Zbog svojeg prepoznatljivog i
There are seven indigenous dog breeds in Croatia:
– Croatian shepherd dog – The earliest records on the Croatian Shepherd dog date back to the 14 th century. In 1374, Bishop Peter of Đakovo
wrote that the Croats brought this shepherd dog with them during the migration to the Croatian lands from their original homeland. In the
past, it was virtually impossible to find a rural household without a Croatian Shepherd dog, as it managed the entire farm and organized all
the activities within, serving as an irreplaceable watcher of the livestock at pasture, and keeping animals out of the cultivated fields.
– Istrian wire-haired scent hound and Istrian short-haired scent hound – it is assumed that the Istrian scent hound is a very old breed, dating
back to the time of the Phoenicians; historically, it has had an important role in hunting and as a human accompaniment.
– Small Međimurje dog – Međi – legend says that this dog has been breed in Northwestern Croatia, in the Međimurje region for more than a
hundred years, and it is part of the Croatian heritage as a very useful dog on rural and urban households
– Tornjak – there are several theories about how the Tornjak breed came to be; some believe that the Turks introduced the Tornjak breed to
this area, other believe that the Croatian mountains are the true homeland for all the large shepherd dogs. Since its origins, it has been a loyal
helper for traditional livestock keepers.
– Dalmatian – this is considered to be a very old breed, and a very significant part of the Croatian cultural and historical heritage. Due to its
recognisability and attractive appearance, it is a common house pet, which contributes to the preservation of the breed.
– Posavina hound – it is possible that this hound originated from a hound from the Levant region, which spread through the migration from
Asia Minor and the Near East towards Southeast Europe; its historical role has primarily been in hunting.
