one message 

Caminaba con mi padre, cuando se detuvo en 

una curva y, después de un pequeño silencio, 

me preguntó: 

- ¿Oyes algo más, que el cantar de los pájaros? 

Agudicé mis oídos y algunos segundos después, 

le respondí: 

- Sí, es el ruido de una carreta. 

- Eso es, - me dijo.- Es una carreta vacía. 

Pregunté a mi padre: 

- ¿Cómo sabes que es una carreta vacía, 

si aún no la hemos visto? 

Entonces, una vez mas, me mostró su sabiduría: 

- Es muy fácil darse cuenta: "Cuánto mas vacía está 

la carreta, mayor es el ruido que hace" 

"Me convertí en adulto y hasta hoy, cuando veo a 

una persona hablando demasiado, interrumpiendo 

la conversación de todos, siendo inoportuna o 

violenta, presumiendo de lo que tiene, sintiéndose 

prepotente y tratando con superioridad a los demás... 

Tengo la impresión de oír la voz 

de mi padre diciendo: 

- "Cuanto más vacía la carreta, 

mayor es el ruido que hace".

José Juan Urzquizo es un educador 

y líder en la comunidad. Nace el 22 de 

septiembre en 1973 en Ventura, 

California, su familia se origina de 

Zacatecas. 

El comparte cómo desde pequeño 

recuerda viajar mucho como familia 

migrante. El nos dice: “Mis padres 

trabajan en el campo y nos 

mudábamos entre Salinas, Yuma 

Arizona, y Zacatecas”. 

De esta experiencia, crece 

mirando el esfuerzo de sus padres 

quienes logran sacar adelante a sus 

siete hermanos y él. También, nos 

cuenta: “Mi papá nos llevaba mucho al 

rancho donde nació, Boca de Rivera, 

Villanueva en Zacatecas. 

Además, José Juan comparte cómo 

desde esta pequeña edad trabaja. 

Él nos explica: “Mi papá nos llevaba 

a los campos de fresa y lechuga a 

trabajar durante los veranos y 

vacaciones”. El agrega al respecto 

como en esta época presencia el gran 

esfuerzo de la comunidad campesina. 

También, él recuerda con gran 

entusiasmo y nostalgia a sus padres. 

El nos dice: “Mis padres son de dos 

ranchitos del estado de Zacatecas. 

Emigraron a Estados Unidos hace 45 

años y regresaban a México cada año. 

Siempre nos inculcaron el amor a 

aún cuando crecí cómo 

a lu m n o m i g rante , 

siguiendo las corridas 

y sin tener experiencia 

del sistema educativo 

u n i v e r s i t a r i o ” . 

Durante sus estudios 

universitarios el participa en diversas 

organizaciones. El nos dice: “Durante 

la universidad participé en el 

Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de 

Aztlan. Es un grupo que aboga por la 

justicia social para todos”. También 

nos dice: “Participé en marchas 

pidiendo más acceso a oportunidades 

para jóvenes de nuestra comunidad. 

Después de recibirse de la universidad 

sigue participando en la comunidad. 

El nos explica: “ También he 

participado en varios comités/grupos 

educativos como Educación Migrante, 

C.A.B.E (asociación de California de 

bilingüe), bailé folklórico, estuve en 

un comité de aprendices de inglés”. 

Además de participar en varias 

organizaciones también ha sido un 

voluntario. El nos dice: “Varios comités 

educativos. Noches de lectura 

familiar, eventos de deportes, eventos 

culturales para la comunidad. Durante 

la universidad organice varios eventos 

comunitarios: donación de juguetes, 

conferencia para alumnos de la 

secundaria, eventos culturales, tutor 

voluntario en escuelas primarias”. 

Hoy en día es director de la 

escuela primaria Virginia Rocca Barton 

del Distrito Alisal. Antes de lograr dirigir 

esta primaria él nos explica que: 

“Fui maestro por siete años y coordiné 

programas de liderazgo (Programa 

"Yo Puedo" y AVANCE) para alumnos 

migrantes con el objetivo de 

prepararlos y motivarlos para 

la universidad. 

