Three Students Chosen
for Fulbright, Gilman Scholar International Travel Experiences
Nelson
West Virginia Wesleyan College
strives to ensure that graduates are exposed
to global experiences during their
time here. Three Wesleyan students
have been selected to partake in international
travel experiences this summer.
Wesleyan sophomore Jessica Nelson,
an English writing major from Morgantown,
WV, has received a place on a Fulbright Summer
Institute to study at King’s College in London, one of
the most prestigious and selective summer scholarship
programs operating world-wide.
At the King’s College London Summer Institute, Nelson
will be participating in the course module “Wonderland:
100 Years of Children’s Literature.” Participants
will study the works of such authors as J.K. Rowling,
J.M. Barrie, J.R.R. Tolkien, Roald Dahl, and Rudyard
Kipling, and create their own work of children’s literature.
Outside the classroom, she
and other participants will explore the
grand city of London, learning about
the city itself and British culture.
John Bair, a junior double major in
music and applied physics from Shady
Spring, WV, and Taylor Germain, a ju-
Bair
nior English literature major and philosophy, psychology,
and Honors minor from Deep Creek,
MD, will be studying abroad through
the Benjamin A. Gilman International
Scholarship program. Bair will be
studying Buddhism in Chaing Mai,
Tailand for five weeks. While overseas,
he will also travel around Chiang Mai
and take advantage of its surrounding
natural attractions.
Germain
Germain will be studying in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
for eight weeks. She will be taking classes and serving
at an orphanage. Germain will also be taking advantage
of the safari excursions, archaeological landmarks,
and the opportunity to observe primates.
“The Wesleyan faculty believe that it is imperative
for students to develop a global perspective,” stated Dr.
Boyd Creasman, dean of the College and vice president
for academic affairs. “Of course, one way to foster that
is through international travel. St. Augustine said, ‘The
world is a book, and those who do not travel read only
a page.’ By taking part in international travel, our students
impress us with their desire to ‘read more of the
book’ by engaging with the world.”
Congratulations Coach Warner and the Lady Bobcats!
Congratulations to the Lady Bobcat softball team, as
they went 38-10 during the regular season. The team
advanced to the NCAA Division II Super Regionals
this year and hosted the NCAA Division II Atlantic 2
Regional. This is the first time Wesleyan has hosted a
NCAA softball tournament, and it is the first time one
has been held in West Virginia.
Sophomore Brooklyn Waddell of Buckhannon
was named an AFCA First Team All-American. Wesleyan
swept the Mountain East Conference awards
with Coach Warner being named Coach of the Year,
Waddell as Player of the Year, Hannah Vet of Bonita
Springs, FL as Pitcher of the Year, and Krista Waggoner
of Oklahoma City, OK as Freshman of the Year.

Armistead ’81 to Lead Wesleyan Alumni Relations
William B. Armistead ’81 has been appointed as Associate Vice President of Advancement and Alumni
Relations. The Morgantown native brings over 30 years of higher education experience to his new position.
Since 2012, he has served as the President of the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc., where he led efforts to
grow the institution’s endowment to provide funding for student scholarship, faculty enhancements, and facility
improvements.
Armistead began his career at Wesleyan in 1982 as an admissions counselor before moving to West Virginia
University’s Admissions and Records Office. In 1988, he became the Associate Director of the West Virginia
University Alumni Association and was promoted to Associate Executive Director in 1997, which led to him serving as Director
of Athletic Development for the Mountaineer Athletic Club from 2000 to 2003.
Armistead enjoyed a three-year stint in banking and returned to higher education advancement in 2006 as Director of Development
for the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, part of the WVU Foundation, a position he held for six years before
leading the Fairmont State Foundation.
“We are delighted that Will is returning to Wesleyan to lead our Alumni Relations office and work with major donors to the
College,” said President Pamela Balch ’71. “Will brings a vast amount of experience and expertise and is an individual who
is well known in West Virginia as well as by many of our alumni across the country. He will be a great addition to our team.”
His spouse, Julie Rosenwald Armistead, is also a 1982 West Virginia Wesleyan College graduate. The couple are the
parents of two adult children. Armistead began his duties at the College on June 1.
Kristi Lawrence Wilkerson ’99, Director of Alumni Relations 2008 – 2015, is now the Director of Educational Ministries
at First United Methodist Church, Buckhannon.
Annie Merner Pfeiffer Library
Serves Vital Role in Community
The Annie Merner Pfeiffer
(AMP) Library at Wesleyan
continues to expand its
offerings for the Wesleyan
community during 2015.
