Cierto día, Antonio, se encontró con mucho tráfico, 

y notó que un señor conducía apresuradamente, 

cortándole el paso a todo el que podía al tratar de 

abrirse paso entre los vehículos. Cuando se aproximó 

al automóvil de Antonio, se le atravesó de una manera 

tan brusca, que por poco ocurre una accidente. 

En ese momento, Antonio tuvo deseos de insultarlo 

e impedirle el paso, pero luego pensó: - ¡El pobre! 

Está tan nervioso y apurado...¡Sabrá Dios si tiene un 

problema serio y necesita llegar cuanto antes a su 

destino!.. Con estos pensamientos, decidió cederle el 

paso. Al llegar a casa, Antonio recibió la noticia de que 

su hijo de tres años había sufrido un grave accidente 

y había sido llevado al hospital por su esposa. 

Al llegar, al hospital, su esposa corrió a sus brazos y 

lo tranquilizó diciéndole. Gracias a Dios todo está bien. 

El médico llegó justo a tiempo para salvar la vida de 

nuestro hijo; ya está fuera de peligro. Aliviado, Antonio 

pidió hablar con el médico para agradecérselo. 

Cuál sería su sorpresa cuando vio que el médico era 

ese señor nervioso y apurado a quien le había cedido 

el paso una hora antes. El mundo necesita mas 

personas amables, serviciales y comprensivas, 

Aprendamos a aceptar distintos pensamientos 

o acciones, seamos más tolerantes, 

porque siempre existe un motivo. 

One day Antonio, found himself with a lot of traffic, 

and noticed that a man was driving hastily, cutting 

people off every time he saw a chance to break 

through the vehicles. When he approached Antonio 

car, he went through such a rough manner, that a 

crash almost occurred. At that time, Antonio had 

desires to insult and block his way, but then he 

thought -Poor him! He's so nervous and rushed… 

Only God knows if he has a serious problem and 

needs to reach his destination as soon as possible!.. 

With these thoughts, he decided to give way. When 

he got home, Antonio received the news that his 

three year old son had suffered a serious accident and 

had been taken to hospital by his wife. Arriving at the 

hospital, his wife ran into his arms reassuring him. 

Thank God all is well. The doctor arrived just in time 

to save the life of our son; he is now out of danger. 

Relieved, Antonio asked to speak with the doctor to 

thank him. What was to his surprise when he saw 

that the doctor was the nervous and rushed man who 

he had given way to in traffic over an hour earlier. 

The world needs more friendly, helpful and caring 

people, learn to accept different thoughts or actions, 

be more tolerant, because there is always a reason.

Mayra Guzmán, Es Trabajadora 

Communitaria para Valle de Salinas y el 

Sur del Condado de Monterey.Ella es una 

intermediaria en la comunidad a favor 

de los niños, nace en Araro Michoacán, 

México. Ella comparte su historia de cómo 

llega a los Estados Unidos. “Mis padres 

me cruzaron junto con mi hermana, 

cuando yo tenía 7 años de edad. Llegué a 

Pescadero California, aprendí a hablar el 

inglés cuando comencé la escuela, me 

tomó tiempo. Los primeros 7 años de mi 

vida fui criada por mi abuela materna en 

Michoacán. Somos 7 hermanos, 5 

mujeres, y 2 hombres. Mis padres 

trabajaron muy duro por traernos de 

México para estar juntos. Mis padres se 

esforzaron por hacernos residentes 

legales y nos brindaron la oportunidad de 

recibir una educación mejor y la 

oportunidad de ejercer carreras. Me hice 

ciudadana en el año 1997 antes de 

graduarme de la secundaria”. Ella asiste 

a la primaria en Pescadero Elementary, 

y Pescadero High School, y a la 

Universidad de la Bahía de Monterey.

Nos daba pena decir 

donde vivíamos y por 

qué. Muchas veces 

nos pasábamos solas 

el tiempo en la 

escuela nueva por pena y miedo. 

La experiencia de la separación de mi 

hermanito y mis padres fue muy dolorosa. 

Mis padres se esforzaron para 

recuperarnos a todos y por mantener a la 

familia unidad. Al fin pudimos regresar a 

casa.” Esta experiencia tiene una gran 

impacto en esta mujer tan fuerte ya que 

ayuda a familias en situaciones similares. 

Ella también comparte otro aspecto 

impactante de su vida. Ella dice, 

“Fui madre soletera a los 14 años. 

Fue un tiempo muy difícil en mi 

adolescencia, porque tuve que ser padre 

y madre. Con mi esfuerzo y el de mis 

padres, me hice responsable de 

mantener un trabajo en el campo 

mientras seguía mis estudios. Mantuve 

dos trabajos para poder darle a mi hija 

lo que necesitaba. Mis padres nunca 

aprobaron de que yo recibiera ayuda del 

gobierno. Para ellos trabajar duro para 

obtener lo que uno necesita era los 

más importante, ese esfuerzo de ser 

responsable siempre fue inculcado en 

nosotros.” Así, su deseo de salir adelante 

y recibir una educación para poder darle 

una vida mejor a su hija la impulsa a 

seguir estudiando. Ella explica, “Me 

enfoque en mis estudios y en sacar a mi 

hija adelante.” 