Este gran líder educativo 

comparte de dónde recibe toda su 

motivación. El dice: “Mi motivación 

es la comunidad del este de Salinas. 

He visto tanta energía y motivación 

por parte de nuestra comunidad para 

superarse. Me da mucho orgullo ver 

cómo tanta gente se 

ha sacrificado tanto al 

dejar su país, familia y 

cuánto se esmera por 

proveer un futuro 

mejor para sus hijos. 

Los alumnos que 

asisten a nuestras 

escuelas son muy

talentosos. También

él se ha destacado como Maestro del 

Año en 1998 para el Distrito de 

Greenfield, en el 2000 es Maestro 

del Año para el distrito de Alisal, 

recibe el Outstanding Teacher Award / 

Maestro Sobresaliente (U.S Senate 

Seal of Excellence) del Año en el 2001. 

Al pedirle un consejo para nuestra 

comunidad en la que él ha crecido y 

educado a lo largo de los años, él nos 

dijo: “La integridad y justicia social son 

muy clave para convivir en comunidad. 

Creo que es muy importante recalcar 

los valores y educación que vienen de 

nuestros hogares/padres al igual que 

valorar la educación escolar. 

Es muy importante aprovechar las

Finalmente agrego: “Aconsejo a los 

padres que motiven y apoyen a sus 

hijos a seguir sus estudios. Una 

educación vale mucho ya que es algo 

que nadie te puede quitar. 

Aunque algunos padres no tengan 

los recursos monetarios o de 

conocimiento del sistema educativo, 

la educación que le dan a sus hijos 

en casa en cuestión de valores, 

tradiciones y esfuerzo- vale oro. 

¡Sí se puede!”. 

José Juan Urquizo nos muestra 

como sobrepasar, los obstáculos en 

la vida, y nos enseña, la importancia 

de inculcar valores en la niñez, es 

admirable el amor, el respeto y 

obediencia a sus padres, además

Las pandillas representan–para algunos 

jóvenes–un modo de vida, un modo de existencia y 

reproducción social. Y es, además, una forma de 

protegerse de una inseguridad. Esa inseguridad se debe 

a que algunos barrios no son adaptados para la vida, 

porque han sido abandonados por el mundo adulto, que 

decidió tener un proyecto de vida que abandono el lazo 

social, y se resigna a vivir encerrado (tanto en el hogar como 

en el trabajo)–o incluso a levantar rejas altas en cada 

hogar con tal de tener la sensación de estar . 

En esos barrios tipo “dormitorio” 

es muy difícil 

que sea posible la vida social: no hay gente en la calle 

porque el barrio no tiene lugares para la 

comunicación 

o diversión. Y los jóvenes y adolescentes necesitan 

de mayores condiciones de sociabilidad, de ese 

tránsito por el espacio público, una vida social más 

amplia que la aburrida y anticuada que tienen ahora los 

adultos. Entonces los jóvenes mas abandonados y 

confundidos buscan un modo para apropiarse de estos 

espacios y convertirlos erróneamente en comunidades 

unidas, a la fuerza y agresivamente, por la falta de 

atención, amor, y comunicación en la sociedad adulta. 

¿CÓMO EMPIEZAN LAS PANDILLAS? 

Según estudios en la escuela y el vecindario es cuando 

muchos niños se empiezan a involucrarse en pandillas. 

Para los padres de familia que trabajan es difícil saber qué 

es lo que sus hijos están haciendo durante el día, y 

piensan que sus hijos están seguros en la escuela o en la 

casa. Muchos no saben que es allí precisamente donde 

muchos pandilleros comienzas su proceso de 

reclutamiento. Por eso es muy importante prestar mucha 

atención en el comportamiento de los hijos. Hay algunas 

cosas que se deben observar y buscar ayuda profesional si 

usted cree que su hijo está cayendo en las garras 

de este monstruo llamado pandillas. 

¿Sabe usted lo que es una padilla? Una pandilla es un grupo 

de tres personas o más con un interés en común, 

caracterizado por la comisión de delitos, o conducta 

delincuente. O sea, es un grupo dedicado a cometer actos 

criminales. Antiguamente la mayoría de pandilleros se tatuaban 

para así demostrar que eran miembros de 

determinada padilla, por eso era sencillo saber quién era 

pandillero, pero hoy en día eso ha cambiado mucho, 

porque muchos pandilleros quieren pasar desapercibidos 

en nuestra sociedad. Algunos se pueden reconocer por 

su vestimenta, señas, dibujos, y forma de actuar. 

