Advice for Latino College Students
Consejos para estudiantes la nos en colegio o universidad
La asistencia: Asis r siempre a clases es lo máximo que
puedes hacer como estudiante. Ser consistente te
ayudará a estar informado de todo lo que explique el profesor.
La disciplina: es importante que desarrolles la habilidad
de sentarte a estudiar todos los días, incluyendo el fin de
semana. El hábito forma al estudiante. Es esencial que
diligentemente hagas tu tarea no solamente a empo,
sino con empo de antelación. No te engañes a mismo
pasando el empo en las redes sociales.
Es necesario llegar el primer día a clase con el material
educa vo. Si no enes dinero, busca a una persona que
ya tenga el libro y hazle copia por lo menos al primer
capítulo. Incluso puedes hablar con tu maestro/a y
pedirle que ponga un libro en reserva para que puedas
prepararte para la clase. No entregar la tarea a empo
porque no enes el libro no es una excusa válida.
La par cipación en clase es importante,
especialmente si eres de esas
personas que se sientan en la
orilla o hasta atrás. Muchos
jóvenes la nos han
internalizado la marginalidad
y la reproducen sentándose
en las orillas. Para evitar que
el profesor con núe
ignorándote, enes que ser
ac vo par cipando en la clase,
enes que visitar al maestro o a
la maestra en sus horas de oficina
varias veces, y es imprescindible que
le envíes un correo eléctrico, explicando
algo que hayas aprendido en su clase.
La interacción con tu profesor/a te ayudará en el futuro
cuando tengas que pedirle una carta de recomendación
para un trabajo o para los estudios de postgrado.
Únete a los clubs la nos de tu universidad.
Generalmente habrá estudiantes que conozcan bien el
sistema de la universidad y podrán ayudarte en
cualquier complicación o pregunta que tengas. Júntate
con estudiantes que tengan más experiencia y que estén
en tu misma área de estudio. Vive con
estudiantes que tengan los mismos intereses
académicos que tú.
Busca empleo parcial en tu área de estudio, por
ejemplo, si quieres ser doctor, busca información en
los hospitales locales de cómo trabajar ahí
parcialmente o como ayudante.
Las redes sociales deben de ayudarte en primer lugar a
promoverte cómo una persona seria y profesional, de
lo contrario, si publicas que eres una persona fiestera,
te desacreditaras a mismo.

A endance: A ending all of your classes is the most
important thing you can do as a student. Being
consistent will help you be informed of everything the
professor explains.
Discipline: It is important to develop the ability to sit and
study everyday, including weekends. Ge ng into the
rou ne of si ng down to do your work will help you
develop good study habits. It is essen al to be diligent
about comple ng your homework, even be er,
comple ng your work ahead of me. Don’t fool yourself
by spending a lot of me on social media.
It is necessary to a end the first day of class with your
course book(s)/material(s). If you don’t have money to
purchase class materials, find a person who has the book
already and make copies of the first chapter at least. You
can also talk to the professor and ask him/her to place a
copy of the text on reserve in the library so you will be
able to complete class assignments.
Par cipa on in class is important, especially
if you are someone who prefers to sit
on the end rows or the very back.
Many young La nos have
internalized marginality and they
reproduce this by si ng on the
edges of the classroom. To
avoid the professor from
ignoring you completely you
must: be an ac ve par cipant
in class; visit him/her during
office hours o en; and send
them an e-mail explaining
something you learned in class. This
last piece of advice is crucial together with
the interac on with your professor to help you in
the future when you have to ask for a le er of
recommenda on.
Extra-Curricular Ac vi es: Join La no clubs on campus.
Generally, there will be students who are familiar with
the university system that will be able to help you with
any ques ons or concerns you may have. Join other
students who are more experienced and share your
similar area of study. Living with other students who
have similar academic interests as you will help you
establish a support system and perhaps even future job
connec ons.
Job/Volunteer: Look for a part- me job or internship
opportunity in your area of study. For example, if you
want to be a doctor, look for informa on in local
hospitals on how you can fill a part- me
posi on or volunteer.
Social Media: Using social media wisely will help
promote you as serious and professional person. On
the other hand, if you write that you are a party-goer,
this will serve only to discredit your reputa on.