A pesar de su instinto perseverante 

su familia una vez más sufre una 

tragedia. Ella comparte esta experiencia 

tan personal, “Una noche dolorosa mi 

hermano mayor llegó a la casa, mientras

vano. Por más difícil y dolorosos 

que sean, no hay que dejar que 

la obscuridad venza el alma.”

muchísimo. Mi hija 

nunca se quejaba. 

La universidad de la 

Bahía de Monterey me 

apoyó muchísimo con mi hija. Estudié 

Social Behavioral Sciences.” Una vez que 

termina su educación y recibe una 

licenciatura en Ciencias Sociales de 

Conducta trabaja para el centro de Crisis 

Para Mujeres como Coordinadora del 

Equipo Respondiente a Abuso Infantil y 

Violación. Además ella explica, “al igual fui 

Consejera para sobrevivientes de 

violencia doméstica, y entrenadora de 

clases para padres.” Después de esta 

experiencia llega a ser Trabajadora 

Comunitaria para El Programa Crianza y 

Adopción para el Condado de Monterey. 

Ella explica su labor, “Mi trabajo es 

proveer apoyo a familias entrando al 

sistema de protección para niños. 

También me enfoco en trabajar con los 

medios de comunicación para poder 

buscar apoyo para niños en cuidado de 

Crianza Temporal, y para encontrar 

nuevas familias de crianza y adopción en 

nuestra comunidad. Nuestra prioridad es 

mantener a los niños con familia o 

personas concedidas, pero si no se puede 

entonces los colocamos en hogares de 

crianza. En este momento se encuentran 

más de 300 niños(as) en colocaciones 

con familias, o hogares de crianza en el 

Condado de Monterey.” Indudablemente, 

las impactantes experiencias de Mayra la 

convierten en una mujer aún más fuerte 

que decide seguir adelante para poder 

ayudar a su comunidad, especialmente a 

todas las familias que por un motivo u 

otro son separadas. Esta gran historia 

que Mayra comparte es un 

ejemplo más de cómo el 

seguir nuestros sueños vale 

la pena porque se pueden 

hacer realidad. Ella dice, 

“mi inspiración son mis 

hijos, por ellos sigo 

adel ant e. U na g ran 

motivación es la memoria 

de mi amiga, que en paz 

descanse. A ella no se le dio 

la oportunidad de poder ver 

crecer a su hija y seguir sus 

sueños. Yo estoy aquí 

t r a t a n d o d e l o g r a r 

superarme como madre, 

mujer y profesional.” 

Como una gran filosofía 

en su vida ella comparte, 

“Los golpes de la vida no 

son en vano. Por más difícil 

y dolorosos que sean, no 

hay que dejar que la obscuridad venza el 

alma.” Por último ella dice, “todas mis 

experiencias buenas y dolorosas me han 

hecho la persona fuerte de hoy. Y por eso 

estoy en esta profesión. Ayudar a familias 

y ser parte de su crecimiento y 

reunificación, me da mucho gusto y 

ánimo”. 

Por este gran deseo de sanar a 

familias en nuestra comunidad, por seguir 

adelante luchando por sus sueños a 

pesar de la adversidad que ha enfrentado 

en la vida, Mayra es un claro ejemplo de 

motivación social, a Paloma Revista nos 

alegra, felicitarla y reconocerla por 

siempre como nuestro Orgullo Hispano.

balaceaba por todos 

lados, allí estaba mi hija

hermanitos. Todo pasó

La abrace por última ves 

mientras la ambulancia 

llegaba. Fueron unos 

años muy obscuros tuve 

que ser testigo en el 

tribunal de mi hermano. 

Esa noche perdí a mi 

mejor amiga y a un 

hermano. Mi amiga murió 

a los 16 años de edad y él fue encarce- 

Ella comparte: “Una etapa en mi 

niñez la cual fue muy dolorosa. A la edad 

de 10 años fuimos puestos en Cuidado de 

Crianza Temporal bajo la protección de 

menores en el condado. Lo más triste que 

aún me duele y el recuerdo nunca se me 

olvida. Lo agrio que sentí aquella noche 

cuando nos separaron a todos. Mis 

hermanas y yo nos llevaron en un carro 

extraño y nos dijeron que todo estaría lado a los 18 años. Estas dos etapas de 

mejor, que nos ayudarían. Cuando mi 

adolescencia y juventud 

buscaba a mi hermanito me acuerdo que son las que me llevaron a seguir siendo 

no lo miraba por ningún lado. A él lo fuerte y a salir adelante.” Efectivamente, 

mandaron a otro hogar de crianza no estas dos etapas tan dolorosas hacen 

de Mayra una mujer fuerte. Ella consi- 

pudimos verlo, y lo mirábamos en visitas 

supervisadas. Se me parte el alma de gue superar esto y logra usar positivamente

Mayra Guzman, Is Community Liaison 

for Salinas and South County. She is 

intermediary in the community for 

children, born in Araro Michoacán, 

Mexico. She shares her story of how she 

arrives to the United States. "My parents 

came with my sister and I when I was 

7 years old. I arrived to Pescadero 

California. I learned to speak English 

when I started school it took time. The 

first 7 years of my life my grandmother 

in Michoacán raised me. We are 7 

brothers, 5 women and 2 men. My 

parents worked very hard to bring us 

together. My parents worked hard to 

make us legal residents and 

gave us the opportunity to 

receive a better education 

and the opportunity to 

pursue our careers. I became 

a citizen in 1997 

before graduating from high 

school." Mayra attended Pescadero 

Elementary school and Pescadero High 

School, and later on went to receive a 

degree in Behavioral Social Sciences at 

the University of Monterey Bay. 

