2011
Winning art
by children from
around the world
Since 1991, Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures ® has reached over 500 million children worldwide.
Welcome to the World of Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures ® . . .
Over Years
of Oral Health Education
for Children!
The award-winning Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures ® global oral health education program continues to spread smiles to children everywhere. Each
year, Bright Smiles, Bright Futures TM (BSBF) reaches over 50 million children and their families in 30 languages and 80 countries throughout the world!
From the tiniest community to the
most populated urban center, BSBF
inspires kids to take control of their
own oral health. Using Dr. Rabbit
and Dr. Brushwell — the engaging
cartoon dentists — as its mascots,
the program speaks out to children in
ways that intrigue and inspire them.
The BSBF Philosophy
Bright Smiles, Bright Futures TM is a comprehensive classroom program — but it’s a philosophy,
too. It’s all about giving teachers, children, and families the tools they need to make good
oral health a permanent part of their lives. With its focus on prevention, the program builds
self-esteem and teaches good oral health practices that help children’s smiles last a lifetime.
Making it Easy to Teach Oral Health!
With BSBF, oral health becomes part of the everyday classroom environment! For teachers
today, the greatest challenge is having time to fit in everything they need to teach. BSBF
fits into the existing curriculum, providing quality classroom materials and activities that
can be used to teach the required classroom subjects — like language arts, science, social
studies, and math.
High-quality Materials = Memorable Learnings
The BSBF program was developed with an International Advisory Board of educational, dental,
and multicultural experts, and tested with children and teachers in real classrooms. Since its
inception in the U.S., BSBF has worked side-by-side with the Head Start Bureau, Maternal and
Child Health, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide materials
appropriate for younger children.
Over the years, BSBF has included a variety of classroom components and is continually
updated to engage and excite both teachers and children. The videos in the program have
received the prestigious “Silver Screen Award” from the U.S. International Film & Video
Festival, and the kits have been recognized as a tool for outstanding achievement in social
commitment by the Globals Healthcare Communications Competition.
It’s All About Bright Smiles!
Above all, the crowning achievement of BSBF truly lies in the faces of the smiling children who
participate in this confidence-building program, year after year. Children discover that they can
take control of their own oral health — which is what BSBF is all about.
DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Bright Smiles, Bright Futures TM : A Partnership Approach
Colgate recognizes that fostering partnerships between governments, health and educational organizations, professional associations, and
health care providers strengthens the impact of the BSBF initiative around the world.
In the Global Community
Reaching children with a message of prevention, Bright Smiles, Bright Futures TM extends
far and wide. Here’s how…
Australia and New Zealand: Launched in 1997, BSBF is endorsed by the Australian
Dental Association, New Zealand Dental Association among others. Colgate provides
BSBF training to dental professionals working with children and teachers. The program has
reached over 5 million children since the launch.
China: In the last 15 years, 111 million children have been reached. BSBF is endorsed by
the Chinese Stomatology Association (CSA) and the Ministry of Education. Each year, China
BSBF reaches over 440 cities and teaches oral health care habits to over 7 million first graders in more than 40,000 schools.
Costa Rica: Since the BSBF curriculum launched 18 years ago, nearly 2 million 6- to 9-year-olds have benefited from
the program. The initiative includes the support of the profession, and is endorsed by 5 entities including the
Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. It reaches 72% of all 9 year-olds in public schools.
India: Endorsed by the Indian Dental Association, the program reaches
12 million children each year. In the past 34 years, the Colgate program in India
has reached over 90 million children aged 5 to 12 years.
Italy: Endorsed by the Associazione Dentisti Italiani (ADI), the BSBF program
reaches children throughout the country and continues to teach children how
to practice healthy oral care habits.
Malaysia: Today, the program – known locally as Senyuman Ceria, Masa Depan
Gemilang – reaches 7,700 schools and 650,000 children. The program’s success
is made possible with the support of the Ministry of Education and the
India
Ministry of Health.