Members of the Buckhannon
community have full-time access to the resources while
visiting the library. Library cards are sold at $10 a year,
and free for clergy, educators, and alumni.
“We want the community to take advantage of the offerings
here at the library,” stated librarian Beth Rogers.
The AMP Library has seen the exciting edition of
two new programs. Mango languages allows students
the opportunity to learn and study from a selection of
64 languages. The program is not only useful for English-speaking
students, but also for students learning
English as a second language.
Another exciting addition to the database offered
by the library is the Terrorism Research & Analysis
Consortium, a digital intelligence repository of research
and analysis covering global terrorism, counterterrorism,
and political violence.
“Compared to other schools our size, the offerings
and resources to which students have access is quite
impressive,” said Rogers.
Christopher Scott Named Chaplain and
Director of Religious and Spiritual Life
Beginning July 6, Christopher Scott
will begin his duties as Chaplain and
Director of Religious and Spritual
Life at Wesleyan. Working alongside
the Office of Admissions to cultivate
prospective United Methodist Students,
Scott will be responsible for
developing a variety of religious programs for campus
while creating transformative leaders in the process.
Scott served the Levelton Charge UMC in Hillsboro
and the Meadow River UMC in Rainelle. He
served as a student pastor in St. Louis, MO while
attending Eden Theological Seminary, developing
service projects and opportunities for spiritual reflection
for teens and leading devotional activitites and
leadership trainings for young adults.
“I have always had a strong passion for Christian
education and faith formation in teens and young
adults,” stated Scott. “I am committed to West Virginia
and its future.”
This June at the WV Annual Conference, Angela Gay
Kinkead ’79, Dean of the Chapel 2001 - 2015, is to receive
Q&A
with John Waltz ’01,
Vice President of
Enrollment Mangement
Q: What role can alumni play in the student recruitment
process?
A: Alumni provide one of the most valuable assets in recruitment
as alumni referrals are one of the highest yielding
types on student inquiries. When a student has applied from
a distant state or region, it is often the case of having a Wesleyan
graduate as a neighbor, teacher, or coach. We always
fulfill these requests quickly and in a personal manner to
reaffirm Wesleyan’s personal touch. Even things as simple
as displaying Wesleyan memorabilia in your workplace can
spark a discussion about what a tremendous place this is.
Q: How has the admission funnel/recruitment process
changed over the last 5 or so years?
A: Certainly the idea of “stealth” applicants or shoppers has
impacted the funnel. This is to say that previously a student
would ask for more information or meet a Wesleyan representative
at a high school or college program (inquire), then
apply. While many students go through that process traditionally,
more than ever students are applying directly outside
of the traditional funnel. This might be done by doing internet
research, visiting campus with no previous information,
or for no particular reason at all. Student inquiry habits model
retail shopping habits more and more. It’s all about exploration
and intuition.
Q: What is the value of the campus visit?
A: The campus visit plays directly into the idea of these
stealth applicants. Many students visit campus with no previous
interaction with the college. Some visit once only
in an exploratory manner, and others come back 4-5 times.
We try to treat each visit, whether a sophomore or a senior,
as that student’s chance to fall in love with the campus.
Tours are carefully mapped and guides are specially trained
in greater detail than before. Schedules are tailored to the
needs to students as each purpose for a visit can be different.
Once again, it’s about instilling emotion to that experience.
They do this a lot of places, so this one has to be memorable!
Q: What types of strategies do we use to secure enrollment
goals/recruit students each year?
A: Strategies are comprehensive, from communication sequences
(letters, e-mails, brochures) for sophomores-seniors,
search strategy, website outreach, social media, and so many
other ways to reach students. We travel regionally to WV,
PA, MD, VA, DC, NJ and to other states doing high school
visits, college fairs, workshops, application nights, and yield
events. We hold 5-7 weekend event days, averaging 100
students per event, and hold daily visits throughout the year.
We also utilize partnerships with other departments to recruit
students including athletics, the Learning Center, performing
arts, The Center for Community Engagement & Leadership
Development, faculty outreach, and much more. Enrollment
is truly a campus-wide initiative at WVWC!
Q: What do you believe to be the most integral part
of the recruitment process?
A: The most integral part of recruitment is putting the students
first in all that we do. I am fortunate to work in Admissions
with a team of colleagues who are creative, driven, intelligent,
and forward-thinking. Their greatest quality, however, is putting
students and their families above all else. We believe that
if we do that in the midst of all of these other initiatives, that
we will continue to thrive in a tough educational environment.
ARE YOU IN THE GAME?
Each year, one-third, or 33%, of all Emeritus Club members make a gift to Wesleyan. Thanks to your
support, we ranked first in the state among all colleges and universities in alumni participation.