Prior to this, she shares a 

painful experience from her childhood: 

"A part of my childhood that was very 

painful was at the age of 10. We were 

placed in Foster Care under the 

protection of minors in the county. 

The saddest thing is that it still hurts and 

I never forget this memory. It was bitter 

when we were parted that night. 

My sisters and I were in a strange car 

and they told us that everything would be 

better they would help us. I was looking 

for my brother I remember looking 

anywhere but could not see him. 

He was sent to another foster home and 

we could see him at supervised visits. 

It breaks my heart to know that he was 

alone in a house without us. And in that 

house they mistreated my little brother. 

It breaks my soul to know that we could 

not be with him to care for him. 

The foster home where my sisters and 

I were place was with a very nice family. 

They were an African-American family 

that did everything to make us feel as 

part of their family. It was hard to be in a 

big city, new school, and try to make new 

friends. At the time, it was sad to say 

where we lived and why. Many times 

we spent time alone in the new school 

b e c a u s e w e w e r e a f r a i d . 

The experience of being separated from 

my brother and my parents was very 

painful. My parents struggled to keep 

the family united, but at last we could 

go home.” The painful experience has a 

great impact on Mayra and leads her to 

help families in similar situations. 

Mayra shares another aspect of 

her life. She says, "I was a single mother 

from the age 14. It was a very difficult 

time in my teens because I had to be a 

father and mother. With great effort and 

my parents, I became responsible for 

maintaining a job working in the fields 

while continuing my education. I had two 

jobs to give my daughter what she 

needed. My parents never approved that 

I receive government assistance. 

For them to work hard is what one needs 

to do and this sense of responsibility was 

always instilled in us.” Her desire to 

succeed and get an education to give 

her daughter a better life becomes the 

driving force to continue studying. 

Despite her persistence her 

family suffers another tragedy. She 

shares a very heartfelt experience, 

"One painful night my older brother came 

home while my friend was visiting (which 

was his then ex- girlfriend). He came 

armed and shot my friend in cold blood. 

I ran to get help while he shot 

everywhere; my daughter, their daughter, 

and my brothers were all there. It all 

happened so fast. My friend did not 

survived. I embraced her as the 

ambulance arrived. Those were very dark 

years, as I had to be a witness in my 

brother’s trial. That night I lost my best 

friend and a brother. My friend died at 

the age of 16 and my brother was

vain. As difficult and painful as 

they are, we must not let the 

darkness defeat the soul”.

age of 18. These 

two stages of my 

adolescence and 

youth are what led 

me to remain 

strong and move 

forward.” Indeed, these two very painful 

stages of Mayra made her much 

stronger. She was able to overcome this, 

she positively used these experiences, 

today to help families overcome these 

crisis’. 

Mayra excels even more by the 

following: She says: "After finishing high 

school I moved to Monterey. I was 

accepted into the University of Monterey 

Bay. I remember I took my daughter to 

night classes with me, because I had no 

one who could take care of her. 

It became very difficult to walk in an 

unfamiliar city with no family nearby. 

I taught myself to ride the bus and I 

walked a lot. My daughter never 

complained. The University Monterey Bay 

supported me very much. I studied Social 

Behavioral Sciences.” Once Mayra finish 

her education and got a degree in Social 

Behavior Sciences she worked for the 

Women's Crisis Center as Respondent 

Team Coordinator for Child Abuse and 

Rape. She adds, "I was also a counselor 

for survivors of domestic violence, and 

coach for parenting classes." After this 

experience, she becomes works for The 

Parenting and Adoption Program for 

Monterey County. She explains her work; 

"My job is to provide support for families 

entering the child protection system. 

I also focused on working with the media 

to seek support for children in Foster 

care, and to find new foster care and 

adoption in our community. Our priority 

is to keep children with family or persons 

granted, but if we can’t we then place 

them in foster care. Currently more than 

300 children are placed in foster homes 

in Monterey County.” Undoubtedly, the 

shocking experiences Mayra faced at an 

early age made her an even stronger 

woman who decides to pursue a career 

to help her community, especially 

families. This great story that Mayra 

shares is an example of how following 

ones dreams is well worth as they do 

come true. She shares, "My children are 

my inspiration, I continue on for them. 

