Vision Statement
St Mary Redcliffe is steeped in history and the people are rightly proud of that heritage
but they are equally clear about where they’re going. People blossom in front of you
when they talk about their faith, and are passionate about the networks of groups
they are involved with far beyond the church. The church is focussed on things that
really matter, on issues that affect the poor and marginalised, whilst those things that
often clamour for attention are given their proper place amongst competing priorities.
There is a real sense of working together towards a clear goal amongst the different
elements of a complex church. More than that, the church is actively seeking out and
working with other faith and community groups to tackle all kinds of social, economic
and environmental problems, some around the corner and others around the world.
Congregations are growing in number and in commitment to the purpose of the
church, and it is evident that individuals and groups way beyond the bounds of the
church understand why St Mary Redcliffe exists, what it stands for and are grateful for
its positive impact upon their lives.

Our first thoughts were to build everything on the north side of the church

But someone then suggested regaining the sense of ‘place’ outside the west door

The chapel may have gone, but the tree creates a boundary to the south

We would need to remove the railings to open up the area through to the balustrade

We could then reinstate the ancient Grand Staircase

Dropping the street level to the same as outside the Undercroft, thus opening up the vista
of the church from this position

And possibly re-establishing the entry point onto church land from Redcliffe Way

Then someone raised the South Churchyard: one of the greenest spaces in Redcliffe and
very busy whenever the sun shines

But with some seriously underused parts

And with the potential to create new pathways onto Pump Lane

And / Or through the Processional Way

Giving access to and from the only other above ground heritage asset: Chatterton’s House

The bushes in the south churchyard do take up a huge amount of space which used to be
built up ... clergy housing used to be here, apparently!

And things that ought to be better looked after are ‘stored’ here

This area could be put to far better use

And it would be good to have a better view on our way out, as well!

Just over the way is the Church Centre 1960/70s building which is on a huge piece of land

So we are wondering if our development could be spread out over the two sites to help
bring the whole thing closer, thus help heal the divide between north and south
