El sol y el viento discutían sobre cuál 

de los dos era más fuerte. 

La discusión fue larga, porque ninguno de los dos 

quería ceder. Viendo que por el camino avanzaba 

un hombre, acordaron en probar sus fuerzas 

desarrollándolas contra él. 

-Vas a ver – dijo el viento - como con sólo echarme 

sobre ese hombre, desgarro sus vestiduras. 

Y comenzó a soplar cuanto podía. Pero cuantos más 

esfuerzos hacían, el hombre más oprimía su capa, 

gruñendo contra el viento, y seguía caminando. 

El viento encolerizado, descargó lluvia y nieve, 

pero el hombre no se detuvo y más cerraba su capa. 

Comprendió el viento que no era posible 

arrancarle la capa. 

Sonrió el Sol mostrándose entre dos nubes, recalentó 

la tierra y el pobre hombre, que se regocijaba con 

aquel dulce calor, se quitó la capa y se la puso 

sobre el hombro. 

-Ya ves - le dijo el Sol al Viento 

-como con la bondad se consigue más 

que con la violencia. 

Pensemos que los demás seguramente 

prefieren lo mismo que nosotros… Entonces tratemos 

a nuestros semejantes de la misma manera 

en la que nos gustaría ser tratados… Así veremos 

que todo será mejor… Que la vida será mejor… 

Que el mundo será mejor…

Los peces están constituido en su mayor 

parte de agua, el resto de su cuerpo es un

se hundirían, los peces viajan en manadas 

por el cambio de clima, también pueden 

vivir en agua dulce.

"niños asombrados", su obra

posguerra civil. Ana María Matute 

se dio a conocer en la escena 

literaria española con Los 

Abel (1948), una novela inspirada 

en la historia bíblica de los hijos 

de Adán y Eva, en la cual reflejó la 

atmósfera española desde el 

punto de vista infantil. Las novelas 

de Ana María Matute logró 

desarrollar un estilo personal que 

se adentró en lo imaginativo y 

configuró un mundo lírico, 

emocional y delicado. Su obra 

resulta así ser una rara 

combinación de denuncia social y 

de mensaje poético, ambientada 

con frecuencia en el universo de 

la infancia y la adolescencia de la 

España de la posguerra. 

Ana María Matute fue 

galardonada con el premio Café 

Gijón por Fiesta al noroeste 

(1953) y con el premio Planeta 

por Pequeño teatro (1954), novela 

a la que siguió En esta 

tierra (1955). También recibió el 

premio de la Crítica y el Nacional 

de Literatura por Los hijos 

muertos (1958). 

Más tarde escribió

I was part of the Royal

Manuel Quintero Bersamin 

Nací en Watsonville, California. Mi historia 

debe comenzar con mis padres, los cuales 

inmigraron a los Estados Unidos para trabajar y 

así ayudar a su familia a sobrevivir. Mi padre, 

Max Bersamin, inmigró de las Filipinas y fue 

contratado, antes del programa Bracero, para 

trabajar en los campos agrícolas de California. 

Mi padre trabajó cincuenta años como 

campesino. La única razón por la cual dejó el 

campo fue porque comenzó a desmayarse 

mientras trabajaba. Mi madre, Victoria 

Quintero Bersamin, es de Mezcatitlan, Sinaloa, 

México. Ella vino a los Estados Unidos como 

persona indocumentada cuando conoció a mi 

padre en Calexico, California. Se mudaron a 

Watsonville y mi madre trabajó en el campo y 

fábricas de conserva de Watsonville por 

aproximadamente cuarenta años. 

Conforme crecía, vivía la vida de un hijo de 

dos trabajadores inmigrantes. Mis padres se 

levantaban muy temprano todas las mañanas 

para preparar su desayuno y almuerzo. 

Recuerdo que me levantaba con la música 

tradicional ranchera mexicana y escuchaba 

que mis padres se estaban preparando para su 

trabajo. Mi padre se iba a trabajar antes de 

que saliera el sol, y regresaba a casa después 

de la puesta del sol. Mi madre en ocasiones 

trabajaba hasta 16 horas, ya que trabajaba 

dos turnos consecutivos de ocho horas en las 

fábricas de conserva. 

Cuando aún era un niño, comencé a trabajar 

con mi padre mientras él regaba los campos. 

Después, cuando era un adolescente, durante 

los veranos trabajé con mis primos 

desherbando los campos de lechuga. Mientras 

trabajaba en el campo, cuando no me 

encontraba escuchando música o platicando 

con mis primos, recuerdo ver coches 

recreacionales en la carretera llenos de 

familias que viajaban a algún lugar para 

disfrutar las vacaciones de verano. Recuerdo 

que me preguntaba a dónde iban las familias 

y cómo las familias poseían los recursos 

financieros para no tener que trabajar durante 

los veranos y poder viajar a lugares divertidos. 

Conforme crecí, me di cuenta que en este país 

democrático también existía la injusticia. 

La sociedad devaluaba a la gente trabajadora 

porque la identificaba como clase social 

inferior, mientras mostraba respeto, 

oportunidades y conexiones para los que se 

encontraban en la parte superior de la clase 

social. Yo sabía que esto no era correcto 

porque las familias que yo conocía, todas 

trabajaban en el campo o en fábricas de 

conserva y merecían el mismo respeto, honor y 

riqueza que aquellos que se encontraban en la 

parte superior de la clase social. Me di cuenta 

de que muchos eran ricos por accidente, y no 

porque trabajaban tan arduamente como los 

de la clase trabajadora. 