Help us repeat as Champions!
A gift of any size makes a difference.
If you have not made a donation to the College since July 1, 2014, please join the team and make a
gift before June 30.
Lillian F. Alfred ’56 of Charleston reconnected with
a Wesleyan friend, Margaret Saeler Burkett ’56 of
Frederick, MD who is a new member of the Emeritus
Club. They are both from Jane Lew.
Robert C. Cole ’61 of Buckhannon, began Volunteer
in Mission Work
Teams in 1985, The Caribbean
Crescent Work
Teams and then later with
WV Volunteer in Mission
Work Teams. Since then
he has worked in Mexico,
Costa Rica, Honduras,
Argentina, Guatemala, El
Salvador, and a peace and
study mission to Nicaragua
in 1987. Those years include 14 teams to Mexico
and 12 to Guatemala. In 30 years, he has worked on
parsonages, churches, medical clinics, orphanages,
schools, and homes. He is to return to El Salvador in
July 2015, for his 33rd work team to Latin America
with the WV Volunteer in Missions. In September
2015, he will celebrate his 81st birthday.
Charles E. Law ’66 of St. Pete Beach, FL, gave to
Wesleyan’s archivist his Mother’s copy of the Murmurmontis
for the year 1934 and the small leather bound
commencement week activities schedule for commencement
held on Sunday, May 31, 1936. Charles
wrote, “Margaret Ruth Freeman, and my father
James P. Law, were both 1936 graduates and were
forever very proud of it, as they always were of their
college. The Law and Freeman Endowed Scholarship
has been in place since the mid-1980s and hopefully
will be a continuous reminder and legacy of two
wonderful families and the love and devotion my parents
had for their alma mater. Paul, my Father’s brother,
also graduated from the College in 1938, and died
in a car accident in 1939. One of my brothers, David
H. Law ’62 (deceased 1998) attended WVWC for one
year before transferring to WVU for pharmacy school.
My family and I believe these items are now better
served in the hands of WVWC for the historical benefit,
tradition, and personal perspective they represent. I
feel certain they will be tenderly maintained.” Charles
graduated 30 years after his parents and is retired from
the U.S. Treasury Department.
News About You
Over the past several years, Cinda Frenzel O’Neill ’70
of Hedgesville has
shared many Wesleyan
items of interest
from her father,
August Richmond
Frenzel ’39, with
the Emeritus Club
to be shared with
the Archives in the
Annie Merner Pfeiffer
Library. Cinda
visited on campus
in early May
and brought more
memorabilia. She
is pictured with a May 19, 1953 copy of the local
newspaper headline “Wesleyan Completes $1 Million
Building Program” and “New Library Dedication To
Be May 27.”
Clinton D. “Pat” Spiegel ’54 of Elizabethtown, PA
wrote: “In 1983, I drove an older brother from his home
outside Philadelphia to his new home at the Mason Village
in Elizabethtown, PA. Most of my professional
life was spent working at colleges and universities and
I lived on campus for over 10 years at my last assignment.
I was familiar with campuses and this was one of
the nicest. Rather than students with backpacks, there
were older people with walkers. I was won over as was
a sister and brother-in-law who moved in a few years
later. I still ski, ride bikes and travel, but I had grown
tired of being a landlord, dealing with an old building
and just being responsible for things like frozen pipes,
etc. I decided it was time to downsize. On September
5, 2014, I moved into a one-bedroom apartment which
I had ‘purchased’ and which I now call home. I am enjoying
my concerts, trips, seven miles of walking paths,
and two mile bike rides to Elizabethtown College to be
reminded that there still are young people in the world.”
Bert Waddell ’61 of Buckhannon is the grandfather
of Wesleyan sophomore softball player, Brooklyn
Waddell, the Player of the Year in the Mountain
East Conference. She was among the NCAA leaders
in batting average (.483) and was selected on the
2015 Division II All American First Team.

In Memoriam - Members of the Emeritus Club
Martha (Marty) Hall Broadhead, 84, of Reno, NV, died at home on December 11, 2014 surrounded by her
family. She was born September 14, 1930 in Weston to Blonda and Lucy Hall. Although she lived the majority of
her life far away from her childhood home, traveled the world and had a great appreciation of the arts and culture,
Marty remained attached to her rural home. Graduating from WV Wesleyan College in 1952, she took a job in
Washington DC with the FBI. There, on a blind date in September of 1953, she met Ken Broadhead, a native of
San Francisco, CA. Despite their coastal contrasts, their courtship would lead to nearly 60 years of marriage. They
moved to the desert of Reno where Ken began his career with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. She volunteered with the