A major motivation is the memory of my 

friend, rest in peace. She was not given 

the opportunity to see her daughter grow 

up and follow her dreams. I am trying to 

better myself as a mother, wife and 

professional.” She shares a great 

philosophy in her life, “The blows of life 

are not in vain. As difficult and painful as 

they are, we must not let the darkness 

d e f e a t t h e s o u l ” . 

.” She also adds, “all my good and 

painful experiences have made me a 

stronger person today. That's why I'm in 

this profession. Helping families and to 

be part of their growth and reunification, 

gives me great pleasure and 

encouragement.” 

For this great desire to heal 

families in our community and continue 

to fight for her dreams despite the 

struggles and adversity she has faced 

throughout her life she is clearly an 

example of social motivation, to Paloma

and recognize her always as our Orgullo 

Hispano.

La revista Forbes y una página web 

especializada en la búsqueda de empleo 

en Estados Unidos publicó la lista de 

las que son las mejores profesiones 

del año. Como resultado se crea un 

listado con los 10 mejores empleos, 

los que este año fueron: 

1) Matemático: Es un profesionista 

en los números. En Estados Unidos 

se encuentra entre los empleos 

mejor pagados con un sueldo 

promedio anual de US $101.360 

(unos $55 millones en moneda 

chilena) y un crecimiento de empleo 

proyectado a de 23% para los próximos 

ocho años. 

2) Profesor universitario: El objetivo de este profesorado 

es completar la formación que brindan otras carreras 

universitarias brindando los conocimientos, las habilidades y 

el entrenamiento para un adecuado ejercicio de la docencia 

en disciplinas afines a su campo profesional. Su sueldo 

promedio anual es de US$68.970 (unos $38 millones) 

y crecimiento de empleo estimado en 19% para los 

próximos años. 

3) Estadístico: Se dedica a mostrar, 

una medida cuantitativa, derivada de un 

conjunto de datos de una muestra,con el 

objetivo de estimar o inferir características 

de una población o modelo estadístico 

Tienen un sueldo promedio anual de 

$75.560 ($42 millones) y el crecimiento 

de empleo previsto de 27%. 

4) Experto en seguros; Es un experto en 

seguros está para ayudarte y apoyarte 

en todo lo que necesites para adquirir un 

seguro. El salario promedio anual es de 

US$93.680 ($51 millones) y el crecimiento 

de empleo previsto es de 26%, pues según las 

estadísticas la mayoría de la población 

estadounidense se interesa en los seguros de salud. 

5) Otorrinolaringólogo: Es el especialista medico que se 

encarga, de la prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento, tanto 

médico como quirúrgico, de las enfermedades de su sueldo 

promedio anual es de US$69.720 ($39 millones) y el 

crecimiento de empleo de 34% por el envejecimiento de la 

población. 

6) Dentista: Es el especialista que se dedica 

profesionalmente al cuidado y tratamiento de las 

enfermedades de los dientes. El salario promedio de un 

higienista dental –asistente especializado en promoción y 

educación de la salud bucal- llega a $70.210 (US$39 

millones) y crecimiento de empleo de 33%. 

7) Ingeniero de software: Es aquella disciplina que se ocupa 

del desarrollo, la operación y el mantenimiento del software 

o programas informáticos. Tienen un promedio de sueldo 

anual es de US$93.350 ($52 millones) y un crecimiento de 

empleo previsto de 22%. 

8) Analista informático. El salario promedio anual es de 

US$79.680 ($44 millones) y un crecimiento de empleo de 

25%. 

9) Terapeuta ocupacional: Es el arte y la ciencia de saber 

dirigir la respuesta de los hombres hacia la actividad ideal... 

El salario promedio anual es de US$75.400 ($42 millones) 

y el crecimiento de empleo previsto es de 29%. 

10) Fonoaudiólogo: Es un profesional de la salud que se 

dedica al estudio y análisis de las estructuras orales y 

auditivas de una persona. El salario promedio anual es de 

US$69.870 ($38 millones) y el crecimiento de empleo es 

del 19%. 

¿Y porqué el estudio? Simplemente porque es la herramienta 

que nos fortalecerá tanto por dentro, como por fuera. 

Es lo que nos permitirá defendernos, ganarnos nuestro espacio 

en la sociedad que vivimos, simplemente por eso.

Conmemorar el amor a los padres cada tercer domingo 

de Junio, aunque esta ahora tradición varia en la fecha 

en el mundo. Porque se a convertido en una fecha 

importante de reconocer el cariño y respeto que se tiene

Cuando una mujer 

llamada Sonora Smart 

Dodd quiso homenajear a su padre, Henry Jackson 

Smart. Un veterano de la guerra civil. Henry en viudo 

cuando su esposa (la madre de Sonora Smart Dodd) 

murió en el parto de su sexto hijo Henry Jackson se 

hizo cargo de sus seis hijos el los crio y educó en una 

granja rural en el estado de Washington. Sonora 

Smart se sentía muy orgullosa de Henry, su padre, al 

que consideraba todo un ejemplo a seguir. Así que 

propuso la fecha del nacimiento de su progenitor, 

el 19 de junio, para celebrar el Día del Padre. La idea 

de instituir un Día del Padre fue acogida con entusiasmo 

por muchas personas en diversos condados y ciudades. 