Pakistan: Since its launch 13 years ago, the program has reached over 4.8 million primary school children. In 2002,
an initiative was undertaken to expand this oral health education platform to remote areas of Pakistan. Lack of electricity
in these areas is no obstacle to spreading the BSBF message, where flip charts and other print materials are used. In 2010,
the Global Art Contest received a record-breaking number of entries, exceeding 37,000 artworks from across the country!
Philippines: Launched 13 years ago, BSBF has reached over 15 million children since its inception, and today teaches
healthy oral care habits to over 2 million children each year.
Singapore: The BSBF program has reached almost 190,000 children since its launch 4 years ago. This initiative is
supported by the Health Promotion Board.
Thailand: In the last 13 years, over 9 million children have benefited from the BSBF program, which is endorsed by
the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Dental Department Bangkok Metropolitan Administration,
among others.
United States of America: Since its launch in 1991, the BSBF program has been used annually in 100,000 elementary
school classrooms across the U.S. Over 3.5 million children and their families receive the BSBF oral health messages each
year and continues to teach nearly 700,000 children about oral health every year.
In the Schools
Developed with an International
Advisory Board of educational, dental,
and cultural experts, the award-winning
school program is a cornerstone of BSBF.
Designed for children ages 5 - 10,
materials range from flip charts to
videos, storybooks and posters. In
this way, limited technology is not an
obstacle to spreading the BSBF message.
In the Dental Office
Providing outreach materials during
the dental visit is another facet of
Colgate’s global commitment. To
enhance the critical role of dental
professionals in influencing positive oral
health behaviors among children and
families, Colgate created a Professional
Resource Guide to help these
professionals use the BSBF materials in
the dental office and other settings.
My Bright Smile Art Contest
For the past 14 years, the My Bright Smile
Global Art Contest has invited children
from classrooms all over the world to
create artwork that shows what their own
bright smiles mean to them. Country
winners receive scholarships for themselves
and for their schools. This year’s calendar
features winners from Australia, China,
Costa Rica, India, Italy, Malaysia, Pakistan,
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and the
United States of America.
Karachi is a city of lights. It’s very
I speak Urdu and English, and my
favorite subjects at school are math,
English, art and music. I like to
Guangzhou has a population of
about ten million people. The most
beautiful place in my neighborhood
is the Pearl River. It looks especially
nice at night with the lights flashing
on the banks. I speak Cantonese and
Mandarin, and I’m learning English.
In my spare time, I watch TV, play
cards and draw. My favorite game is
hide-and-seek. My favorite subject is
art. And my favorite holiday is
International Children’s Day, because
we go to the amusement park on
that day.
One of the things I like best about
China is that people respect the old
and love the young.
A world of healthy teeth is a world full of bright smiles!
What other places in the world would you like to visit?
Ask your dental professional about sealants. Sealants are a thin protective
covering for your permanent molars. They prevent food from getting stuck
in the pits and grooves of your back teeth!
Bangkok is a warm place with lots
of buildings, shopping centers, and
cars. The most beautiful spot is the
Grand Palace. I live in a flat near
the market. We speak Thai at
home, and I’m also learning
English.
After school, I usually study arts
at the Thai-Japan Youth Center. At
home, I play jump rope and hula
hoop with my friends. When I
grow up, I want to be a doctor
because I love to help people.
One special thing about my
country is that Thai people love to
smile. That’s why it’s called “The
Land of Smiles.“
My home is the Philippines,
known as the Pearl of the Orient.
Filipinos are famous for being
resilient. We always look at the
brighter side of life and face our
problems with a big smile.
My family lives in an apartment.
We speak mostly Tagalog, but I’m
also learning English. In my free
time, I sketch and play chess and
computer games. I would like to be
a doctor, an artist or an architect
when I grow up.
If I could visit another country, I
would go to Haiti because I want to
help them, and I’d also like to
experience their culture.