Así es que si usted nota algunos de los siguientes 

comportamientos en sus hijos debe 

de poner más atención en ellos. 

-Cambio en su estilo de vestir, 

usualmente vistiendo un color en especial. 

-Bajas calificaciones o ausencias en la escuela. 

-Posesión de dinero. 

-Tatuajes, apodos, o dibujos en artículos personales con 

afiliaciones a un grupo en especial. 

-Frecuentar personas o lugares de pandilleros. 

Estas son solo algunas señales de que su hijo puede estar 

involucrado en pandillas. 

Hable con sus hijos, involúcrese en sus 

vidas, revise sus mochilas y cuadernos, 

recuerde que muchos de estos dibujos y 

letras aunque parezcan bellos pueden 

significar que su hijo es pandillero. 

No crea que porque su hijo aún es muy 

joven no puede pertenecer a una pandilla. 

¿Cuales son las consecuencias? 

La respuesta es simple, el uso de drogas, 

alcohol, abandono de los estudios, la 

cárcel, ser herido y hasta ser asesinado. 

Lo más importante es descubrir esto a 

tiempo, busque ayuda, nunca es 

demasiado tarde, haga todo lo que este en 

sus manos sáquelo de la pandilla no se los 

deje y si es necesario ponga tierra de por 

medio, recuerde su hijo es mas importante 

que su trabajo o sus bienes. 

“Saquéelo, guíelo, protéjalo, porque es su hijo”. 

Gangs represent for some young people, a way of life, a 

mode of existence and social reproduction. And besides, it's a 

way to protect themselves from insecurity. This uncertainty is 

because some neighborhoods are not adapted for life because 

they have been abandoned by the adult world, they decided to

every home just to have the feeling of being safe. In those type 

"bedroom" neighborhoods it is very difficult for the social life to 

be possible : there are no people on the street because the

entertainment. And young and older teens need sociability 

condition of that transit through the public space, wider than the 

dull and outdated social life the adults now have. Then the most 

abandoned and confused teens begin looking for a way to 

appropriate these spaces and make them erroneously linked to 

the strength and aggressively communities, lack of attention, 

love, and communication of all adults in society. 

HOW TO ATART GANGS? According to studies it is in school and 

neighborhood where and when many children begin to involve 

themselves into gangs. For parents who work, it is hard to know 

what their children are doing during the day, and they think that 

their children are safe at school or at home. Many do not know 

that it is precisely where many gangs begin their recruiting 

process. It is therefore very important to pay close attention to 

the behavior of children. There are some things which must be 

observed and seek professional help if you think your child is 

falling into the clutches of this monster called gangs. 

DO YOU KNOW WHAT A GANG? A gang is a group of three or 

more people with a common interest , characterized by the 

commission of crimes or delinquent behavior. That is, is a 

group dedicated to commit criminal acts. Formerly most gang 

members where tattooed in order to prove they were members 

of a certain gang, so it was easy to tell who was a gang member, 

but today that has changed a lot, because many gang members 

want to go unnoticed in our society. Some can be recognized by 

their clothing, signs, pictures, and how they act. 

So if you notice any of the following behaviors in your children 

you should pay more attention to them. 

-Change in their style of dress, 

usually wearing a particular color . 

-Low grades or absences from school . 

-Possession of money. 

-Tattoos, nicknames, or drawings on personal 

items with affiliations to a particular group. 

-Frequent people or places for gangs. These are just 

some signs that your child may be involved in gangs. 

Talk to your children, get involved in their lives, check their 

backpacks and notebooks, remember that many of these 

drawings and letters look beautiful but may mean that your child 

is a gang member. Do not think that because your child is still 

very young they can not belong to a gang. 

