6.2.6. Health care of PWDs<br />
LSMS shows that PWDs use health care<br />
services significantly more than the total population.<br />
The majority of PWDs use public health services,<br />
while only a small percentage use private health<br />
services. Costs of using health services and<br />
purchase of medicines are significantly higher for<br />
PWDs (by approximately 50 to 100 percent) in<br />
comparison to the total population, depending on<br />
the type of service. Almost all PWDs have health<br />
insurance (98.7 percent). Over three quarters of<br />
PWDs receive health insurance through their<br />
retirement scheme (76.6 percent), followed by 10.1<br />
percent on the basis of employment and 6.3 percent<br />
on the basis of unemployment.<br />
6.2.7. Income and expenditure of<br />
PWDs<br />
In <strong>2007</strong>, the average monthly household<br />
income of PWDs was 41 434 dinars and was almost<br />
the same in urban (41 343) and rural areas (41 549).<br />
The average monthly income of poor PWDs<br />
amounted to 19 981 dinars (48.2 percent lower than<br />
the overall average). The average income for the<br />
highest quintile was 2.5 times greater than for the<br />
lowest quintile.<br />
Over two thirds of the average household<br />
income structure in <strong>2007</strong> was made up of salaries<br />
and pensions (67.4 percent, whereby the proportion<br />
of salaries was 35.1 percent and that of pensions<br />
32.3 percent). This is followed by income from<br />
imputed rent and durable goods (8.0 percent), the<br />
estimated value of income in-kind (7.8 percent),<br />
income from agriculture (7.2 percent), income from<br />
social insurance (3.9 percent), money transfers from<br />
abroad (3.3 percent) and other income sources (2.6<br />
percent).<br />
Pensions make up almost one third of the<br />
income structure of poor PWD households (32.2<br />
percent), while salaries make up slightly less than<br />
one quarter (22.7 percent). In relation to the overall<br />
average income for these households and those<br />
above the poverty line, the estimated value of<br />
income in-kind (13.7 percent), income from social<br />
insurance (11.9 percent), as well as income from<br />
agriculture (9.8 percent) make up a significantly<br />
higher proportion of the overall income for<br />
households of PWDs living below the poverty line.<br />
Food (34.5 percent) and housing (19.3 percent)<br />
make up the greatest proportion of the consumption<br />
of households with PWDs. The Participation of<br />
these costs among households below the poverty<br />
line is significantly higher in comparison with the<br />
average and with households above the poverty line.<br />
The proportion of food expenditure within the total<br />
expenditure of poor households amounted to 44.4<br />
percent and housing (23.6 percent).<br />
The proportion of food expenditure in the total<br />
household expenditure decreases by quintiles, while<br />
the proportion of expenditure for transport<br />
increases, as does that of all non-production services<br />
– communication, recreation, education ad health.<br />
This indicates that the quality of the standard of life<br />
of households with PWDs increases with an<br />
increase in income and subsequent increase in<br />
expenditure.<br />
