26/12 22 August 2012 To the Somerville House Community National Education Forum Earlier this week, the School Council Chairman, Mr Rob McCall, and I attended the National Independent Education Forum Influencing a Complex Future in Canberra, which is conducted biennially by the Association of Heads of Independent Schools in Australia (AHISA) and the Independent Schools Council of Australia (ISCA), both peak bodies in Australian education. The major Agenda of the Forum was the Gonski Review on funding for private schools which was released earlier this year. As has been reported in the media, the Review’s recommendations have significant implications for all independent schools across Australia, including Somerville House. The Forum was addressed by both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition regarding the Government and the Opposition’s responses to the Gonski Review and potential implications for school funding. With no definite decisions by the Government at this point in time, we are in a ‘watch and wait’ phase regarding our Commonwealth funding from 2013 onwards. At the same time, we have been advised that the Queensland Government is also considering a reduction in the level of State funding as part of their ongoing rationalisation of government spending. It is important for parents to be aware of the potential impact that a reduction in government funding at both Commonwealth and State levels has on setting of School fees for 2013 and beyond, as we develop our own School budget for next year. Community Service and Giving Back We congratulate the 350+ volunteers, including the many students, staff and parents of the Somerville House community, on the enormous achievement by the Zonta Club of Brisbane South’s Birthing Kit Assembly Day last Saturday. This year’s target of assembling 10,000 kits for women in third world countries was easily reached, along with celebrating the significant milestone of one million kits provided since the project began several years ago. Somerville House is very pleased to support the Zonta Club of Brisbane South in this important women’s cause.

To the Somerville House Community
National Education Forum
Earlier this week, the School Council Chairman, Mr Rob McCall, and I attended the National Independent
Education Forum Influencing a Complex Future in Canberra, which is conducted biennially by the Association of
Heads of Independent Schools in Australia (AHISA) and the Independent Schools Council of Australia (ISCA), both
Thank you to the Somerville House boarders, musicians and staff who represented the School so admirably at the
Co-Curriculum
CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
F A Kearney, Principal
Ms C O'Gorman
One of the things I enjoy about my job is going to visit the various sporting fixtures as the students of Somerville
House pit themselves against students from the various other QGSSSA schools. This weekend our rowers have
their big day, the Head of the River regatta. I remember last year as my heart raced with the close finishes to some
of those races, just like I could almost feel the pain when one of our netballers twisted her ankle at Netball last
weekend. My heart also swells with pride when I see our Volleyball teams doing a Jumping Jive after yet another
successful three or five-set thriller.
Now of course I’m not the one experiencing the pain or the ecstasy or the exhaustion of our athletes, I am just
sitting in the stands or on the sidelines watching. But in a very real sense they go out there each week as our
representatives, wearing the lime green for each of us, and we are proud of their efforts.
It seems to me from what our Somerville House athletes say after matches - how much they appreciate those who
make the effort to support them from the sidelines - that in a very real sense we do share in their successes and
disappointments in some small way. It is the joy of being part of a bigger team, even if we are cheering on from the
sidelines rather than competing.
This idea of someone representing us, going out there on our behalf and us sharing in the benefits also applies in
the area of our faith. The book of Hebrews tells us that Jesus is our High Priest, who has gone into the presence of
God on our behalf, offering Himself as a substitute for our sins - His life for ours. As our representative, He has run
the race of life on our behalf, but unlike us, although faced with the same temptations, He never sinned. A bit like
our representative athletes are the best among us, so Jesus, was the best, the ultimate example of how a life
should be lived, exemplifying the character and behaviour God is looking for.
This is why He was able to also die on our behalf, as our substitute. His life was perfect, and His sacrifice means
we can indeed find the mercy and grace we need when we seek it in the presence of God.
NEW STUDENT
We welcome Anna Lillig, Year 4, and her family to Somerville House and to her first Somerville House camp.
YEAR 4 CAMP
Last week I had the pleasure of joining the Year 4 students at Camp Somerset where we were engaged in
orienteering, bush cooking, low ropes and archery with the highlight being the bush dancing on Thursday night led
by Miss Hennessy.
One of the biggest challenges was faced at the end of the camp. What was it? It was folding up a sleeping bag to
get it back into a small cover bag. A great time was had by all and the students thank their teachers for their
support and encouragement through the time we were away from our normal classroom routine. Thank you to Mrs
Sewell, Miss Brunello, Mrs Reynish, Miss Hennessy, Miss Bragg and Mrs Allen-Moules.