What are the consequences? The answer is simple, 

the use of drugs, alcohol, dropouts, jail, being injured 

and even killed. The most important thing is to discover 

this in time, get help, it's never too late , do everything that 

is in your hands pull them out of the gang 's do not leave them 

and if necessary put land in between, 

remember your child is more important than work or goods.

este escritor de Aracataca, Colombia nace 

en 1927 y desde temprana edad escribe. 

Es merecedor del premio Nobel de literatura. 

Las historias que nos cuentan sus 

escrituras, son así como él las escuchaba de 

sus abuelitos. En estas une elementos 

reales y supernaturales. También reflejan los 

problemas sociales y políticas en nuestra 

América, señala e indica con su ficción las 

dinámicas de poder a las que fuerzas 

extranjeras someten a nuestras tierras. 

La novela más reconocida y traducida Cien 

años de soledad presenta 

estas cuestionas, dentro del 

mundo de Macondo con la 

familia Buendía, ciudad que 

de alguna manera parece 

ser un reflejo de ciudades 

y familias latinoamericanas. 

García Márquez dijo de su 

obra: "Había que contar el 

cuento, simplemente, 

como lo contaban los 

abuelos. Es decir, en un tono 

impertérrito, con una 

seriedad a toda prueba que 

no se alteraba aunque se les 

estuviera cayendo el mundo 

encima, y sin poner en duda 

en ningún momento lo que 

estaban contando". Así lo 

recordamos por sus gran 

obra que seguirá a lo largo 

del tiempo, dónde él 

también seguirá vivo 

mientras se sigan leyendo 

sus libros en cualquier 

idioma. García Márquez una 

vez nos dijo: “A mi me hubiera 

gustado morirme por mi cuenta, pero si 

mi destino era ese yo tenía que asumirlo” 

Remembering the great Colombian 

writer Gabriel García Márquez means to 

honor his work as an ambassador of our 

culture and our Latin American experience to 

the world. He was born in Aracataca, 

Colombia in 1927. The stories he tells are 

based on the stories his grandparents 

shared to him; stories of real and 

supernatural elements. These stories reflect 

the social and political problems in Latin 

America. His fiction presents the power in 

which foreign forces submit our land and 

people. In his most recognized and 

translated novel, One 

Hundred Years of Solitud 

he questions these things 

with Buendia family in his 

fictional town of Macondo, 

which seems to be a 

reflection of so many cities 

and families in Latin 

America. García Márquez 

once said about his work: 

“We had to tell the tale, 

just as my grandparents 

had that is, in an 

unabashed pitch with a 

seriousness foolproof not 

altered even if the world 

around them was falling 

down, never doubting at 

any time what they telling”. 

So we remember him for 

his great work, which will

Jugo de Limón: El jugo de limón es el remedio mas 

popular que hay para desvanecer manchas en la piel. 

Pero hay que tener cuidado de no exponerse al sol 

mientras se esté usando jugo de limón porque se puede 

m a n c h a r m a s l a p i e l . 

Limón y Tomate: El jugo de tomate es muy beneficioso 

para la piel por su contenido en vitamina A. Se puede 

mezclar una cucharada de jugo de limón y una 

cucharada de jugo de tomate, se revuelve y se aplica 

con una algodón sobre las manchas. Se deja unos 20 

m i n u t o s y s e l a v a . I m p o r t a n t e 

- No se exponga al sol sin antes haberse lavado bien 

la piel. Para extra protección, se debe usar bloqueador 

solar. 

Las manchas en la piel pueden salir por una variedad de 

razones. Puede ser por herencia, por la edad, cambios 

hormonales, por daño causado por el sol o por una dieta 

pobre. Ingredientes como el pepino, el jugo de limón, el 

jugo de papa y el perejil son remedios populares para 

desvanecer manchas del cutis. 

Remedios naturales para quitar manchas en la piel 

Pepino y Perejil : Al igual que el limón, el perejil y el 

pepino también tienen efectos blanqueadores. Una 

receta para quitar manchas de la piel se puede hacer 

mezclando 5 cucharadas de pepino licuado, 5 

cucharadas de perejil machacado, 5 cucharadas de 

aceite de ajonjolí o aceite de germen de trigo. Se pone 

en un frasco de vidrio y se cierra bien. Se guarda en 

lugar oscuro por unos días y luego se aplica en 

compresas por 20 minutos a las manchas. 