Viendo tales eventos, intenté averiguar cómo 

era que algunos de la clase trabajadora podían 

avanzar hacia la clase media y de esta manera 

progresar socialmente y obtener riqueza. 

Encontré mi inspiración en Abraham Lincoln y 

Benito Juárez, los cuales comenzaron como 

niños sin educación y como hombres se auto 

educaron para después liderar a sus naciones. 

También encontré mi inspiración en Emiliano 

Zapata y Cesar Chávez, ya que ellos usaron su 

conocimiento para llevar sus comunidades a 

obtener justicia social e igualdad. 

Me di cuenta que la educación era el gran 

igualador. Aquí en los Estados Unidos yo podía 

usar la educación para comenzar a entender la 

sociedad establecida por los anglos y de esta 

manera comenzar a subir de posición social. 

Poco a poco me di cuenta de que la única 

ventaja que los anglos tenían sobre las 

familias inmigrantes era que ellos ya tenían 

generaciones establecidas en los Estados 

Unidos y habían obtenido educación y capital. 

Sabía que con consejería académica, mi 

comunidad podía lograr lo mismo y así escalar 

niveles sociales. 

Comencé mi educación post-secundaria y me 

di cuenta que para que mi comunidad 

progresara, necesitaba ser educada. 

Después de graduarme de la preparatoria de 

Watsonville continué con mis estudios en el 

Colegio Cabrillo. Asistí al Colegio Cabrillo por 

aproximadamente cuatro años, tratando de 

sobrellevar mis propias dudas en cuanto a mi 

lugar en esta sociedad como un joven Latino. 

Terminé mis años en el colegio y decidí asistir 

a una universidad donde se había muchos 

estudiantes Latinos. Me mudé a Los Ángeles y 

me inscribí en la Universidad de California (UC) 

Irvine. Durante mi estancia en la universidad, 

estaba intentando obtener un conocimiento de 

mi mismo como miembro de una minoría 

sub-representada (Latinos en los 1980’s) y un 

conocimiento más profundo de mi mismo 

como individuo. En retrospectiva, estaba 

participando en la búsqueda de mi identidad 

como Latino y norteamericano y qué papel 

jugaba mi comunidad en relación a la sociedad 

de ese tiempo. 

Lo que descubrí es que a pesar de que nuestra 

comunidad Mexicana estaba creciendo día con día, 

especialmente después del programa de amnistía 

de Reagan (IRCA), nosotros como pueblo éramos 

considerados educacionalmente, económicamente 

y políticamente como muy débil. Es por medio de la 

educación nuestra comunidad Mexicana 

desarrollaría poder e influencia en este país. 

Durante mi estancia en la 

universidad trabajé en el 

r e c l u t a m i e n t o d e 

estudiantes de bajos 

i n g r e s o s y 

sub-representados en las 

preparatorias y colegios 

comunitarios. Después de 

g r a d u a r m e d e l a 

universidad en 1985, 

trabajé para el programa 

Extensión de Oportunidades, 

Programas y Servicios 

(EOPS) en el Colegio Hartnell 

por tres años mientras 

asistía a la Universidad 

Estatal de San José (SJSU) 

para obtener mi credencial como consejero 

académico. Posteriormente trabajé como 

consejero del programa migrante por varios 

años para el Programa Migrante del Condado 

de Monterey en Castroville. En mi capacidad 

como consejero académico, pude enviar a 

muchos estudiantes migrantes a la 

universidad, incluyendo a los primeros 

estudiantes migrantes a la Universidad de 

California (UC) y la Universidad de Stanford. 

También apoyé a coordinar programas 

académicos durante el verano tal como el 

programa Yo Puedo en la Universidad de 

California San Cruz (UCSC). Obtuve mi maestría 

en educación, con un énfasis en 

administración educacional, en la Universidad 

de Stanford. Fue en la Universidad de Stanford 

en donde fui muy afortunado al conocer a un 

profesor el cual me motivó a solicitar a la 

Universidad de Arizona, en el colegio de 

educación de Tucson. El profesor me dijo que 

siendo yo un hijo de campesinos, se lo debía a 

mi comunidad en lograr un doctorado en 

filosofía (PhD). 

Cada vez que me iba de Watsonville a continuar 

con mi educación, mi familia, y en especial mi 

madre siempre me apoyaba en mis decisiones, a 

pesar de que ella necesitaba el apoyo de su único 

hijo varón. Mi madre fue y sigue siendo mi 

inspiración y como mujer fuerte mexicana, ella 

me inspiró a servir a mi comunidad y elevar la 

comunidad inmigrante mexicana. 

He trabajado en diferentes posiciones desde 

que terminé mis estudios en Arizona. He sido 

profesor en la Universidad Estatal de Fresno, 

he trabajado en la Universidad de California 

Santa Cruz, y en la Universidad Estatal de 

Monterey Bay (CSUMB) trabajé para el 

Programa de Asistencia Colegial para 

Estudiantes Migrantes (CAMP) y actualmente 

trabajo en el Colegio Hartnell para el programa 

de apoyo estudiantil TRiO. En cada institución 

he trabajado como director de programas de 

reclutamiento y retención y todos han sido muy 

exitosos bajo mi liderazgo. En cada institución, 

he utilizado mi experiencia y educación para 

inspirar a los hijos de Latinos inmigrantes para 

que sobresalgan por si mismos por medio de la 

educación. 

