think she’s done really well
considering she’s spent a relatively
short time in the sport.”
Are you getting more enquiries from
women as a result?
“Yes. Not enough women use weights
when exercising. They just use cardio
equipment which makes them fi tter but
doesn’t change their tone or shape.
Also, if you don’t have good muscle
strength and tone, as you get older your
muscle withers and doesn’t support
your frame properly. Weight training
also increases bone density, which is
what you want as you get older.”
Surely some women are scared of
turning into massive freaks though?
“That would never happen and doesn’t
happen - unless they’re using steroids.
What women achieve with weight
training is a good, shapely physique.
Remember that bodybuilders have to
remove all body fat before a show to
display their muscle defi nition better. If
you were to look their bodies between
shows, they would look very different”.
But they don’t have to work out 90
minutes a day, 6 days a week, surely?
“To achieve and maintain a nice toned
shape, I would suggest 3 workout
sessions (1 hour each) a week
minimum. It’s a lifestyle choice, as with
any diet and exercise regime.
What advice would you give to our
young male and female readers who
might be considering bodybuilding?
“I wouldn’t advise any form of weight
training before the age of 16, as their
bones are still growing and haven’t
strengthened. For those over 16, I
would say defi nitely go for it because
it’s good hobby and healthy lifestyle”.
And what advice would you give
to those youngsters considering
competitive bodybuilding?”
“Anyone wanting to compete should
train 5 - 6 days a week for 90 minutes
a session, stick to a healthy diet and
anything is achievable”.
Why did the Guardian approach you?
“They wanted an older, experienced
bodybuilder/instructor and a younger
one to talk about its increased appeal
and what drives us to do it.”
So, what does drive you to do it?
“It’s just part of me and I can’t imagine
not doing it; I get a buzz from it, I feel
better and am in good shape.”
Would you compete again?
“Never say never but time is running out
for me. There are shows for 50+ year
olds and I’m always being encouraged
to consider it, but... “
So we may see you on stage again!?
“Never say never”.
‘Dunno’
‘Dunno’ is a novel by Peter Inson – an Estuary LIFE correspondent. A review of ‘Dunno’ follows and Peter is offering a signed
copy of the novel as a competition prize (see page 28).
‘Dunno’ Review - by Margaret Boreham, school librarian for 18 years - now retired
This is a story that takes place over several months in the life of a teenage
boy, Jon who lives in a world where security and love are absent. He has no
father fi gure and lives miserably with his totally inadequate mother.
He is a failure at school and unlikely to achieve at anything in life. He does
not seem to have any friends, spends a lot of time on the streets. He truants
from school regularly and gets involved in small time crime, bullying and
violence. Small wonder then that, when we meet him, Jon has become
what we recognize a disaffected teenager, a feral child. He fi nds it diffi cult
to trust anyone especially adults. People in authority give him grief. They
represent obstacles to be overcome making life and growing up well nigh
impossible. When asked if the thought of going to court bothered him he
replies:- “Dunno” Jon appreciated the word; it was always a good reliable
way of shutting the bastards up.
The subject matter of the book is tough, and it uses some equally tough
language that most of today’s teenagers will recognize, and as such, does
represent the all too real world of many vulnerable young people. There is
hope, however, as Jonathan learns to survive his diffi cult circumstances.
The fi rst adult that Jon meets he can trust in any way is Steve , a young
nurse at the hospital, who treats Jon’s injuries after an attack. Steve
succeeds where others have failed. As Jon explains:- The doctor’s
question’s were diffi cult ….. Steve’s questions were all right – you could say
what you really wanted.
Jon is encouraged to go to the pub for drink with Steve and his friends and
is encouraged to get a job that would help him escape his diffi cult life. Later
on he meets some older men, Paul and Jimmy, who are decent men that
accept Jon into their lives, encourage him and treat him with respect. Jon
learns to take the opportunities offered to him and begins to make some
changes in his life.
The story is told in such a way that while the reader has sympathy for Jon,
we can also empathize with the adults in the narrative, especially those who
try to help him. It enables adults to have a greater awareness of the inner
life of young people and exposes some of the ways we make life diffi cult
for them. At the same time Jon’s experience shows how young people can
learn to understand and relate to the adults around them and so make sense
of their lives. ‘Dunno’ is a story despite being hard hitting, offers a ray of
hope for those whose life seems hopeless. It does not deal in heroics but
ordinary everyday situations that have the power to redeem. The writing
style is fl uent and carries the storyline briskly along. Like the subject matter,
it is not condescending to young people and can or even should be read
equally by both adults and teenagers alike.
The author is a retired Head Teacher and it is evident that he draws
on his experience to present this story which is very true to life. It is a
straightforward narrative that will appeal to teenagers and adults alike. The
author exposes the communication gap between adults and young people
and how misunderstandings so often occur.
It also highlights how teenagers want to be treated and understood with
respect, and how adults perceive that
helping disaffected young people is
frustrating and problematic.
There is a stark realism and honesty
about ‘Dunno’ that has quite a hard
hitting impact which, I suspect,
many teenagers will recognize and
enjoy. It should be a compulsory
read for anyone employed in working
with young people whether they be
parents, teachers, youth workers,
probation offi cers or magistrates in
juvenile courts.
Forced Marriages and the
proposed change in the law
A forced marriage is not the same as an arranged marriage. In
an arranged marriage whilst the family take the lead in selecting
the partners, the couple have the free will and choice to accept or
decline the arrangement. A forced marriage is one where one (or
both) the parties are forced to enter into a marriage against their will.
FJG
Forced marriages are an abuse of human rights, a form of violence
against both men and women and, where it affects children, child abuse
and, where it affects those with disabilities, abuse of vulnerable people.