Crema de coco: Otro ingrediente casero que sirve para 

quitar las manchas en la piel es la crema de coco. 

Aplíquesela todas las noches. 

Arcilla, Naranja y Zanahoria: 2 cucharadas de arcilla, 

media naranja, el jugo de una zanahoria. Lo mezcla todo 

y se lo pone en la cara. Se lo deja hasta que se seque 

y se ponga duro. Enjuáguese después. 

Cebolla y vinagre: La cebolla es buena para quitar 

manchas en la piel. El vinagre es un peeling natural. 

Machaque una cebolla y mézclela con vinagre. 

Aplique directamente sobre la mancha y déjela actuar 

por 15 minutos y se lava. Si siente irritación lave 

i n m e d i a t a m e n t e . 

No se exponga al sol después de usar este remedio.

escritora española en lenguas 

castellana y gallega. Perteneciente 

por línea materna a una familia noble, 

su primer libro, La flor, se publicó en 

Madrid en 1857 y recibió elogiosas 

críticas de Manuel Martínez Murguía, 

crítico destacado del Renacimiento 

gallego, con quien Rosalía de Castro 

contrajo matrimonio al año siguiente. 

Vivió en medio de constantes 

penurias económicas, dedicada a su 

hogar y a sus hijos; la muerte de su 

madre y la de uno de sus hijos fueron 

dos duros golpes para ella. A esta 

amarga experiencia se refiere su 

primera obra de madurez, el libro de 

poemas A mi madre (1863), al cual 

siguieron los Cantares gallegos (1863), 

canto a su Galicia rural, lleno de 

añoranza y denuncia ante la 

explotación de los segadores por 

parte de Castilla. Con Cantares 

gallegos, escrito íntegramente en 

lengua gallega, dio comienzo el 

renacimiento poético en esa lengua. 

Regresó después a la novela 

con Ruinas (1866), historia de tres 

mujeres ejemplares y desdichadas en 

el seno de un ambiente moderno que 

perciben como ajeno. Un año después 

se publicó su obra narrativa más 

conseguida, El caballero de las botas 

azules(1867), novela misteriosa y 

fantástica que conecta con lo mejor 

de su labor lírica. En 1880 apareció 

su segundo libro en gallego, Las 

Follas novas, expresión angustiada e 

intimista sobre la muerte y la soledad 

del ser humano. Cierran su 

producción literaria la novela El 

primer loco (1881) y el poemario en 

lengua castellana En las orillas del 

Sar(1885); este último continúa la 

línea de meditación metafísica 

iniciada con Follas novas, si bien 

acentuando esta vez el sentimiento 

religioso. La obra de Rosalía, que se 

mueve entre una preocupación de 

tipo social por las duras condiciones 

de los pescadores y los campesinos 

gallegos y otra de carácter metafísico 

que la sitúa dentro de la literatura 

existencial, se ha equiparado a la de 

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer en tanto que 

representante tardía del 

Romanticismo español, si 

bien esta relación viene 

más por la comunidad de 

fuentes literarias que por 

una real afinidad de 

actitud literaria y vital. 

Su poesía, en particular, 

denota ansiedad, una 

inquietud angustiada 

ante extraños 

presentimientos que se 

perciben como propios 

en el más cercano 

entorno. Asimismo, su 

dolorosa sensibilidad 

proyectó un conjunto de 

magníficas visiones del 

paisaje gallego en las 

que predomina una atmósfera gris de 

tristeza indefinible. Esa sensibilidad 

fue la que transportó una concepción 

de la naturaleza como la de una 

realidad animada, misteriosa, y cuyos

vida doliente. Falleció el 15 de julio de 

1885, recibió con fervor los Santos 

Sacramentos, recitando en voz baja 

sus predilectas oraciones. Encargó a 

sus hijos quemasen los trabajos 

literarios que, ordenados y reunidos 

por ella misma, dejaba sin publicar. 