Pero fue sólo hasta 1924 cuando el presidente Calvin 

Coolidge apoyó la idea de establecer un día nacional del 

padre. En 1966 el presidente Lyndon Johnson firmó una 

proclamación que declaraba cada tercer domingo de 

junio como Día del Padre en América. 

En Estados Unidos, Oficialmente, la fiesta del día del 

padre es en agradecimiento por el cuidado, la educación, 

la crianza y el amor que el padre le regala al hijo 

entonces solo falta algo: ”FELIZ DIA DEL PADRE”.

manifestación llamaban a esa multitud 

“ignorante”. Estos observadores criticaban 

a los que salían a las calles a protestar por 

un descontento, exigiendo cambio. Estos 

observadores, los que no salieron a las calles a 

protestar, los que observaron desde su computadora, 

calle, celular o televisión, los que en conversaciones 

virtuales y de carne y hueso llamaban ignorantes una 

y otra vez a todos esos valientes que salieron a las 

calles con sus familias pidiendo cambio. 

Estos observadores sin saber ni conocer el 

significado de dicha palabra los llamaban ignorantes 

como si ellos fuesen los poseedores de un saber.

If this is the case, then it seems that the 

protesters were in the know and no longer wanted to 

ignore the injustice taking place in the streets, which 

is why they marched for justice, while the observers 

were unaware of the situation while 

they chose to remain in the not knowing.

Chapter 3: Treasure Chest

At times, or from time to time, I enjoy reading all forms of 

writing, even my own. Even if these things I write have not been 

published. They teach me about myself, of whom I once was, 

years ago, and continue to be. They teach me or remind me of 

the things that were once important to me or of things that were 

dire, unresolved or difficult. In about 2007, I wrote the following, 

not sure why nor how, but I did. It reads: “At times, I feel as if I 

am digging and digging by the shore looking for a treasure while, 

the strong current of the waves push the wet moist sand back in 

the hole I dig in, searching. I keep digging and digging, continuing 

the same monotonous motion like the hamster in the spinning 

wheel. We are both aware of the arbitrary activity, but continue 

performing it, to kill time instead of our self from the monotony. 

Perhaps, I am looking for this treasure in the wrong spot. Should I 

move to the south? Jump on a boat, and let the ocean push me, 

and take me away until it stops, stopping me, telling me where I 

need to dive, down, into, and dig for the treasure. Maybe, I need 

to move my search to where I know the treasure can be? 

Why I am afraid of what the sea has for me? Am I afraid 

of getting wet, Afraid of tasting the salty water that can pull me 

down? Until, I drown. Maybe, I don’t want to search, find, 

and open this treasure chest. Am I afraid I might drown in this 

search? Afraid I might find the treasure full of salty 

disappointment or sadness? Drowning my eyes with this salty 

water that is too familiar. Every time I envision how this journey in 

the sea can be or should be I always end up tasting the salty 

water that runs out of me, giving me the taste of what the 

solution brings. Other times, I wonder why this treasure doesn’t 

find me; it’s hidden in the deep blue sea of salty water, sitting 

their passively waiting for someone to discover it. If the treasure 

wants to be discovered, then why doesn’t it sit closer to its 

hopeful discoverer; who is waiting, digging by the shore along the 

coast? Why does the discoverer have to discover? Why can’t it 

be discovered? It’s tiring for him to discover everything it knows 

all on his own. Did the treasure ever think that one day the 

discoverer was going to get tired of discovering on its own? The 

discoverer was never given the help, support, or love he needed 

in life? It seems, as if, the discoverer only got a half full treasure 

chest, which is why he searches for the other half. There are so 

many questions I have for you. If you only knew how much I have 

needed you, missed you, and wanted to know you. I have never 

used, nor wanted the word papá in my vocabulary; it has never 

existed just like you have never existed in my life. It does not 

mean I have never needed a papá in my life.

Exposición de los Niños a la Violencia 

La Alianza Comunitaria para la Seguridad y la Paz ( CASP ) es 

una colaboración de más de 50 agencias como organizaciones 

de base comunitaria, los jefes de departamento del condado de 

Monterey, Agencias del ley, la Ciudad de Salinas, y las 

instituciones educativas. Estamos dedicados a reducir la 

violencia en la Ciudad de Salinas y todo el Condado de 

Monterey. Muchos de los programas y acciones de CASP 

operan bajo la campaña Para Nuestro Futuro, en honor de 

proporcionar un futuro mejor para nuestros hijos. Una reciente 

campaña desarrollada por el Comité de Prevención de CASP 

tiene como objetivo reducir la exposición de los niños a 

l a v i o l e n c i a a t r a v é s d e l a e d u c a c i ó n . 

Tenemos la suerte de que en el condado de Monterey muchos 

están trabajando en esta misma meta incluyendo Juntos 

Podemos, Consejo de Niños del Condado de Monterey, el 

Consejo de Prevenir Abuso de Niños, y CASP. La razón detrás 

de esto, además del imperativo moral, es la montaña de 

evidencia científica que documenta los efectos de la exposición 

d e l o s n i ñ o s a l a v i o l e n c i a : 

" Una experiencia de la violencia puede llevar a la física 

duradera, mental y daño moral, si el niño es víctima directa o 

testigo. Los niños expuestos a la violencia son más propensos a 

sufrir de problemas de apego, conducta regresiva, la ansiedad 

y la depresión, y de tener problemas de agresión y conducta. 

