WEEKLY MEDITATION for the Feast of the Lateran Basilica in Rome
When we hear about Jesus driving
the merchants out of the Temple, it
might seem as if Jesus is using domination
to chastise the misuse of the
Temple. But Jesus is the model of
mercy and understanding. Even
though he denounced the faults of the
Pharisees in vigorous terms, he never
headed a political movement, or began
a religious revolt by means of
domination.
He had better things to do. He
came to transform the whole
universe simultaneously in order
to lead it into the kingdom
of his Father. That is something
very different!
The merchants in the Temple
and the people served by them
were acting in good conscience,
so they were shocked at Jesus’
reaction. They questioned his right to
do what he did and asked for some
sign to prove the divine origin of his
mission. Jesus
gave them a sign
that was incomprehensible
to
them: he would
rise from the
dead three days
after being put to
death. Everything
would be turned upside down, but it
was exactly what was predicted, and
awaited over the centuries.
WISDOM’S CORNER
Side by side
Sandar Singh and a companion were traveling
through a pass high in the mountains
when the two came across a body lying in
the snow. They discovered the man to be
just barely alive. Sandar prepared to help
this unfortunate traveler, but his companion
objected, saying, “We shall lose our lives
if we burden ourselves with this man.” Sandar
would not think of leaving the man to
die, but his companion quickly bade him
farewell and walked on alone, leaving Sandar
to help the unfortunate traveler.
With great exertion Sandar carried the man
onward. As he walked, the heat cast off by
his body began to warm the frozen man. He
slowly revived and soon both men were
walking together, each holding the other up
and providing heat for one other.
Before long they came upon yet another
traveler’s body lying in the snow. The man
had frozen to death. He was the companion
who left Sandar alone to help the unfortunate
traveler.

New and fresh...
At the Marian conference about which I wrote last
week, there were a great number of young people.
People who were seeking! People who had found
Christ! People who were very unsatisfied with the
society in which they live and who wanted to
change it for the better.
It is an interesting fact that nearly 160,000
young people become Catholics each year, deciding
to take that step of personal faith in the oldest
Church in the world, the Catholic Church. The sacraments
have become important to them, a personal
prayer life is the cornerstone of each day,
they are engaged in good works for the poor and
the weak, and the value of life is their priority.
These are probably the best encounters of my
life: to see a young person who seriously ponders his
life, who doesn’t accept society and the media as ultimate
answers, who is prepared for challenges. The
themes of conversation with these young people are
limitless. They speak not just about sports, or what
clothes celebrities like Hilton and Spears are wearing,
or why Madonna and Angelina don’t allow their
own children to watch TV. They are young men and
women of substance and character.

to help the Youth Service Corps feed the poor!
Renovations to parish property
During the last few weeks we have made
several improvements to the parish property:
church and school buildings, entrances,
steps, tuck-pointing, repairing of leaks, inspection
of all structures.
We are especially grateful to Mr. Ivica
Kuhtic for refurbishing the main doors of the
church. We hope that this preventive measure
will protect our doors from the harsh
weather well into the coming years.
Invitation to Prayer All parishioners
are asked to participate in our family
prayer hour each evening between 6
and 7, or as your schedules allow. We
began this movement on Oct. 1st!