Dispuso se la enterrara en el 

cementerio de Adina, y pidiendo un 

ramo de pensamientos, la flor de su 

predilección, no bien se lo acercó a 

los labios sufrió un ahogo que fue 

comienzo de su agonía. Delirante, 

y nublada la vista, dijo a su hija 

Alejandra: "abre esa ventana que 

quiero ver el mar", y cerrando sus 

ojos para siempre, expiró...»

trasladar a otro lugar, situación o clase; No admite preposición 

y se puede usar como enclítico; tiempo que la Tierra emplea en 

dar una vuelta alrededor de su eje; equivale a 24 horas; 

Reflexionar, examinar con cuidado algo para formar dictamen”. 

Los días pasaron y empezó a despedir un hedor. 

El paciente seguía sucio, repugnante y obsceno. Todo 

resultaba molesto, enfadoso e insufrible. Todo causaba enfado. 

Repetía actos de saña, encono o venganza. Seguía paralizado. 

Esto era para él una actividad y violenta agitación de las cosas 

inanimadas. Le faltaba honestidad, modestia y recato. Seguía 

diciéndose, “Pasaron los días pensé; mudar, trasladar a otro 

lugar, situación o clase; No admite preposición y se puede usar 

como enclítico; tiempo que la Tierra emplea en dar una vuelta 

alrededor de su eje; equivale a 24 horas; Reflexionar, examinar 

con cuidado algo para formar dictamen”. Podía mudarse, 

trasladarse a otro lugar de la casa pero seguía en el piso como 

estatua de marfil, ponderando y engrandeciendo sus acciones. 

En ese espectáculo que nadie presencio seguía con el fulgor de 

una estrella que nunca brillo. Pasaron los días. El quedo 

paralizado por el espanto o la sorpresa de los días. Pensó, “El 

día es el tiempo en que el Sol está sobre el horizonte”. Pasaron 

los días a convertirse en semana. La semana, una serie de 

siete días naturales consecutivos, del lunes al domingo. 

Pasaron los días a convertirse en semanas que pasaron a 

convertirse en meses. El mes, una de las doce partes en que se 

divide el año. O el conjunto de días consecutivos desde uno 

señalado hasta otro de igual fecha en el mes siguiente. Seguía,

Chapter 2: Like Kino

It was the summer of 1999, or so, we lived in Paseo Grande 

Avenue back then there was nothing around it, the over priced 

homes that would later be foreclosed had not even been built, they 

were just 2x4 skeletons of American Dreams, to my friends and I 

they were playgrounds, since all we had to do was jump the fence 

from the public townhouses to the uncharted private territory of the 

“rich” to play and imagine we built our own homes. Across the street 

from Paseo Grande there was an empty lot, which is now La Paz 

Middle School, back then it was just weeds and grass, snakes and 

gofers, and the occasional norteño running away through the lot, 

after shooting brownie mi tío (but that’s another story). The mild 

summers to my friends and I were a time for adventures. We had to 

find things to do, things to discover. For a while, we stole cheap 

plywood, stucco, nails, screwdrivers, and 2x4 from the construction 

sights. We took all of this to the empty lot to build and create our 

own home for free. After a while we noticed we had to work harder 

since the homes were almost completed, which to my friends and I 

meant less tools and supplies for our little house. Although our 

badly built house, (which seemed more like a cave) was about 100 

meters from our actual home, it felt like miles and miles away, but it 

was our space, it belong to all of us, we had all built it together. 