Otros problemas relacionados con la salud, así como los 

problemas académicos y cognitivos, la delincuencia y la 

participación en el bienestar de los niños y de los sistemas de 

justicia de menores, también están asociados con experiencias 

de violencia. [ 1 ], [ 2 ], [ 3 ] A pesar de la violencia de la 

comunidad que los niños no directamente testigo ha 

demostrado que afectan negativamente a las capacidades 

del niño de atención [ 4 ] y el rendimiento cognitivo. [ 5 ] " 

El año pasado los miembros del Comité de Prevención, bajo del 

liderazgo de los Co-Presidentes Shari Hastey y Comandante de 

la Policía Sheldon Bryant, han sido la creación de una campaña 

de los medios de comunicación educativa para limitar la 

exposición de los niños a la violencia. Esta campaña se originó a 

partir de las discusiones de ver a sus padres llevar a sus hijos a 

la escena del crimen y ver las consecuencias de los incidentes 

violentos. La primera fase de esta campaña es una carta de dos 

medios de comunicación a todo color del tamaño aproximado de 

una tarjeta y se ha diseñado para distribución en la escena del 

crimen por agentes de la policía de Salinas. La tarjeta se puede 

llevar en los bolsillos uniformes. La campaña se centrará en los 

niños en los perímetros escena del crimen, las llamadas de 

violencia doméstica, y en la escena de accidentes. La tarjeta, 

en inglés y español, contiene los recursos de salud mental y 

de educación relacionados. Un número de teléfono para el 

departamento del Salud del comportamiento del Condado de 

Monterey está incluido y hay un enlace a 

l o s r e c u r s o s e n l í n e a a d i c i o n a l e s . 

No somos la única comunidad en el país luchando con el tema 

de la exposición de los niños a la violencia. Una campaña 

mediática que está destinado a educar a los padres y tutores 

sobre los efectos negativos de este problema es una mejor 

práctica reconocida a nivel nacional para la prevención de la 

violencia. Las tarjetas son un componente de lo que se necesita 

para ser una campaña mucho más amplia formada por prensa, 

televisión, radio y publicidad exterior. Una campaña de esta 

magnitud y el impacto son caros pero sabemos que puede ser 

eficaz. Nuestra campaña actual era barata y confió en 

donaciones. Objetivo a largo plazo de nuestro comité es poder 

ampliar esta campaña en el futuro con el fin de tener un 

impacto significativo y en última instancia, romper los ciclos 

de violencia que hacen caer a muchos de nuestros jóvenes.

Children’s Exposure to Violence 

The Community Alliance for Safety and Peace (CASP) is a 

collaborative of over 50 agencies involving community based 

 

organizations, Monterey County department heads, Law 

enforcement agencies, the City of Salinas, and educational 

institutions. We are dedicated to reducing violence in the City 

of Salinas and throughout Monterey County. Many of CASP’s 

programs and actions operate under the For Our Future 

campaign, in honor of providing a better future for our children. 

One recent campaign developed by the CASP Prevention 

Committee is aimed at reducing Children’s Exposure 

to Violence through education. 

We are fortunate that in Monterey County many are working on 

this same goal including the Monterey County Children’s Council, 

the Child Abuse Prevention Council, and CASP. The reason 

behind this, besides the moral imperative, is the mountain of 

scientific evidence documenting the effects of 

Children’s Exposure to Violence: 

“An experience of violence can lead to lasting physical, mental, 

and emotional harm, whether the child is a direct victim or a 

witness. Children who are exposed to violence are more likely 

to suffer from attachment problems, regressive behavior, 

anxiety, and depression, and to have aggression and 

conduct problems. Other health-related problems, as well as 

academic and cognitive problems, delinquency, and 

involvement in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, 

are also associated with experiences of violence.[1],[2],[3] 

Even community violence that children do not directly witness 

has been shown to affect negatively children's attention 

abilities[4] and cognitive performance. [5]” 

Over the past year members of the Prevention Committee, under 

the leadership of Co-Chairs Shari Hastey and Police Commander 

Sheldon Bryant, have been creating an educational media 

campaign to limit children’s exposure to violence. This campaign 

originated from discussions of seeing parents bringing their 

children to crime scenes and viewing the aftermath of violent 

incidents. The first phase of this campaign is a two sided full 

color media about the size of an index card and is designed for 

distribution at crime scenes by Salinas’s police officers. The card 

will be carried in their uniform pockets. The campaign will focus 

on children at crime scene perimeters, domestic violence calls, 

and at accident scenes. The card, printed in English and 

Spanish, contains related educational and mental health 

resources. A phone number for Monterey County Behavioral 

Health is included and there is a link to additional online 

resources 

We are not the only community in the country grappling with the 

issue of children’s exposure to violence. A media campaign that 

is meant to educate parents and guardians on the negative 

effects of this problem is a nationally recognized best practice 

for violence prevention. The cards are one component of what 

needs to be a much larger campaign made up of print, 

television, radio and outdoor advertising. A campaign of this size 

and impact is expensive but we know it can be effective. 