OLYMPIC TORCHES
We were extremely fortunate to have eight torches shown to
us at our recent Junior School Assembly by Mr Bob Maggacis
and Mr Robert Innes. Both gentlemen have run with an
Olympic torch and Mr Innes gave an interesting talk to the
students about the collection he has. Did you know that the
2012 Olympic torch has 8000 holes in it? Do ask your
daughters, why. To help with the answers, we share one with
you: there were 8000 Olympic torch bearers who carried the
CHILD SAFETY HANDBOOK
Child safety concerns us all. Families and education systems aim to nurture happy, healthy, socially-adept
children. The responsibility of protecting our children from harm, and enabling them to develop into caring,
independent adults is the focus of many sections of our community, including schools and government bodies.
The Queensland Police Legacy Scheme allows for the distribution of a Child Safety Handbook to every Year 7
student in the state. This handbook is a valuable resource for students and their parents as it gives current, concise
information on a range of topics including diet, nutrition and personal care, safety in a variety of situations, bullying
(including cyber-bullying) and drug awareness, in an ‘easy-to-read format’. There is also a section on useful
contact addresses.
Over the next few weeks, our Year 7 students will be given their copies and, in Pastoral Care sessions, they will
discuss many of the issues raised in the handbook. After Homeroom teachers have completed specific sections
with their classes, the handbooks will be sent home; parents are urged to use this opportunity to discuss the
contents with their daughters.
If you have any queries regarding the handbooks and/or their content, please do not hesitate to contact either your
daughter’s Homeroom teacher, or me.
DEAN OF STUDENTS
Ms S Gilmour
WILL YOU HELP US HELP OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY AND PARENTS AROUND THE WORLD?
For many years psychologists have known the important influence parents have on their children. Unfortunately, a
lot of our research on parenting is based on children who have been neglected or not been given enough love or
protection. While this gives us a good idea of what skills we should be encouraging in parents who lack parenting
skills, we are still a little in the dark as to what good qualities in parents bring about the best outcomes for children.
To do this, we have to study a population of parents who are committed and loving parents and the associated
outcomes in their children.
Judith Locke, an experienced clinical psychologist and former teacher at Somerville House (in the early 90s),
intends to undertake this research with our School. Judith is well known to our School community, having delivered
many parenting education sessions over the past few years. Her research will involve parents from the School
completing an online survey on their parenting choices and beliefs. We will have students in Years 4 to 12
complete surveys in class time on areas such as their satisfaction with life and their social skills. Students in Prep
to Year 3 will have their teachers complete brief surveys on similar areas for their students.
This survey will be completely anonymous and you will not be required to record your name in this research.
Parent data will be matched to student data through the use of student numbers. Parents will be writing only their
daughter’s student number and no names will ever be used. The analysis will only be undertaken by Judith Locke
and she is unaware of the names that match the student numbers.
By gathering all of this data we will learn what parenting approaches, actions and beliefs are associated with what
child wellbeing factors.
At Somerville House we pride ourselves on supporting all aspects of a child’s development including assisting
parents in their important role of supporting their children. We believe in this research because it will give us some
important information about the wellbeing of our students, our parenting strengths, and any areas of opportunity.
We will also have the possibility to make a very important contribution to parenting knowledge and make sure
parenting programs are relevant to all parents, not just the neglectful ones. This will go some way in ensuring that
future parenting programs delivered at the School, and possibly around the world, are based on latest information
about modern effortful parenting approaches that are associated with the best outcomes in children.
We are also using this opportunity to clarify parents’ views on homework and assignments. We know, for many
parents, homework can be a tricky area, and we want to find out more about your experience with having your
daughter complete schoolwork at home. We will use this information in our development of policies regarding
homework and assignments for all year levels.
4

We will be including the link to the parent survey in the newsletters in the weeks of 24 August to 14 September, and
will also email parents to give them the link. This survey should take parents only 15 minutes. The survey is
anonymous and parents will be writing only their eldest child’s student number. Of course, the surveying of your
child is not compulsory, and should you not wish your daughter to complete a survey, we would ask that you
contact Mrs Gillian Cunningham at Somerville House on 3248 9295 or email gcunningham@somerville.qld.edu.au
by 27 August. Your daughter will also have the opportunity to decline participation at the time of surveying should
she choose. We intend to have the students complete these surveys during class time between 31 August and 17
September.
Somerville House will be receiving de-identified, broad results from this survey. We will then communicate the
results of this research to our Executive, teachers and parents. This may be in the form of lectures, parenting
advice sessions, or future articles in the School newsletter or magazine.
Somerville House is very proud to be a part of this important research and we would ask that you support it by
filling out the survey yourself and giving your daughter permission to be part of it as well.
HEAD OF ART
Artwork of the Week - Claire Qu, Year 9
Some of the Year 9 Art classes have recently completed a painting task
where they were asked to create an image capturing human movement
through the use of colour and pattern. This painting by Claire Qu is a fine
example of the many excellent paintings that the students have done.
