William “Billy” Wade was a son of Royal Wade and Rachel Jones, who came to
Kentucky from Franklin County, Virginia, about 1792. Louisa Crook Johnson was a
daughter of Jones Johnson and Mary “Polly” Crook. (Wade family Bible in the
possession of Dorothy Ellis Hedges, Bagdad, KY, transcribed by Ronald Harrod,
Bagdad, 1976.)
The Wade Bible is an Alexander’s Stereotype Edition, published by C. Alexander and
Company, Athenian Building, Franklin Place, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1834. It
was described by Ronald Harrod, another Wade descendant, as “very old & rotten and
moths have eaten part of it.” It measured about 12 by 8 inches. The front cover was
missing and the back cover was “very stiff” leather. Some of the pages appeared to be
missing, from when Harrod saw it some fifteen years earlier, while it was in the
possession of Ruth Duncan Ellis. It has not been determined to whom it originally
belonged, who made the entries or how it descended to Ruth Duncan Ellis, who gave it
to her daughter Dorothy Ellis Hedges, but it is reasonable to assume that Ruth received
it from her mother Martha Wade Duncan. The Bible also contained a loose-leaf birth
record for the family of Jones Johnson and Polly Crook. While residing in New York City
and visiting Bagdad, soon after receiving the transcript of the Bible entries from Ronald
Harrod in 1976, the compiler telephoned Mrs. Hedges for permission to see and
photograph the Bible. She reluctantly agreed, but when he arrived at her home, shortly
after calling, she did not answer the door, apparently, as has been stated by other
relatives in the Bagdad area, uneasy about admitting strangers into her house and a
jealous guardian of the Bible. Most of the upper third of the family record page,
containing the family of Royal Wade and Rachel Jones, is missing because of a
diagonal tear that carried away the names of the first four entries which probably
included the parents, since the first remaining notation is the day and year of the birth of
their first child Mary Wade in 1794:
G. F. Duncan and R. J. Wade was married Apr. 9, 1868
Martha Ellen Wade & W. D. Duncan were united by Thomas Daniel
at William Scrogins on this 18th day of Sep. 1877
in presence of James R. Duncan and G. F. Duncan
The birth entry for Martha Ellen Wade was copied erroneously as Mary Ellen in the
Harrod transcript, which Ronald later verified.
Ronald Harrod described the Johnson family record as a very old and fancy paper, not
part of the Bible, but in it. He misread the name Jones Johnson as James Johnson and
the middle initial of William Logan Johnson as J., but they are given correctly here for
clarity:
According to her marriage license, the parents of Mary Edna Wade were born in Shelby
County, Kentucky, probably at the home of her parents. Mary Crook Johnson, widow of
Jones Johnson, resided in Franklin County, Kentucky, on 13 February 1845, when she
and her children, including William and Louisa Wade, sold two tracts of land in Shelby
County, Kentucky. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Deed Book O2, pages 116-118.) The
ceremony was performed by Abraham Cook, minister of Indian Fork Baptist Church,
which is in Shelby County, not far from the Franklin County line. Abraham Cook was
related to the Scroggins family through the Bohannon family. The record seems to
identify both parties as residents of Franklin County, but the Wade family lived in
Shelby County: (Franklin County, Kentucky, Marriage Book 2, page30.)
I do certify that I did, on the 24th day of October, 1844, celebrate the rites of
matrimony between William Wade and Louisa C. Johnson of this County,
agreeably to the rules of the church to which I belong. Witness my hand this 24
day of October, 1844
Abraham Cooke
William and Louisa Johnson Wade were residents of Shelby County in 1850, when her
mother, two brothers and a sister lived with them: (Federal Census Microcopy 432, Roll
E. Johnson probably was Elizabeth Johnson Carr, widow of Preston Carr, who was
described unclearly to the enumerator as a daughter of Mary Crook Johnson and
mistakenly entered by her maiden name. However, Elizabeth Johnson Carr was only 35
in 1850. Elizabeth J. Johnson and Preston Carr obtained a marriage license, with the
consent of her father Jones Johnson, on 20 March 1835 and were married by Abraham
Cook on 21 March 1839. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriage Book 5A, page 727.)
