Industrial Engineering faculty and students visit
SIEMENS and Abu Dhabi Ship Building
In order to introduce students to the real-world
applications of industrial engineering, the
department of industrial engineering at ALHOSN
University has recently organized two field trips
to local leading industries, namely SIEMENS
Transformers LLC and Abu Dhabi Ship Building, both
located in Abu Dhabi’s Mussafah area.
During the visit to SIEMENS, faculty and students
met with Engineer Khurram Saleem, Chief Operating
Officer, Mr. Steve Jones, production manager,
and Engineer Sandeep S. Chaudhair, deputy line
manager. After listening to a brief introduction
about SIEMENS’ mission, vision, and values, the
group toured the facility to become familiarized
with SIEMENS production system. Students saw
firsthand the dynamic interaction between several
production departments, such as quality, inventory,
sales, and assembly to produce a finished product.
The second field trip was to Abu Dhabi Ship
Building (ADSB). Engineer Mohammad Jumaa
Al Saadi, Training and Development Manager,
welcomed the IE group and gave an informative
presentation about ADSB’s history, mission, vision,
core values, and structure. Subsequently, the group
toured ADSB departments to be informed about the
industrial and manufacturing processes involved in
building and repairing ships. This experience seems
to be very valuable to IE students since ship building
industry incorporates many aspects of Industrial
Engineering. ■
Architecture students develop projects for campus
improvements
18
Architectural Engineering students have
developed design proposals to improve
AHU campus. Students worked over the fall
term of 2010 to craft urban and landscape design
ideas for both male and female campuses and
the areas in-between. The projects represent the
major part of the Urban Design Studio taught by
Dr. Mohamad Kashef, Chair of the Architectural
Engineering Department. The Urban Design Studio
allows students to examine large-scale urban
developments, pedestrian movement patterns, and
visual elements of public squares. Students created
very interesting designs for sitting areas, fountains,
shading structures and amphitheaters as well as
landscape and trees to enhance the character of
campus outdoor spaces. One of the most significant
aspects of this exercise was giving students the
opportunity to improve their own campus and think
about practical issues related to their study in the
current university campus. The students shared
their ideas with Vice Chancellor, Abdul Rahim
Sabouni on Sunday, December 11, 2010. Professor
Sabouni discussed some specific design proposals
with the design teams and was pleased to find that
Architectural Engineering students are engaged
in real-world design exercise. One important
byproduct of the project was the enhancement of
team-work skills among students, who worked in
groups to realize their ideas in the final project. ■