Once we found out the lot was going to be used to build a middle 

school we knew it marked the end of our creation, at first we were 

upset since it meant less playground, but then we realized that this 

meant we were going to be the first to attend this new school, and 

we no longer had to walk for about an hour, to the other side 

of town to El Sausal Middle School. Do to permits and delayed 

construction the school did not open until my first year of high 

school. Since we could not play there anymore, we heard that Alisal 

High School had a swimming pool open for the summer. All we 

needed was a buck and actual swimming trunks; we couldn’t wear 

old jeans turned into shorts or our boxer briefs. As soon as we heard 

we all grabbed the best swimming shorts we had, asked our parents 

for $1 (which for some of us it took some convincing to do), grabbed 

our trunks, towel, and goggles (if you had some) and threw it all into 

a Monte Mart, Food 4 Less, or where ever your parents went for el 

mandado. We rode our bikes to the high school, to swim. When we 

got there, we paid our dollar, and jumped into the pool, we stayed 

until it was time to go. After the first visit, we asked about the hours, 

asked our parents for $5 for the week, since it was closed Saturday 

through Sunday, and everyday we swam. One day, after having 

played in the shallow pool for days, which to us it felt like years, 

someone said “lets go into the deep end”. That day was different, 

since the strict lifeguard was not working; the lifeguard whose 

number #1 rule in order to leave the shallow end was to swim 

across the pool without stopping. Swimming across seemed like an 

impossible task, but knowing the lifeguard was gone, we hopped out 

of the shallow pool and went into the deep pool. None of us wanted 

to let go of the edge, it was deep, the water was no longer light blue 

or clear, it was deep blue. You could not see the bottom, which 

scared us. We would take turns borrowing goggles to just see how 

deep it was. Someone said, “swim; swim across”, but nobody 

wanted to it. I thought, “I could do it”, but I was afraid to say it, but 

when I heard another friend say, “I can do it”, I jumped in, and said, 

“I can do it to”. I can’t remember who went first, but at the end of 

the day we both had swam across the deep end. I still remember 

that a friend said: “what if you start to drown?” I replied: “well then 

the lifeguard will come and rescue me”. So I pushed myself from the 

edge, I did not look back, just moved forward, non-stop, waiting and 

trying to get to the other side, the rush, the freedom it was nothing 

like it, it was not like building a house or stealing construction 

materials from the unconstructed foreclosed American Dreams, it 

was incredible, moving in space, floating, not knowing if you were 

going to make it, but knowing that every movement meant survival, 

meant reaching this goal. After, I made it to the other side I was 

ready to do it again. The next day, I was able to prove to the strict 

lifeguard that I was able to swim across the pool. Once I did, 

he allowed me to swim in the deep end; this was my first 

encounter with bureaucracy. 

Once I was in the deep end, the challenge of swimming across 

became a routine, a task, a means to an end; it lost its excitement, 

since I knew I could do it. So, instead I swam to the bottom. The 

goal became to swim down to the floor of the pool, hoping I would 

come back up. I started with 8 ½ ft, until I got to 13 ½ ft, this was a 

rush, I had to hold my breath; unable to breath, unable to come up 

for oxygen. The sounds on the surface with every stroke became 

much more distant, my ears began to ring. Once, I hit the bottom of 

the pool, I would spring back up like Kino from The Pearl, but unlike 

him I arouse empty handed, with no one coming after me to kill me 

and to take away the precious stone I had found.

Milpa Alta posee un rico patrimonio 

cultural. Posee construcciones 

históricas como el templo de Nuestra 

Señora de la Asunción de Villa Milpa 

Alta y el Cuartel Zapatistaen San Pablo 

Oztotepec. En los pueblos se realizan 

numerosas festividades entre las que 

destacan la Feria Nacional del Mole, 

el Festival de los Globos de Papel, 

laFeria del Nopal y la celebración 

del Día de Muertos. Se encuentra en la 

delegación la comunidad de hablantes 

nativos de náhuatl más importante del 

Distrito Federal. Además, una parte 

de San Antonio Tecómitl forma parte 

del polígono declarado Patrimonio de 

la Humanidad por Unesco como parte 

de la zona chinampera 

del valle de México.

786 –El pueblo de Dios participa 

Malaquías, 3:8.¿Puede acaso un hombre engañar a Dios? 

Pero ustedes me están engañando. Ustedes dirán: «¿En qué cosa 

te hemos engañado?» Pues, con los diezmos y tributos sagrados. 

Queridos hermanos, los invito a meditar acerca de los diezmos, es 

muy importante, debemos recordar siempre que de nuestro diezmo, 

Dios nos regresa el cien porciento por uno, al dar nosotros nuestro 

diezmo, El no lo multiplica y si no cree te invito a que hagas la prueba 

y veras que lo que dice Dios en su palabra lo cumple, el no lo reafirma 

en el salmo 23:1- “El señor es mi pastor nada me falta”. 