También participé en la política a nivel local en 

Watsonville y en el 2006 me convertí en uno 

de los pocos Latinos de venir de una familia de 

campesinos en convertirme en alcalde de 

Watsonville, California. Yo fui el primer alcalde 

de Watsonville en tener descendencia Filipina. 

Mi madre estaba muy orgullosa de mi y estoy 

seguro que mi padre de origen Filipino, el cual 

falleció en 1996, también ha de haber estado 

muy orgulloso de mi. Bajo mi liderazgo como 

alcalde de Watsonville, la ciudad se convirtió 

en una ciudad santuario para la comunidad 

indocumentada. También participé en el 

desarrollo de nuevas viviendas para algunos 

de los residentes Latinos de más bajos 

recursos de Watsonville. 

Como un educador profesional, mi propósito 

es ayudar a la cantidad más grande de 

individuos a obtener su educación. Estimo que 

he enviado a cientos de Latinos al colegio y 

universidad durante los últimos veintisiete 

años. Tengo estudiantes que actualmente son 

médicos, trabajadores sociales, maestros, 

directores, profesores de universidad, y 

consejeros entre otras profesiones. Tal como lo 

había imaginado, ahora muchos de mis 

estudiantes se están preparando para enviar a 

sus propios hijos a la universidad. Esta 

segunda generación de estudiantes comenzará 

con más entendimiento y yo 

espero tendrán más éxito en 

resolver cuestiones que afligen a 

Latinos. Uno de los obstáculos 

que actualmente tengo es 

encontrar maneras de enviar a los 

estudiantes a la universidad ya 

que año tras año los costos 

siguen aumentando. Otro 

obstáculo que tengo es encontrar 

maneras para poder apoyar a los 

estudiantes indocumentados, a 

los que se conocen como 

Soñadores (Dreamers) y a los que 

no se identifican como Soñadores 

mientras intentan encontrar 

maneras de financiar su 

educación universitaria. Finalmente, el 

obstáculo mas grande es encontrar la manera 

de motivar a más familias Latinas a tener una 

mente académica en sus hogares para que así 

la universidad sea una expectativa desde muy 

temprana edad. 

Nosotros como comunidad Latina de origen 

Mexicano aún tenemos los niveles 

educacionales más bajos de este país, pero 

somos la mayoría en las escuelas de California. 

Se estima que en aproximadamente dentro de 

46 años, los Latinos serán la mayoría en 

California. Como raza nos debemos educar 

para así realizar completamente nuestro 

destino como raza. Espero que Dios me siga 

bendiciendo con energía y más años de vida ya 

que me siento que estoy luchando contra el 

tiempo en preparar a la comunidad Latina de 

California a reclamar su destino. 

Paloma Revista despide este año, con un 

gran ser humano, que destaca grandemente 

por su humildad y bondad, no solo por motivar 

a nuestros jóvenes, sino porque también es el 

conductor y motor de ellos, por su pasión en 

todo lo que hace, es un gran honor nominarlo 

como Nuestro Orgullo Hispano eternamente.

I was born in Watsonville, California. My story 

should start with my parents, who immigrated 

to the United States to work and help my 

family survive. My father, Max Bersamin, 

immigrated from the Philippines and was hired 

before the Bracero program, to work in the 

agricultural fields of California. My father 

worked as a farmer for fifty years. The only 

reason he left was because he began to faint 

in the fields while working. My mother, Victoria 

Quintero Bersamin, is from Mezcatitlan, 

Sinaloa, México. She came to the United 

States as an undocumented person when she 

met my father in Calexico, California. They 

moved to Watsonville and my mother worked 

in the fields and canneries in Watsonville for 

about forty years. 

As I grew, I lived the life of a child of two 

migrant workers. My parents got up early every 

morning to prepare breakfast and lunch. 

I remember I got up to sound of traditional 

Mexican ranchera music and heard my parents 

as they prepared for work. My father worked 

before sunrise, and returned home after 

sunset. My mother sometimes worked up to 

16 hours, working two consecutive shifts of 

eight hours. 

When I was a child, I started working with my 

father while he watered the fields. Then, during 

the summers when I was a teenager I worked 

with my cousins weeding lettuce fields. While 

working in the field when I was not listening to 

music or chatting with my cousins, I remember 

seeing recreational cars on the road full of 

families traveling somewhere to enjoy summer 

vacation. I remember wondering how families 

had the financial resources to avoid working 

during the summers and were able to travel 

to fun places. 

As I grew older, I realized in 

this democratic country 

injustice existed. Society 

devalued working people and 

identified them as part of an 

inferior social class, while 

society respected and gave 

opportunities for those who 

were part of high class. 

I knew this was not right 

because the families I knew, 

all working in the field or in 

canneries deserved the 

same respect, honor and 

wealth than those who were 

at the top of the class. 

I realized that many were 

rich by accident, not because 

they worked as hard as those 

of the working class. 

I tried to figure out why was 

it that some of the working 

class could move into the 

middle class and thus 

progress socially and gain 

wealth. 

I found my inspiration in Abraham Lincoln 

and Benito Juárez, who as children had no 

education and as self-educated men they led 

their nations. I also found inspiration in 

Emiliano Zapata and Cesar Chavez, as they 

used their knowledge to lead their 

communities to obtain social justice and 

equality. 

I realized that education is the great equalizer. 

Here in the US, I could use education to begin 

to understand society established by the 

anglos and thus begin to rise in status. 