Preston Carr apparently died before 13 February 1845, since he did not participate in
the deed by which the heirs of Jones Johnson, including Elizabeth Carr, sold his land.
(Shelby County, Kentucky, Deed Book O2, pages 116-118.) Elizabeth Carr, widow of
Preston Carr, was married to John Miles on 23 July 1855,by Thomas M. Daniel, with
William Wade and Anderson Wade as witnesses. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriage
Book 8, page 2374.)
Royal Wade and Anderson Wade, father and brother of William Wade, were
enumerated together, next to William, in 1850: (dwelling 917, family 917.)
Margaret Wade was an unmarried daughter of Royal Wade who later married Samuel
third. She was born in Kentucky and her father was born in Virginia.(Shelby County,
Kentucky, Marriage Book 6, page 1651.) By his first wife America Cheatham, Anderson
Wade had a son Obediah Wade. By his second wife Polly Anne Johnson, who was a
sister of Louisa Johnson Wade, he had a daughter Isabella ”Belle” Wade and, after
1850, a son Fountain Wade. Anderson and Polly were married by Abraham Cook on 01
September 1847, with James A. Wade, a son of Royal Wade, Jr. and Rebecca Miles,
as bondsman. (Shelby County, Kentucky. Marriage Book 6, page 1624.)
William and Louisa Johnson Wade were enumerated in Shelby County on 29 June
1860, with their children and his unmarried sister Eliza Wade, who was described as an
idiot, living with them in the area of Christiansburg Post Office. He was shown as having
real estate valued at $800 and personal property worth $425. All of their children had
them jointly from their father Royal Wade, without benefit of a deed or will. On 20 March
surveyed and equally divided between Anderson Wade and the widow and heirs of
William Wade. The division was made upon a motion by Anderson Wade, Louisa
Wade, Rebecca Wade, James W. Wade, Mary Scrogins and John Miles, guardian of
James W. Wade, R. W. Wade and Martha E. Wade. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Will
Book 31, page 396.) The naming of James W. Wade twice probably was a copying
error by the court clerk.
The death date for William Wade, and other vital statistics for his family, which were not
in the Wade Bible, appear in other family records. (Data of Garril L. Kueber, New
Orleans, LA, 1987.)
Mary Edna Wade and William Samuel Scrogins were married at the home of Mrs. L.
Wade on 25 January 1866. John Miles secured the bond and verified that the 16-yearold
girl had parental permission to marry. The groom was 23. The ceremony was
performed by T. M. Daniel, Minister of the Gospel, and witnessed by Walter Beckley
and John Miles: (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriage Book 9, page3168.)
and recorded by John F. Ballard
This gives the age of Mary Edna, as 18 but, having been born on 21 May 1849, she
was only 16 in January 1866.
William Samuel Scrogins, who married Edna Wade, as she was known, was a son of
Benjamin Scrogin and Pamelia Bohannon of Shelby County. In later years, William
usually signed his name Scrogins but his father signed his name Scrogin.
Louisa Scrogin, sister of William Samuel Scrogins, married William Elza Wade, son of
Royal Wade, Jr., on 14 October 1852. Thomas M. Daniel also conducted their
marriage. (Shelby County, Kentucky, Marriage Book 8, page 2119).
William and Louisa Johnson Wade may be buried in Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery
in northwestern Franklin County, near the Shelby County line. (Recollections of Sciota
Young Scroggins to the compiler). Lebanon Church is at the intersection of Lebanon
Ridge and Scrabble roads. The cemetery is in two parts. Some of the graves are across
the road and others are beside the church, which is where James William Wade, his
wife Anna Elizabeth Snook and daughter Jennie are interred: (Church and Family
Graveyards of Franklin County, The Kentucky Genealogical Society, Frankfort, 1976.)
Lebanon Ridge Road runs north from State Route 12, 4 miles east of Bagdad and 3.4
miles west of US421. SR12, which is called Dry Ridge Road in Franklin County, runs
west from US421, about 7 miles north of Frankfort. Lebanon Ridge Road also intersects
US421, north of the church, between the community of Flag Fork and the Henry County
line, 15.6 miles from New Castle.