¿A dónde debes llevar el diezmo? Examina bien tu vida ¿ estas dando 

a Dios lo que le corresponde?.. Debes llevar el diezmo a la comunidad 

de la iglesia donde te están instruyendo, donde estas creciendo en la 

palabra de Dios y en comunión con tu sacerdote y obispo, siempre 

acordémonos que el diezmo es solamente para el sustento 

de la extensión del reino de Dios. 

No nos confundamos el diezmo es muy diferente, dar limosna, 

ofrendas, obras de caridad, y primicias es diferente. Cada cosa en 

su lugar el diezmo es diezmo y es el que se debe llevar a nuestra 

parroquia y seamos generosos. Nos dice: Ageo 1:3-10 2.«Aquí tienen 

una respuesta de Yavé a lo que dice este pueblo, que todavía no ha 

llegado el momento de reconstruir la Casa de Yavé.» 3.Así es cómo 

Yavé habló por medio del profeta Ageo, y les dijo: 4.¿Cómo es posible 

que ustedes se queden en sus casas bien construidas, mientras esta 

Casa es un montón de escombros? 5.Pues bien, Yavé de los ejércitos 

les dice: Examinen cómo van sus asuntos: 6.ustedes han sembrado 

mucho, pero han cosechado poco; han comido, pero se han quedado 

con hambre; han bebido, pero han seguido con sed; se han vestido, 

pero no estaban bien abrigados. Y el obrero pone el dinero que ha 

ganado en un bolsillo roto. 7.Piensen en lo que hacen: 8.Vayan al monte 

a buscar madera y reconstruyan la Casa. Con eso yo seré feliz y me 

sentiré muy honrado a la vez, dice Yavé. 9.Ustedes esperaban mucho y 

lo que amontonaron es muy poco, pues yo lo he soplado. ¿«Por qué? - 

pregunta Yavé-. Porque mi Casa está en ruinas, mientras cada uno de 

ustedes corre para arreglar la suya. 10.Por esto los cielos han retenido 

la lluvia y la tierra no ha dado sus frutos. 

(Gracias espíritu santo te amo con toda mi existencia). 

PROPOSITO DEL MES: Este mes seré mas generoso. A pesar de que la iglesia 

católica no exige, ni obliga a dar el diezmo tendré conciencia de mi obligación 

de contribuir, a la medida de Cristo y por amor a El, según las necesidades de 

la Iglesia. Porque dar es un privilegio, un gozo, y una obligación. Además es 

parte integral de nuestra vocación como cristiano de hacer TODO lo posible 

para propagar el Reino de Dios.

important, we must always remember that from our tithe , God 

brings us one hundred percent, giving us our tithe , He multiplies it 

and if you do not believe I invite you do the test and see what God 

says in his word as true, the not reaffirmed in Psalm 23:1 - " the 

Lord is my shepherd I am not missing anything." Where you should

Salinas City celebraron el Primer Festival Anual de Música el 3 

de mayo de 2014, a la Escuela Primaria Boronda Meadows. 

Los estudiantes de Boronda Meadows, El Gavilán, Kammann, 

Laurel Wood, la Escuela Primaria Lincoln, Loma Vista, 

Los Padres, Mission Park, Monterey Park, Natividad School, 

Roosevelt, Sherwood School, University Park a cabo durante 

el Festival de Música del Primer Distrito Escolar. Algunos

Park, Natividad School, Roosevelt, Sherwood School, University 

Park performed during the First School District Music Festival.

Salinas City Elementary Educational Foundation The Salinas 

City Elementary Educational Foundation was founded in 2005 

by concerned community members with the main purpose 

of raising funds to provide Salinas City Elementary School 

District students with music, technology and art education. 

The majority of the students in our district qualify for reduced 

or free lunch, categorizing the SCESD as a Title 1 district. In 

addition, over 1,000 of our students are classified as homeless. 

The Foundation strives to provide the SCESD’s thirteen school 

sites and their students with art and music experiences not 

otherwise afforded to them. As we all know, today’s State and 

Federal funding for education continues to be reduced at a 

very alarming and devastating rate, with no relief to these 

drastic cuts in education expected in the near future. Without 

the generosity of our community, the over 8,700 children that 

Salinas City Elementary School District services will not be 

provided with the essential exposure to arts, music and 

technology that they need in order to be successful. “Students are