Gradually I realized that the only advantage 

that some Anglos had over immigrant families 

was that they had been established for 

generations in the United States and had 

obtained an education and capital. I knew that 

with academic advising, my community could 

do the same and thus scale social levels. 

I started my post-secondary education and I 

realized that for my community progress 

meant education. 

After graduating from high school in 

Watsonville I continued my studies at Cabrillo 

College. I attended Cabrillo College for about 

four years, trying to overcome my own doubts 

about my place in this society as a young 

Latino. I finished my years in school and 

decided to attend university. I moved to Los 

Angeles and enrolled at the University of 

California (UC) Irvine. During my time in 

college, I was trying to get an understanding of 

myself as a member of an underrepresented 

minority group (Latinos in the 1980s) and a 

deeper knowledge of myself as an individual. 

In retrospect, I was finding my identity as a 

Latino and American and what role my 

community had on the society of that time. 

What I discovered is that although our 

Mexican community was growing day by day, 

especially after the Reagan amnesty program 

(IRCA), we as a people were considered weak 

educationally, economically and politically. 

It is through education that our Mexican 

community could develop power and influence 

in this country. 

During my time at the university I worked in 

recruiting low-income and underrepresented 

students from high schools and community 

colleges. After graduating from college in 

1985, I worked for the Extended Opportunity 

Programs and Services (EOPS) program at 

Hartnell College for three years while attending 

San Jose State University (SJSU) for my 

credentials as an academic counselor. Later I 

worked as director of the migrant program for 

several years for the Migrant Program 

Monterey County in Castroville. In my capacity 

as a counselor, I could send many migrant 

students to college, including the first migrant 

students to the University of California (UC) 

and Stanford University. I also supported and 

coordinate academic summer programs such 

as Yo Puedo at the University of California 

San Cruz (UCSC). 

I got my master's degree in education with an 

emphasis in educational administration from 

Stanford University. It was at Stanford 

University where I was fortunate enough to 

meet a teacher who motivated me to apply to 

the University of Arizona in Tucson school 

education. The teacher told me that being a 

son of campesinos, I owed it to my community 

to earn a doctorate in philosophy (PhD). 

Every time I came to Watsonville to continue 

my education, my family, especially my mother 

was always supportive of my decisions, even 

though she needed the support of her only 

son. My mother was and is my inspiration. 

She is a strong Mexican woman, she has 

inspired me to serve my community and 

enhance our Mexican immigrant community. 

I have worked in different positions since I 

finished my studies in Arizona. I have been a 

professor at Fresno State University, I worked 

at the University of California Santa Cruz, and 

the State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) 

worked for Program College Assistance 

Migrant Student (CAMP) and currently work at 

Hartnell College for TRiO student Support 

program. In each institution I worked as the 

director of recruitment and retention programs 

and all have been very successful under my 

leadership. In each institution, I used my 

experience and education to inspire children of 

Latino immigrants to excel through education. 

I also participated in politics locally in 

Watsonville and in 2006 I became one of the 

few Latinos who came from a family of farmers 

to become the mayor of Watsonville, California. 

I was the first mayor of Watsonville of Filipino 

descendent. My mother was very proud of me 

and I am sure my father of Filipino origin, who 

died in 1996, also must have been very proud 

of me. Under my leadership as the mayor of 

Watsonville, the city became a sanctuary city 

for the undocumented community. I also 

participated in the development of new homes 

for the Latino low income residents. 

As a professional educator, my purpose is to 

help the largest number of 

individuals to obtain their education. 

I believe that I have sent 

hundreds of Latinos to college and 

u n i v e r s i t i e s f o r t h e p a s t 

twenty-seven years. I have students 

that are now doctors, social workers, 

teachers, principals, university 

professors and counselors among 

other professions. As I had 

imagined, now many of my students 

are preparing to send their own 

children to college. This second 

generation of students will start with 

more understanding and I hope will 

be more successful in resolving 

issues that afflict Latinos. 

One of the obstacles now is finding 

ways to send students to the 

university since year after year costs 

continue to rise. Another obstacle 

now is finding ways to support 

undocumented students, who are 

known as Dreamers and those who 

do not identify as Dreamers while 

trying to find ways to finance their 

college education. Finally, the biggest obstacle 

is finding ways to motivate more Latino 

families to have an academic mind in their 

homes so that the university is an expectation 

from an early age. 

We as a Latino community of Mexican origin 

still have the lowest educational levels in this 

country, and we are the majority in California 

schools. It is estimated that within about 46 

years, Latinos will be the majority in California. 

As a race we must educate ourselves in order 

to fully realize our destiny as a race. 

I hope God continues to bless me with energy 

and more years of life because I feel like I'm 

fighting against time to prepare the Latino 

community in California to claim its destiny. 

Paloma Revista ends this year with 

an incredible human being who not only 

stands out because of his humility and 

helping out our youth, but also because 

he motivates and drives our youth to 

succeed, and for his passion in all that he 

does; it's a great honor to nominate him 

as Our Orgullo Hispano for eternity.

La Basilica de San Pedro 

(ROMA) 

La basilica de San Pedro alcanzó su aspecto 

actual gracias a la intervención de Carlo 

Maderno, que retomó la estructura 

basilical de cruz latina, y definió el aspecto 

escenog ráfico de l a fachada. 

