From the Chairman of the Board of Trustees<br />
As we conclude our 33rd year we have been reflecting on our growth and<br />
future. What began in Kevin Ellison’s Chagrin Falls back yard in 1978,<br />
serving<br />
solid<br />
a handful of students each week, has grown into an enterprise<br />
with a 47 thousand square foot facility, 35 horses, 41 full- and part-time<br />
staff members including 20 instructors, and more than 600 volunteers,<br />
serving nearly 800 students each year.<br />
<strong>Fieldstone</strong> <strong>Farm</strong> has grown because of the great need for what our<br />
unique program offers. It is likely you know someone who is enrolled in<br />
a <strong>Fieldstone</strong> program, or could be a candidate for enrollment. We serve<br />
students of all ages: very young children referred by pediatricians, older<br />
adults from assisted living programs, teens in drug treatment programs,<br />
accident victims, veterans and school-age children. Our students live<br />
with a wide range of physical, emotional and/or cognitive challenges.<br />
Some of their disabilities are clear and evident to the eye, and some are<br />
invisible to the observer. Each and every session at <strong>Fieldstone</strong> <strong>Farm</strong><br />
spirit<br />
moves a student toward improvement, and a better quality of life. In<br />
many instances, students develop skills, confidence and experience that<br />
allows them to more readily participate and contribute to society.<br />
Because Kevin Ellison understood the seismic impact of equine programming on the improvement of students’<br />
lives, his goal was to give lessons to all students who needed them, regardless of their ability to pay.<br />
What was a goal then, is now one of our guiding principles: a student is never denied services for financial<br />
victories<br />
reasons. Therefore, it is the generosity of our individual donors and the foundations that provide funding for<br />
programs, the success of our fundraising events, and the thousands of hours devoted by dedicated volunteers<br />
that allow <strong>Fieldstone</strong> <strong>Farm</strong> to thrive and grow.<br />
We all live in a world that is sometimes overwhelming in its complexity, but here is one very simple truth:<br />
when you support <strong>Fieldstone</strong> <strong>Farm</strong>, you have a direct and lasting impact on improving the quality of another<br />
person’s life. For this reason, we need you, and are enormously grateful to you. If you have not visited <strong>Fieldstone</strong><br />

Benefits of <strong>Therapeutic</strong> <strong>Riding</strong><br />
The equine programs at <strong>Fieldstone</strong> <strong>Farm</strong> are uniquely designed to meet the<br />
educational, behavioral, social and physical goals of people with disabilities.<br />

The horse’s unique, three-dimensional movement replicates the movement that<br />

the human body experiences while walking. Therefore, sitting on a horse helps<br />
to strengthen and stimulate core muscles, which often improves walking ability.<br />

Programming complements the Ohio Academic Content Standards for language<br />
arts, math and science. The result is a creative, progressive, experiential learning<br />
opportunity, which directly relates to students’ state-mandated academic goals.<br />

Psychosocial Disorders:<br />
Horses provide motivation and encouragement to riders. The relationship that<br />
develops between client and horse nurtures the development of skills such as<br />
responsibility, increased self-esteem, honesty and respect.<br />

Veterans’ Services<br />
<strong>Fieldstone</strong> <strong>Farm</strong> remains committed to honoring our country’s veterans by bringing the benefits of<br />
riding, driving and horsemanship to area military service members. For veterans recovering from warrelated<br />
injury, equine-assisted activities can provide physical, emotional and rehabilitative support,<br />
helping with the transition back to civilian and family life.<br />
This program is proudly supported by the Ohio Professional Horsemen’s Association.<br />
Volunteer Commitment<br />
<strong>Fieldstone</strong> <strong>Farm</strong> volunteers demonstrate extraordinary commitment every day: to our students, our<br />
beloved therapy horses, the Gaitway school and to each other. Through selfless dedication and hard<br />
work, our volunteers contribute the workforce that runs our classes and improves our facility. In <strong>2011</strong>,<br />
650 volunteers donated 22,190 hours to our program by assisting our students, helping on committees,<br />
volunteering for special events and of course, working with our horses. The Independent Sector’s current<br />
value of one hour of volunteer service is $21.36, making our volunteers’ efforts worth $473,978 to<br />
the organization.<br />
Therapy Horse Spotlight<br />
Have you ever wondered what goes into becoming a <strong>Fieldstone</strong> <strong>Farm</strong> therapy horse? It’s not as easy as<br />
you might think. In <strong>2011</strong>, 109 phone calls were received from potential horse donors. Of that number,<br />
26 horses were screened at their home barns. From those visits, 13 horses were brought to <strong>Fieldstone</strong><br />
for the trial horse phase, a 6–8 week time period when staff and EMTs (Equine Management Team, a<br />
group of volunteers who meet weekly to help with various training aspects of the herd) work with the<br />
horse to ensure compatibility with our program and student population. From this group, seven horses<br />
were accepted into the program. And you thought your job interview was tough! At year-end, <strong>Fieldstone</strong><br />
<strong>Farm</strong> owned 36 carefully selected horses.<br />
