Patient educati<strong>on</strong> in atopic dermatitis<br />

Educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> patients with atopic dermatitis is an essential and unavoidable comp<strong>on</strong>ent <strong>of</strong><br />

management. 1 Where <strong>the</strong> disease involves young children, educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> parents is<br />

mandatory. Without adequate attenti<strong>on</strong> to educati<strong>on</strong>, all <strong>the</strong>rapies are futile and <strong>the</strong> patient is<br />

doomed to an impaired quality <strong>of</strong> life. Practiti<strong>on</strong>ers treating individuals with atopic dermatitis<br />

must be aware that <strong>the</strong> disease is <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most important medical c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s to affect<br />

quality <strong>of</strong> life. 2 Quality <strong>of</strong> life impairment usually involves <strong>the</strong> entire family. 3 Whilst much <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> educati<strong>on</strong>al principles centre <strong>on</strong> an adequate explanati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rapies and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

appropriate applicati<strong>on</strong> and timing, <strong>the</strong>re are a number <strong>of</strong> messages that must be menti<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

independently. 4<br />

These include:<br />

An explanati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease process, its aetiology and its pathology.<br />

Avoidance <strong>of</strong> generic (cigarette smoke, irritants) and individual specific (allergens)<br />

trigger factors.<br />

Attenti<strong>on</strong> to skin hygiene and care.<br />

Attenti<strong>on</strong> to itch preventi<strong>on</strong> (avoiding hot bedrooms, cutting <strong>of</strong> nails, avoidance <strong>of</strong><br />

woollen and o<strong>the</strong>r rough, scratchy clothing, avoidance <strong>of</strong> overdressing, avoidance <strong>of</strong><br />

soaps and adequate moisturisati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

An explanati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chr<strong>on</strong>ic and relapsing nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease.<br />

An explanati<strong>on</strong> that all <strong>the</strong>rapies are able <strong>on</strong>ly to treat <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> but not cure it.<br />

A discussi<strong>on</strong> about <strong>the</strong> scientific basis <strong>of</strong> alternative <strong>the</strong>rapies (homeopathy,<br />

reflexology, naturopathy, acupuncture and herbal <strong>the</strong>rapy). Such discussi<strong>on</strong> should