Los trabajos de la basílica terminaron en 

1626 y consagrada solemnemente bajo el 

pontificado de Urbano VIII. Entre 1656 y 

1667, por voluntad de Alejandro VII, Bernini 

proyectó y realizó el monumental pórtico 

de columnas de la Plaza de San Pedro, 

colocando en su centro el obelisco del siglo 

I a.C., situado originariamente, en el centro 

del circo de Calígula, lugar del martirio de 

san Pedro. En 1585, el obelisco fue 

trasladado por Domenico Fontana y 

colocado en el lugar actual, siguiendo 

órdenes del papa Sixto V. 

La Basílica de San Pedro posee una 

capacidad de 20.000 fieles. Mide unos 190 

metros de largo, el ancho de las tres naves 

es de 58 metros, la nave central tiene 

45,50 metros de altura, hasta la cima de la 

bóveda, la cúpula alcanza unos 136 metros 

de altura hasta la cruz; el interior, 

caracterizado por grandiosas decoraciones 

en mosaico, constituye el precioso joyero 

que custodia algunas de las más célebres 

obras de arte del mundo, como el 

Baldaquino de Bernini y la estatua de la 

Piedad de Miguel Ángel.

The basilica of san Peter reached its present 

appearance thanks to the intervention of 

Carlo Maderno, who retook the Latin cross

El Adviento 

¡Otro año más que se acaba! ¡Otra Navidad! 

Estarás pensando con quién la pasarás, 

esperando el aguinaldo, preocupado por los 

regalos, por lo que cocinarás... 

Detente un momento y reflexiona. ¿Te 

preocupa vivir una Navidad diferente? En 

este folleto te proponemos cómo hacerlo. 

¡VIENE EL HIJO DE DIOS! Imagina que te 

llega una carta diciendo que en cuatro 

semanas, llegará a tu casa a hospedarse, el 

Hijo de Dios. ¡Qué honor! ¿Cómo a mi casa? 

¿Qué haría yo? Por supuesto no me 

quedaría sentado y dejaría pasar el tiempo 

para preparar el recibimiento. Manos a la 

o b r a : 

1) Hay que hacer una buena limpieza de la 

c a s a . 

2) Hay que recoger el tiradero, el desorden, 

p o n e r o r d e n e n c a s a . 

3) Hay que adornar, pintar, poner flores, que 

se vea más bonita la casa. 

4) Hay que preparar con alegría el 

r e c i b i m i e n t o . 

¿ QUE ES EL ADVIENTO ? 

- Cuando el Mesías llegó, pocos le 

esperaban realmente. "Vino a su propia 

casa, y los suyos no le recibieron" (Jn 1,11). 

Muchos de aquellos judíos, ocupados en sus 

quehaceres diarios, se habían dormido para 

lo más esencial de sus vidas y de la vida del 

mundo.- La palabra Adviento es de origen 

latino y quiere decir: VENIDA. 

- Para los católicos, el Adviento es un tiempo 

de espera, un tiempo especial para preparar 

el espíritu para el nacimiento de Jesús en la 

N a v i d a d . 

- El tiempo de adviento abarca cuatro 

s e m a n a s a n t e s d e N a v i d a d . 

- Ocuparé cada una de estas semanas, en 

las 4 tareas para preparar mi casa: limpiar, 

o r d e n a r , a d o r n a r , a l e g r a r . 

1) TIEMPO DE LIMPIAR 

- ¿Me atrevería a recibir al Hijo de Dios, en 

una casa llena de suciedad? Imposible. De 

igual manera, Jesús no podría hospedarse 

en mi alma, si esta está llena de pecado. 

- La mejor manera de preparar mi alma para 

la venida del niño Jesús es reflexionando, 

qué cosas me separan de Dios. Haré un 

examen profundo, pensando con cuales de 

mis actos le ofendo. Después me esforzaré 

por hacer una buena CONFESIÓN, pidiendo 

de corazón a Dios perdón por haberle 

ofendido a El que tanto me ama. 

Finalmente, haré un firme propósito de 

enmendarme, de poner los medios 

c o n c r e t o s p a r a c a m b i a r . 

- Veré que una vez con el alma limpia, estaré 

mucho mejor dispuesto para seguir con los 

p r e p a r a t i v o s . 

2) TIEMPO DE ORDENAR 

- Es muy fácil volver a ensuciar la casa, si el 

tiradero, y el desorden no se quitan. De igual 

modo, será fácil volver a ensuciar mi alma, 

si no ordeno mis ideas, mis creencias, 

m i s p r i o r i d a d e s . 

- Poner prioridades, significa pensar qué es 

lo primero importante en mi vida, qué es lo 

segundo, qué es lo tercero... 

- Pensaré que para todo católico lo más 

importante debiera ser, vivir de manera que 

logre llegar al cielo, a vivir toda la eternidad, 

i n f i n i t a m e n t e f e l i z c o n D i o s . 

3) TIEMPO DE ADORNAR 

- Una vez limpia y ordenada la casa, ahora sí 

se puede adornar. ¿Cómo adorno mi alma 

para recibir al Hijo de Dios dignamente? 

- El alma se embellece con las virtudes. 

Cultivando las acciones buenas y las 

actitudes buenas, por ejemplo siendo 

sencillo, sirviendo o haciendo favores a los 

demás, siendo amable, hablando bien de los 

otros, ayudando a aquel que está más 

amolado que yo, aceptando y teniendo 

paciencia con aquel que me cuesta, 

perdonando a aquel que me ofendió... 

- Esta tercera semana trataré de llenar mi 

alma de muchas obras buenas. Además al 

finalizar la semana reflexionaré cuan feliz 

me hizo el ser bueno y a cuántas personas 

di también felicidad. ¿No valdría la pena 

seguir así aunque acabe el adviento? 