Our current campaign was inexpensive and relied on donations. 

Our committee’s long term goal is to be able to expand this 

campaign in the future in order to have a significant impact 

and ultimately break the cycles of violence that entrap 

many of our youth.

GRUPO DE ORACION 

Qué es un grupo de oración? 

Un grupo de personas: - Donde todos tienen espacio, palabra, tarea. 

Que se reúnen para hacer un camino de encuentro con Dios.- Llamados 

por el Espíritu- En el nombre de Jesús, que garantiza su presencia en 

medio de ellos (Mt 18,19-10).- Aprenden a decir: Padre nuestro. 

- En comunión con la Iglesia (CEC 2689).Y que sienten la necesidad de 

dar gratis lo que gratuitamente han recibido. El don se convierte en tarea 

eclesial. El grupo de oración está llamado a convertirse en comunidad, 

si está siempre como grupo de oración, es como una hemorragia, 

hay que pararla. 

¿De qué se trata el grupo de oración? 

El grupo ofrece la cercanía y el apoyo de los demás para descubrir la 

dimensión comunitaria de la vida cristiana, donde cada hermano y 

hermana es un don. Es lo que Santa Teresa llama: "hacernos espaldas". 

Un signo de los tiempos. Abundan los grupos comprometidos, con buena 

representación de laicos. Es un regalo del Espíritu a la Iglesia. Se reúnen 

en un lugar, y el Espíritu les une el alma. Juntos escuchan la Palabra de 

Dios. Dejan que la vida de Dios pase de unos a otros en un clima de 

alegría. Comparten los dones, perseveran en estos encuentros 

y el Señor los bendice. 

¿A qué llama Dios a cada persona? 

Dios llama incansablemente a cada persona al encuentro misterioso 

con El. La oración acompaña toda la historia de la salvación como una 

llamada recíproca entre Dios y el hombre. El grupo se coloca en el plano 

de la gracia y se sabe habitado por el misterio de Dios. El Espíritu realiza 

la unidad en el encuentro. Desaparecen los protagonismos personales. 

No es suficiente hablar de Jesús, hay que hablar con Jesús primero. 

(Jeremias1:9).Entonces extendió su mano y me tocó la boca, diciéndome: 

«En este momento pongo mis palabras en tu boca. Que nuestra adoración 

sea auténtica porque sale del corazón. El mejor ejemplo de ello es 

Ananías que sólo aparece dos veces mencionado en la Biblia, pero qué 

importante fue para la conversión de Pablo. En esa obediencia al Señor, 

él benefició a toda la iglesia. 

¿Para quién es, quien puede estar en un grupo de oración? 

La oración es para todos los hijos de Dios, sin hacer distinciones entre 

buenos y malos pues el único perfecto es Jesucristo. 

La oración es para el pueblo de Dios que comparte la misión de Jesucristo 

y se deja guiar por El Espíritu Santo (Jn 14:12,13). 

¿Qué se necesita para participar en un grupo de oración? 

Solamente, escuchar el llamado que se nos hace, en Nombre de 

Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, y venir a la oración comunitaria: 

“Mira que estoy a la puerta y llamo”(Apo 3:21) 

¿Quién dirige un grupo de oración? 

Es nuestro Señor Jesucristo quien dirige, a través de El Espíritu Santo, 

y nos lleva a alabar y glorificar a nuestro Padre Dios. Pero también se 

olvidan de ellos mismos para alabar a Dios, usando alabanzas, 

reflexionando pasajes bíblicos y viviendo el evangelio diariamente en la 

comunidad. “Predica con el ejemplo y si es necesario habla” (Padre Pio). 

¿Es muy importante que tenga experiencia? 

"Nuestro mundo hace más caso a los testigos que a los maestros" (Pablo VI). 

¿Qué es el crecimiento? El grupo está siempre en movimiento necesita 

crecer, desarrollarse, no se trata de que el grupo haga oración, sino que 

la oración haga grupo, haga comunidad, y es necesario crecer en la fe 

para el servicio de Dios. 

Propósito del mes: Este mes reza, platica con Dios un momentito todas las 

mañanas y todas las noches- Trata de vivir todo tu día pensando que Dios 

está junto a ti, que te ve y te escucha siempre, pregúntale que quiere de ti 

y cual es tu misión.

PRAYER GROUP 

What is a prayer group? 

A group of persons:- Where all have space word task. Coming 

together to make a path to meeting God - Called by the Spirit-In the 

name of Jesus, which guarantees his presence in their midst 

(Mt 18.19-10) - Learn to say... Our Father 

- In communion with the Church (CEC 2689). And they feel the need to 

give away what they have received for free. The gift becomes 

ecclesial task. The prayer group is bound to become a community, 

if it is always as a group prayer it is like a bleeding that has to stop. 

What is the prayer group about? 