An estimated 8,000 young women each year are forced into marriage.
The pressure put on people to marry against their will can be physical,
emotional and psychological.
Under the Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act 2007, which came into
force in 2008, the Court can make an order for the purposes of protecting:-
(a) a person from being forced into a marriage or from any attempt to be
forced into a marriage; and
(b) a person who has already been forced into a marriage.
This Act applies where a person (A) is forced into a marriage if another
person (B) forces them into a marriage without full and free consent. It
does not matter whether the conduct of (B) which forces (A) to enter into
a marriage is directed against A, B or another person. A Forced Marriage
Protection Order (FMPO) can contact such prohibitions, requirements
and restrictions as the Court considers appropriate. By way of example, a
Court can make an order:-
Billericay I Central London I Chelmsford I Clacton I
Colchester
• to prevent a forced marriage from occurring;
• to hand over passports or travel documents;
• to stop someone from being taken abroad;
• to stop intimidation or violence;
• for the local authority where appropriate, the police and legal
representatives of the person to be protected to have access to that
person;
• for the return of the person to be protected;
• for the disclosure of whereabouts of a person
The Court Order can apply within the jurisdiction of England and Wales or
abroad, in certain circumstances. When making a FMPO the Court has to
consider various factors before making an order e.g. the need to secure
the health, safety and well being of the person to be protected.
The Court has to take into account a person’s wishes and feelings in light
of their age and understanding. Under the present law the Court must
attach a power of arrest to one or more of the provisions of the Order
unless it considers that in all the circumstances of the case that there is
adequate protection without such power. The breaching of a FMPC is
currently contempt of Court and punishable by up to two years in prison.
At the moment, forcing someone to marry is not a criminal offence but
under the Government’s recently announced proposals this will change
and it will be a criminal offence to force someone to marry. This will then
mean that a person guilty of the offence of forcing another person to marry
will be tried through the criminal Courts and, if convicted of the offence,
will have a criminal record and could face a period of imprisonment.
There is concern amongst lawyers practising in this fi eld that the change in
the law will mean that fewer people will be willing to apply for the FMPO as
potentially this could mean that their parent or other relative could be sent
to prison and have a criminal record for forcing a marriage to occur.
The fi rst 6 sailing dates have nearly
sold out - we only have 9 spaces left.
With the interest and enquiries to date,
I don’t think it will be long before we
have completely sold out so if you’re
thinking about it, you need to be quick!
In addition to the sailing dates we have
sold 2 days of private charters. The
tickets are £85 per person for the day
including a seafood lunch sponsored by
Sal and Chris of Mersea Oyster Bar.
Tickets are available from Marfl eets in
the High St, West Mersea. On sail day
we meet at the end of the jetty where
the launch Lady Grace will pick you
up and take you out to Dawn. It will
also come and collect you later in the
afternoon when the trip has fi nished.
With the dreadful weather over the past
weeks, it has been challenging trying to
do the fi t out jobs on Dawn to prepare
her for her fi rst sailing voyage. With the
support of a team of up to 10 members
of the Trust and all the Friends of Dawn,
the painting and varnishing work was
completed just in time to bend on all
the sales. In fact the large head sail
was hanked on by me and one other
hanging on to the fore stay, whilst
balancing on the winch struts in 20mph
plus wind strength!! We eventually
succeeded, not bad for a couple of guys
well the wrong side of 50. Unlike the
previous day, the weather was kind to
us when we had our fi rst charter sail on
17th June. The graceful old lady pushed
herself slowly out of her mud berth
where she has been resting for the
winter months. The sun broke through
the clouds on a typical Essex day out
on the water: perfect!
We motored towards Osea Island
then turned towards Brightlingsea
where Dawn could have her sails set
for a gentle cruise. Guests enjoyed
a seafood lunch as they watched
the landscape changing. Gerard, the
skipper, allowed guests to take the
helm with the sails set. The men all
showed willing to try their hand at
steering 60 tons of barge under sail,
not quite as easy as it may look and of
course, no brakes! They all enjoyed
the experience and we returned to
Mersea later in the afternoon. We later
received a very nice letter from one
of our fi rst guests, thanking us for a
wonderful day out and mentioned we
are lucky to have such an experienced
skipper as Gerard Swift.
it’s worth a watch. Griff sailed at West
Mersea in the 1960’s when his father
had a boat. He actually commented
during the programme how wonderful it
was to see West Mersea and how little it
has changed over the years.
With more people on the Island and
further afi eld, looking to help or join The
Dawn Sailing Barge Trust, contact can
be made via our membership secretary,
Dave Haslam. His email address is
healeydriverdave@gmail.com and
telephone number is 01206385273.
The Trust would like to help educate our
young citizens by offering guided tours
when Dawn is back in her mud berth.
We can show groups of youngsters how
goods were carried at sea years ago
and explain a little history of the barge.
With Health and Safety regulations,
we can only invite youngsters who are
fully supervised with qualifi ed teachers
and group leaders who will have the
necessary responsibility for all the
HSE compliance to allow accompanied
children on board. The Trust is not able
to take responsibility for youngster’s
actions whilst on board. Any group that
would like to visit the barge, please
write to Marfl eets (Dawn Barge), 49
High St, West Mersea, Colchester, C05
suitable times, subject to conditions.
It was good to see the Griff Rhys Jones
on the BBC 1 documentary, The Lost
Routes of Britain, which was transmitted
on 7th and 10th June. Most people
I have spoken to thought it was very
informative. I believe it is available on
BBC i player for those that missed it and
On behalf of the Trust, we would like
to thank all the people who sponsored
the ‘£10 light bulb’ appeal. We did light
up the Dawn over the Jubilee period
and we intend to do the same over the
Regatta night.