4) TIEMPO DE ALEGRÍA 

- ¡Todo preparado en la casa! Ahora es 

tiempo de pensar en EL INVITADO. 

El invitado es nada más y nada menos que 

J e s u c r i s t o , e l h i j o d e D i o s . 

- La más grande prueba de que Dios nos 

ama infinitamente, es haber mandado a su 

hijo Jesús al mundo para salvarnos. He de 

reflexionar, que gracias a su venida es que 

yo podré un día ir al cielo. 

- El Adviento es entonces y sobretodo un 

t i e m p o d e a l e g r í a p r o f u n d a . 

- Si te fijas, todos los que participaron de 

cerca en el nacimiento de Jesús: San José, 

la Virgen María, los pastores, los santos 

r e y e s , t od os estaban a l eg r es . 

- De igual manera mi vida debe ser también 

como un Adviento 

- Mi alegría no debe depender de las cosas 

de la tierra: noticias agradables, salud, 

tranquilidad, desahogo económico para 

sacar la familia adelante, etc. La verdadera 

alegría cristiana, esa que trae una paz y 

serenidad que nadie puede quitar, sólo la 

tiene aquel hombre que logra escapar de si 

mismo, cuando ama a los demás y hace la 

v o l u n t a d d e D i o s . 

- Este Adviento trataré de vivir esta alegría, 

con una sonrisa, una palabra cordial, un 

pequeño elogio, llevar alegría a un mundo 

que está triste porque se va alejando de 

Dios.LA CORONA DE ADVIENTO 

- Existe la tradición de hacer en casa una 

"Corona de Adviento", que es un círculo de 

follaje verde (pino, abeto o hiedra), envuelta 

con un listón rojo y en cuyo centro se colocan 

4 velas, para que la familia encienda 

una cada domingo de Adviento mientras 

hace oración. El círculo simboliza la 

eternidad, el color verde simboliza la vida y 

la esperanza. El listón rojo significa el amor 

de Dios que nos envuelve y también nuestro 

amor que espera con ansiedad el 

nacimiento del Hijo de Dios. La luz de las 

velas simboliza nuestra fe. 

PROPÓSITO DEL MES: 

- Cada uno de los 4 domingos de este Adviento, 

me reuniré con mi familia, encenderé una de las 

velas de la corona, leeré un pedazo del evangelio 

que me cuenta con detalle como fue el 

nacimiento de Jesús. ¡ESTE AÑO SÍ PREPARARÉ 

CON ESMERO LA VERDADERA NAVIDAD!

COMES THE SON OF GOD! 

Imagine you get a letter saying that in four

WHAT IS THE ADVENT? 

- When the Messiah came, few really 

expected. "He came to his own home, and 

his own received him not" (Jn 1:11). Many 

of those Jews, busy in their daily chores, 

had been asleep for the essentials of their 

lives and the life of the world. The word 

Advent is of Latin origin and means: 

COMING. 

- For Catholics, Advent is a time of waiting, 

a special spirit to prepare for the birth of 

Jesus at Christmas time. 

- The season of Advent covers four weeks 

before Christmas. 

- I'll take each of these weeks, 4 tasks to 

prepare my house clean, tidy, decorate, 

brighten. 

1) TIME TO CLEAN 

- I would receive the Son of God, in a 

house full of dirt? Impossible. Similarly, 

Jesus could not stay in my soul, if it is full 

of sin. 

- The best way to prepare my soul for the 

coming of the Christ child is thinking, what 

things separate me from God. I will do a 

thorough examination, thinking of my acts 

which offend him. Then I do my best to 

make a good Confession, asking God for 

forgiveness by heart for having offended 

Him he loves me. Finally, I will make a firm 

resolve to mend, to put concrete means to 

change. 

- I'll see it once with a clean soul, I'll be 

much better prepared to continue with 

p r e p a r a t i o n s . 

2) TIME TO SORT 

- It is very easy re-soiling the house, if the 

dump, and disorder are not removed. 

Similarly, it will be easy to return to a dirty 

soul, if I do not organize my ideas, my 

beliefs, my priorities. 

- Setting priorities, means thinking about 

what is important in your life what is first, 

what is second, what is third ... 

- I will think that to every Catholic should 

be the most important thing, to live so that 

they make it to heaven, to live eternity, 

i n f i n i t e l y h a p p y w i t h G o d . 

3) DECORATING TIME 

- Once clean and tidy the house, now you 

can decorate. How do I decorate my soul 

to receive the Son of God with dignity? 

- The soul is embellished with virtues. 

Cultivating good deeds and good attitudes, 

for example being simple, serving or doing 

favors for others, being friendly, speaking 

good of others, helping one who is more

patient with one that costs me forgiving 

him who offended me ... 

- The third week I try to fill my soul with 

many good works. Also at the end of the

4) TIME OF JOY

an Advent 

- My joy should not depend on the things

THE CROWN OF ADVENT 

- There is a tradition of making home a 

'Advent wreath, "which is a circle of green 

foliage (pine, fir or ivy), wrapped with a red 

ribbon in the center and 4 candles are 

placed, so that the family will light one 

every Sunday of Advent while praying. 

The circle symbolizes eternity, the green 

symbolizes life and hope. The red bar 

means the love of God that surrounds us 

and also our love waiting anxiously for the 

birth of the Son of God. Lighting the candles 

symbolizes our faith. 