The group offers the closeness and support of others to discover the 

community dimension of Christian life, with each brother and sister is 

a gift. It is what Santa Teresa calls "having each others back." 

A sign of the times. Committed groups, with good representation 

of lay abound. It is a gift from the Spirit to the Church. 

They gather in one place, and the Spirit unites their souls. Together 

hear the Word of God. They let the life of God through each other in an 

atmosphere of joy. They share the gifts, 

persevere in these meetings and the Lord blesses. 

What God calls each person to? 

God tirelessly calls each person to that mysterious encounter with Him 

Prayer accompanies the entire history of salvation as a 

reciprocal call between God and man. The group is placed in the plane 

of grace and is known inhabited by the mystery of God. 

The Spirit makes the unit in the event. Disappear personal limelight.

praise God, using praise, reflecting biblical passages 

and living the gospel daily in the community.

Is it very important that you have experience? 

"Our world is more tightly bound to witnesses than to teachers" (Paul VI). 

What is growth? 

The group is always on the go needs to grow, develop, it is not about 

the group praying, but the prayer creating a group, create a

Violencia sexual contra los niños 

El perfil del agresor. Según las investigaciones entre 

un 65% y 85% son familiares cercanos del infante. 

Los abusadores intrafamiliares (dentro de la familia 

del menor), suelen tener más de 35 años de edad. 

Utilizan la seducción o el engaño para atraer a sus 

víctimas. El abuso sexual se da cuando un adulto o 

un menor de mayor edad obliga a un niño a mantener 

contacto sexual. Para lograr su objetivo, el abusador 

puede emplear la fuerza física, un soborno, amenazas 

o aprovecharse de la ingenuidad de la criatura. 

Los hay de traje y corbata, de jeans y zapatillas, con ojos 

claros u oscuros, rubios o morenos, altos o bajos, gordos 

o flacos, con o sin hijos, familiares o amigos, vecinos o 

amigos, conocidos o desconocidos, mujeres o varones, 

no hay formas de distinguirlos, es por eso que debemos 

estar atentos a nuestro alrededor y a las señales que 

dan los mas chiquitos. “Es sumamente importante saber 

que un niño es incapaz de crear en su mente un abuso 

sexual porque a tan corta edad la sexualidad no esta instalada 

en su cabeza, por eso inmediatamente se le debe 

creer”, El abuso sexual infantil debe tomarse muy en 

cuenta como una de las posibles causas si el niño 

presenta alguno(s) de los siguientes síntomas: 

Problemas para dormir: pesadillas, se orina en la 

cama, no puede dormir, necesita encender 

las luces (siente temor). Pierde el 

control y se orina o hace el dos. 

Pierde el apetito o come mucho. 

Muchos miedos nuevos, se 

aferra, no quiere quedarse solo. 

R e g r e s i o n a , c o m i e n z a a 

comportarse como un niño más 

joven (como bebé). Cambia 

repentinamente de conducta; de 

extrovertido a tímido o se aísla. Regala 

o tira un juguete favorito o alguna otra posesión 

querida. Repentinamente se enoja contra un padre, 

familiar o amigo. Dificultades en la escuela. No se 

concentra en sus tareas, puede ser agresivo con otros 

niños. Muestra comportamientos sexuales, se obsesiona 

con partes o palabras sexuales, besos inapropiados 

como el “beso francés”, conocimiento sexual que no va 

de acuerdo con su edad. Hace comentarios vagos como: 

“Ya no me gusta el tío José”. Se niega a ir a ciertos 

lugares o a estar con cierta persona. Irritabilidad o enojo. 

Muchas veces los abusadores se hacen buenos amigos 

de los padres/guardianes del niño para ganarse la 

confianza y tener fácil acceso a sus hijos. De esta 

manera, si el niño denuncia los actos es difícil para la 

familia creer que tan “buena persona” haya hecho o 

esté haciendo actos tan graves. Enseñamos a nuestros 

hijos a cuidarse de desconocidos, de extraños y amigos 

principalmente enseñar a los niños a decir a los mayores 

que no les gusta que los besen, los abracen fuerte, les 

hagan cosquillas o cualquier otra acción que los haga 

sentirse incómodos, que respetuosamente se puede 

decir ¡NO! y que esa persona debe de parar. El adulto 

que no tenga intención de hacer daño dejará de hacer 

sentir incómodo al niño y así, el niño aprendería que 

expresar su descontento es un poder que ellos tienen. 

Debe explicar al menor este tema lo mas pequeño 

posible, si no sabe como hacerlo edúquese. Si descubre 

que su hijo ha sido víctima de una violación, es 

importante buscar ayuda lo antes posible, lleve a su hijo 

a una sala de emergencias de inmediato, llame a la 

policía o llame a la línea directa de atención de crisis por 

violación (800) 656-HOPE. En el hospital, se realizarán 

estudios a su hijo. Si es posible, busque atención médica 

antes de que su hijo se cambie la ropa, se bañe o se 

higienice y tenga en cuenta que los médicos y 

las enfermeras normalmente denuncian las 

agresiones sexuales a las autoridades ).
