Exploring Hopes & Aspirati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Visi<strong>on</strong> Statement<br />

St Mary Redcliffe is steeped in history and <strong>the</strong> people are rightly proud of that heritage<br />

but <strong>the</strong>y are equally clear about where <strong>the</strong>y’re going. People blossom in fr<strong>on</strong>t of you<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y talk about <strong>the</strong>ir faith, and are passi<strong>on</strong>ate about <strong>the</strong> networks of groups<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are involved with far bey<strong>on</strong>d <strong>the</strong> <strong>church</strong>. The <strong>church</strong> is focussed <strong>on</strong> things that<br />

really matter, <strong>on</strong> issues that affect <strong>the</strong> poor and marginalised, whilst those things that<br />

often clamour for attenti<strong>on</strong> are given <strong>the</strong>ir proper place am<strong>on</strong>gst competing priorities.<br />

There is a real sense of working toge<strong>the</strong>r towards a clear goal am<strong>on</strong>gst <strong>the</strong> different<br />

elements of a complex <strong>church</strong>. More than that, <strong>the</strong> <strong>church</strong> is actively seeking out and<br />

working with o<strong>the</strong>r faith and community groups to tackle all kinds of social, ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

and envir<strong>on</strong>mental problems, some around <strong>the</strong> corner and o<strong>the</strong>rs around <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s are growing in number and in commitment to <strong>the</strong> purpose of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>church</strong>, and it is evident that individuals and groups way bey<strong>on</strong>d <strong>the</strong> bounds of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>church</strong> understand why St Mary Redcliffe exists, what it stands for and are grateful for<br />

its positive impact up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lives.<br />

reports have led us to this moment<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Developing</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ideas<br />

fulfil our calling to be and to do<br />

Once in a lifetime opportunity

St Mary Redcliffe Development<br />

What<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Developing</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ideas

Our first thoughts were to build everything <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> north side of <strong>the</strong> <strong>church</strong>

But some<strong>on</strong>e <strong>the</strong>n suggested regaining <strong>the</strong> sense of ‘place’ outside <strong>the</strong> west door

The chapel may have g<strong>on</strong>e, but <strong>the</strong> tree creates a boundary to <strong>the</strong> south

We would need to remove <strong>the</strong> railings to open up <strong>the</strong> area through to <strong>the</strong> balustrade

We could <strong>the</strong>n reinstate <strong>the</strong> ancient Grand Staircase

Dropping <strong>the</strong> street level to <strong>the</strong> same as outside <strong>the</strong> Undercroft, thus opening up <strong>the</strong> vista<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>church</strong> from this positi<strong>on</strong>

And possibly re-establishing <strong>the</strong> entry point <strong>on</strong>to <strong>church</strong> land from Redcliffe Way

Then some<strong>on</strong>e raised <strong>the</strong> South Churchyard: <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> greenest spaces in Redcliffe and<br />

very busy whenever <strong>the</strong> sun shines

But with some seriously underused parts

And with <strong>the</strong> potential to create new pathways <strong>on</strong>to Pump Lane

And / Or through <strong>the</strong> Processi<strong>on</strong>al Way

Giving access to and from <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly o<strong>the</strong>r above ground heritage asset: Chattert<strong>on</strong>’s House

The bushes in <strong>the</strong> south <strong>church</strong>yard do take up a huge amount of space which used to be<br />

built up ... clergy housing used to be here, apparently!

And things that ought to be better looked after are ‘stored’ here

This area could be put to far better use

And it would be good to have a better view <strong>on</strong> our way out, as well!

Just over <strong>the</strong> way is <strong>the</strong> Church Centre 1960/70s building which is <strong>on</strong> a huge piece of land

So we are w<strong>on</strong>dering if our <strong>development</strong> could be spread out over <strong>the</strong> two sites to help<br />

bring <strong>the</strong> whole thing closer, thus help heal <strong>the</strong> divide between north and south

St Mary Redcliffe Development<br />

What<br />

new buildings, or additi<strong>on</strong>s to current<br />

buildings, that will enable us to address <strong>the</strong><br />

needs we have identified<br />

within <strong>the</strong> boundaries of <strong>the</strong> <strong>church</strong> site (and<br />

possibly event a little outside of it), and<br />

within <strong>the</strong> boundaries of <strong>the</strong> site of <strong>the</strong><br />