PURPOSE OF THE MONTH: 

- Each of the four Sundays of this Advent, I will 

meet with my family, I will light a candle crown, 

read a piece of the gospel that tells me in detail

Right before I started school, I thought that by going to 

college and getting a degree, things were going to 

miraculously improve and heal. They did, sort of. I 

somehow believed within my own naiveté that with an 

education, all of my siblings were going to go to 

college, automatically, soon after, just like me. I 

thought they were going to have the same goals and 

dreams, as I was setting the example for them, and for 

a while I took this role model thing very seriously. 

I wanted my sisters and little brother to see this could 

be done. I wanted them to know they can dream, 

dream beyond Salinas, beyond Monterey County, 

beyond California, beyond the United States. I wanted 

them to realize that they were capable, smart enough, 

talented enough, and special enough to excel and 

achieve in life. I wanted them to aspire, at least to 

aspire and allow themselves to believe in the 

possibility to make their dreams comes true. 

I wanted them to realize that their dreams could be 

carried out and acted out beyond the confines of their 

imagination. They too could dream and achieve like 

the kids on TV, the kids with the nice clothes, 

individual bedrooms, happy parents, three warm 

meals a day around the table, always with the smiles, 

always like a family should be, according to our TV 

screens. I wanted them to see that despite the fact 

that things were not like our TV shows, we could still 

achieve our dreams. I wanted them to realize they 

could dream beyond, our parents did it, they dreamed 

beyond their small town realities in Mexico, it wasn’t 

easy for them, it came with a painful price, but they 

did it, they managed to dream beyond their birthplace 

in search of a better life for their family and 

themselves. They allowed themselves to believe in the 

possibly of their dreams, they allowed themselves to 

see that the dreams within their imaginations could 

one day become their reality. I always believed that if 

our parents could do it, we could too, this was so clear 

to me from a very early age. I firmly believed that no 

one, absolutely no one could ever tell me what I was 

capable of doing or achieving, I was not going to let 

anyone’s own personal experience in life determine 

mine. I was not going to allow some ones fear to fail 

interfere with my unstoppable will to succeed to push 

and achieve beyond my wildest imagination because 

some of the people who don’t achieve and succeed 

follow this past because long the way someone made 

them believe they were not good enough, smart 

enough, or were not even allowed to dream, they were 

not allowed to be more than what they thought they

Chapter 8: I Dream You Can Dream 

could be. So many of my friends growing up never 

thought about themselves as college material, as the 

type of people who go to college and earn a decent 

living, they were set to work hard, all the time, for a 

minimum pay to live a minimum life. I never wanted a 

minimal life, I respect those who have it because they 

genuinely choose that life because to them that’s 

happiness, but its hard for me to understand those 

who chose to live a minimal life because they are 

afraid to fail they are afraid to try because, somewhere 

along the way they believed those people who did not 

believe in them, because they found the right amount 

of excuses to justify their lack of action, their lack to 

dream. I guess, what I’m trying to say is that for me, 

school meant a way out a way to dream beyond. It was 

a way to go beyond living a hotel for months on end, 

beyond no lunch money at school, it was beyond cold 

free lunches, it was beyond no money in college, it was 

beyond no gas money at home, no money for 

vacations, no money for entertainment as a family, no 

money for family dinners, no money for a decent home 

to raise a family, no parents because of work. 

I thought that with a B.A. I was going to heal all this, I 

was going to make things better, but I can’t. I haven’t 

been able to, but I dream, I still continue to dream and 

hope and wish every single day that one day this will 

be true, that my siblings and parents will live how they 

deserve. You see I always dreamed of going to school 

for my love to learn and because I swore to myself that 

once I had a degree my family would never experience 

pain. I believed that with a degree my mother was 

never going to be on the floor in tears, feeling 

hopeless. I believed that with a degree my stepfather 

was never going to be exploited or robbed of an equal 

pay. I believed that with a degree my two sisters were 

going to follow my path because with my example they 

were going to see that it could be done. I believed that 

with a degree my younger sisters and brother were 

going to have a better life. I believed that with a 

degree my extended family was going heal, and not 

pain. I believed that with a degree things would get 

better. In some ways they did, but in many others they 

didn’t. I still hope that one day my dream of a better 

tomorrow for all of those around me becomes a 

reality. I still dream that one day my family believes in 

the possibly of achieving their dreams.

Al día siguiente, ambos se despertaron al escuchar un 

fuerte sonido en la puerta. Ella lo sacudió un poco y le 

dijo: “corre, ve a ver quién toca…de seguro es la cuna 

de Zoe”. El la escuchó y la ignoró, aún seguía un poco 

dormido, y ella una vez más le pidió que fuera a ver a la 

puerta. Hasta el segundo pedido, él se levantó y le hizo 

caso. Ella tenía razón justo al lado de la entrada de la 

casa estaba una caja enorme, llena de piezas e 

instrucciones y ella por sus supersticiones sabía que 

todo saldría bien, pronto tendrían a la pequeña Zoe en 

casa. 

El tomó la caja y la llevó al cuarto y le preguntó: 

“¿dónde la quieres?”. Ella sin decir una palabra apuntó a 

una esquina del cuarto. Momentos después, ella se 

levantó y le dijo con gran emoción: “¡armémosla! 