Mr J Honeywill
TRAFFIC BOX PAINTING
This year, under the direction of Art Prefect, Sangeetha Badya and Art Convenor, Stephanie Randall the Year
12s wanted to take Somerville House art beyond the School and into the streets of South Brisbane. A group of
interested Year 12 students met to create a Somerville House and community inspired design that would showcase
the Captains’ theme this year, ‘reaching for the stars’.
In the last weeks of Term 2 they applied to the Council to paint the traffic box on the corner of Vulture and Allen
Streets. Upon receiving approval for the project and for their design, the students began painting during the
holidays, finishing in the first week of this term. They hope that by adding this dash of Somerville House spirit to
Brisbane roads, they will inspire the community and remind those who drive past of the importance of ‘leaping for
the stars’.
HEAD OF ENGLISH
Ms J Gardiner
It is not every day that the Queensland Solicitor General comes to visit. On Tuesday 14 August, Mr Walter
Sofronoff QC met with our Year 10 English students who are currently studying Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth.
Mr Sofronoff is an avid thespian who has acted in and directed many theatre productions. He directed an
adaptation of Macbeth at the Powerhouse Theatre in 2011 for The Caledonian Theatre Company, co-founded by
Mr Sofronoff and fellow barrister, John Selfridge.
Mr Walter Sofronoff QC with Mrs Walker and Ms Gardiner
As Year 10 students will be writing a set of Directors’
Notes based on their own imagined stage production of
the play, they were keen to get some directorial tips from
an expert. Mr Sofronoff shared his obvious passion for
‘the Scottish play’, allowing us an insight into the many
complex decisions a director must make to bring
Shakespeare’s words to life. He encouraged students to
think deeply about character motivation and the thematic
purpose of any stage version of the play. He also took us
on a ‘tour’ of the great film adaptations of Macbeth,
explaining how these influenced his approach to the
Powerhouse production. His visit was as inspiring as it
was instructive, serving to illustrate just how nourishing
literature and the arts can be.
TENNIS
Mrs S McCracken, Co-ordinator
TENNIS QGSSSA
Rebecca Bennett and Alexandra Bennett, Co-Captains
St Hilda’s offers a wonderful
environment where all four winter
fixture sports are played within the
same campus. Mrs Brookes (Head of
H&PE Department) and Mrs Hodgetts
(Head of Boarding) took advantage of
this opportunity to see all sports in
one morning, and enjoyed watching
Open Team Tennis boarders Doone
Mitchell and Maddison Morgan
playing. While the Tennis players
enjoyed the sunshine at Southport,
they also fought the elements with the
wind often whipping the ball around
the court. Special mention to
Sharleen Mishra and Annie Pullar
(Senior A Team) who came from 0-3
down to eventually win 6-3 in their
doubles match; well done to both
players for their tenacity on court. The Senior B2s played at UQ, St Lucia, while the Senior B3s enjoyed our School
courts and the view from the Pavilion, encouraged by Jemima McGrath (Year 12 boarder) cheering from the
sideline.
This week, the Somerville House Tennis family warmly welcomes Mr Joe Bennett to the coaching staff. Joe will
be coaching the Senior B1 team for the remainder of the season; the team comprising of Cassandra Catsoulis,
Catherine Crombie, Tayla Gill, Chloe Lloyd and Rosemary MacLeod demonstrated their talent against St
Hilda’s with a convincing win. We wish Joe and the Senior B1s well for the weeks ahead.
VOLLEYBALL
Mrs M Ball, Co-ordinator
VOLLEYBALL QGSSSA
Hannah George and Sally Diacaris, Co-Captains
This week saw another display of our outstanding Volleyball spirit in all year levels. We headed to the Gold Coast
for games against St Hilda’s and we came away with 3 out of 4 wins.
The Year 9s displayed great teamwork but unfortunately they did not come away with a win in this round being
defeated in a close match 2 sets to 1. Stephanie Pace demonstrated great court play throughout the entire game
and must be recognised for her great effort this week.
The Year 10s came away with another win this week, defeating St Hilda’s in a convincing win 2 – 1. Laura
Erikson was a stand out in this weekend’s games, dominating the court with her consistent serving. The Senior As
demonstrated outstanding teamwork once again this week, coming away with a 3 – 0 win, overpowering the
opposition in all aspects of the game. Eilise McAuliffe deserves a special mention as she played consistently
throughout the game. Finally, the Opens had another win this week, coming out on top with 3 – 1. Emily Bowden
played an amazing game, with consistent serving, as well as dominating at the net.
Thank you to all the spectators who made the long trip out to St Hilda’s last Saturday, all the support is greatly
appreciated.