¡armémosla! ¡ya, pronto! ¡armémosla!”Aunque él intentó 

esconder ese mismo entusiasmo que compartía con ella 

en ese momento, sólo bajó la caja y 

salió del cuarto a buscar un cuchillo y 

sus pocas herramientas que tenía para 

darse a la tarea de armarla. Así juntos 

se pusieron a armar la cuna, sin tener 

que decirse cómo hacerlo, ambos se 

siguieron. El sacó todas las empiezas, las acomodó 

como pudo por todo el piso para así poder verlas bien y 

una vez que encontró el instructivo, se lo dio a ella. 

Ella en tan sólo unos minutos lo leyó y lo estudió 

para seguir los pasos. Ella le fue diciendo a él cómo 

armarla, le decía “Tienes que sujetar la pieza A y B y 

acomodarlas en un ángulo de noventa grados, una vez 

que las tengas así en la esquina habrá una pequeña 

apertura donde podrás atornillar las esquinas, una vez 

que hagas eso habrá que repetir ese mismo paso con las 

otras seis piezas, estas serán las cuatro paredes de la 

cuna”. Conforme la armaban, repetían pasos por 

haberlos hecho mal: él por haber puesto la pieza al 

revés, o ella por haber leído un poco mal el instructivo, 

o él por haber escuchado un poco mal, a ratos 

intercambian papeles, juntos intentaban seguir el 

instructivo, ambos intentaban colocar las piezas en su 

lugar debido. 

También entre todo esto, ellos hablaban de los 

juguetes, cobijas y colores que usarían para la cuna de 

Zoe, ella le decía como va a ser niña no hay que 

imponerle el rosa como su color favorito, no hay que 

empezar a imponerle que como es mujer tiene que tener 

todo de rosa, bueno aunque es mi color favorito ella 

tiene que elegirlo por si sola, tiene que aprender a cómo 

hacer sus decisiones por si sola y enseñarle que podrá 

ser madre y cuidará de su casa en algún momento pero 

sólo si ella lo decide…le recordaremos que podrá ser 

madre y no tendrá que ser madre como una única 

opción en su vida… eso sí tendrá que aprender que ser 

borrarse la mente 

con un doctor, 

justo después de 

romper para olvidarse 

de si mismos

¡ARMÉMOSLA! ¡ARMÉMOSLA! 

madre es fundamental en la vida pero no será su único 

papel en este mundo, podrá hacer eso y más, podrá 

tener la profesión que ella decida. En eso, él la 

interrumpió con una sonrisa y le dijo ya empiezas otra 

vez con tu mismo discurso, será una princesa ya verás 

deja que nazca. Ella hizo como que no lo escuchó y 

después del comentario de él, ella empezó a hablar de 

las actividades extra escolares en las que participará 

Zoe: “Bueno, la inscribiremos en clases de fútbol desde 

chiquita, también estará en clases de arte y tendrá que 

tomar alguna clase de karate o defensa para que sepa 

como defenderse desde pequeña, también me gustaría 

que aprendiera a tocar un instrumento”. El una vez más 

la interrumpió: “Si todo eso me parece buena idea, pero 

recuerda ella lo decidirá, nosotros no podremos 

imponerle todo un régimen de actividades 

extra-escolares porque también Zoe necesitará tiempo 

para divertirse y ser una niña”. Ella una vez más hizo 

como que no lo escuchó y dijo: “Eso sí, 

jugará fútbol y todo lo demás será 

opcional, jugar un deporte es bueno para 

su salud y después de pasar tantas horas 

en la escuela le hará bien hacer alguna 

actividad física” y él le dijo: “Mira ya casi 

esta”. Una vez que terminaron de armar la cuna, y 

terminaron su inocente conversación de padres 

primerizos, los cuáles a falta de experiencia solo podían 

imaginar cómo serán cuando sean padres. 

Al terminar de armar la cuna, en ella había un 

asombro, una emoción y entusiasmo, pues ver la cuna 

ya ahí en su cuarto y tener su barriga a punto de 

reventar se daba cuenta que pronto tendría a Zoe en 

casa. Por su condición, minutos más tarde sintió unos 

mareos y nausea, en eso pasaron a la sala, se 

sentaron… él intentó hacerle sentir mejor… aunque 

sabía que no había nada en absoluto que podía hacer 

para hacerle sentir mejor. 

Una vez en la sala, él le dijo: “¿quieres ver está 

película?”, “¿Cuál?”, “Es la de, Eternal Sunshine of the 

Spotless Mind”, “Sí, aunque dicen que es lenta pero 

buena”, “Sí…algo.. sale Jim Carrey de The Mask y Kate 

Winslet de Titanic”, “A sí ponla me gusta como actúa 

Kate Winslet… Jim Carrey no tanto”, “Va entonces ahora 

la pongo… en esta película es dónde ambos por su 

cuenta van a borrarse la mente con un doctor, justo 

después de romper para olvidarse de si mismos… pero 

después de haberlo hecho se conocen otra vez y se 

vuelven a enamorar sin saber que antes se habían 

conocido y amado…”, Con una sonrisa ella le dijo: 

“Pues para qué la vemos, siempre haces eso, siempre 

me las tienes que contar antes de verlas”.

debes llevar una minifalda ya que estarás incómoda, 

bajando ó acomodando la prenda a cada rato. 

* Llevar un accesorio exclusivo para Navidad, un collar 

llamativo ó pulseras que no sean de uso cotidiano, es un 

sólo día la navidad y se permite ciertos exageraciones 

que en el día a día no se permiten. 

Si quieres recibir a Papá Noel espléndida, no 

puedes olvidarte de tu cabello! Justamente por esto te 

presentamos algunas opciones de peinados para esta

Para las que quieren llevar el pelo suelto pero con estilo,
