"Mama y Papa, voy de regreso a casa, pero tengo
un favor que pedirles, Tengo un amigo que quisiera
llevar conmigo". "Claro Hijo", respondieron sus padres,
"nos encantaría conocerlo". "Pero hay algo que deben de
saber", dijo el soldado, "él fue herido gravemente durante
la guerra y perdió un brazo y una pierna. El no tiene a
donde ir, y yo quiero que se venga a vivir con nosotros".
"Lamento escuchar eso hijo. Tal vez lo podamos ayudar a
encontrar un lugar donde vivir". "No, Mama y Papa, yo
quiero que viva con nosotros". "Hijo", dijo el papá, "tu no
sabes lo que estas pidiendo. Alguien con semejantes
limitaciones seria una terrible carga para nosotros
tenemos nuestras propias vidas que vivir, y no podemos
permitir que algo así nos interfiera. Yo creo que tu solo
deberías venir a casa y olvidarte de ese muchacho.
Él encontrará una forma de vivir el solo". A ese punto,
el hijo colgó el teléfono. Días después, recibieron una
llamada del departamento de policía avisándoles que su
hijo se había muerto después de caer de la azotea de un
edificio, pero la policía sospecha que fue suicidio. Cuando
fueron llevados a la morgue para identificar el cuerpo de
su hijo. Pero para su horror, descubrieron algo que no
sabían, su hijo solo tenia un brazo y una pierna.
Los padres de esta historia son como muchos de nosotros.
Y deberíamos ser más comprensivos con aquellos que son
diferentes a nosotros”… Nos engañamos pensando
que siempre seremos saludables, jóvenes y hermosos!!!
“Mom and Dad, I'm going back home, but I have a
favor to ask you, I have a friend who I would like to take
with me”. "Sure son" replied his parents, "we'd love to
meet him." "But one thing you must know" said the
soldier, "he was severely wounded during the war and
lost an arm and a leg. He has no where to go, and I want
him to come live with us”. "Sorry to hear that son,
perhaps we can help him find a place to live”. "No, Mom
and Dad, I want him to live with us." "Son," said the
father, "you do not know what you're asking. Someone
with such imitations would be a terrible burden for us, we
have our own lives to live, and we can not let something
interfere us. I think you just should come home and forget
about that boy. He'll find a way to live alone. "At that
point, the son hung up the phone. Days later, they
received a call from the police department notifying
them that their son had died after falling from the roof of
a building, but police suspect it was a suicide. When they
were taken to the morgue to identify the body of his son.
But to their horror, they discovered something they did
not know, their son had only one arm and one leg.
The parents in this story are like many of us.
And we should be more understanding of those who are
different from us"… We fool ourselves thinking that we
will always be healthy, young and beautiful !!

Orgullo
Hispano
Karina Cervantes es la alcaldesa
de la ciudad de Watsonville, una
dedicada voluntaria a la comunidad, y
esta apunto de ser doctora. Karina
nace en Tulare California. Ella pasa
la mayor parte de sus años en el
pequeño pueblo de Terra Bella,
California, en el Valle Central.
En esta pequeña comunidad, sus
vecinos comparten una experiencia
similar a la de sus padres, de emigrar
a los Estados Unidos en la década de
los 1970 y principios de 1980s para
trabajar. Ella comparte un anécdota:
"Estábamos acostumbrados a viajar a
Oxnard con bastante regularidad para
visitar a la familia de mi padre, que
trabajaba en la industria de la fresa,
y cada par de años, si conseguíamos
permiso de la escuela, viajábamos al
estado natal de mis padres,
Michoacán. Aunque ellos trabajaron
muy duro por muy poco dinero, y el
dinero fue siempre limitado, tengo
grandes recuerdos de estar rodeada
de tías, tíos, primos, muchas risas, y
siempre había un vecino o un
miembro de la familia, cuidándonos".
En sus primeros años asiste a
la Escuela Primaria Terra Bella, a la
secundaria Car F. Smith Middle
School, y Porterville High School.
Durante sus años en preparatoria
enfrenta dificultades. Ella dice:
“Me esforcé mucho en la escuela
secundaria. Yo casi no me gradué a
tiempo”. Ella explica, que su vida
habría sido completamente diferente
si un maestro no la hubiera ayudado.
Ella nos dice: “Él me ayudó a asistir a
un colegio comunitario tan solo por
haberme ayudado a hacer una cita
con un consejero académico. Esto fue
un paso importante en el que tuve la
oportunidad de trazar mis 2 años en
un colegio comunitario para poder
transferirme a una universidad de
cuatro años”. Más tarde, ella recibe
su Bachillerato en Artes (BA) y su
Maestría en Ciencias (MS).
Actualmente está terminando su
doctorado (PhD) en Psicología
también de la Universidad de
California, Santa Cruz, donde ha
publicado artículos académicos.
Karina comparte con orgullo: “Ahora
he recibido mi licenciatura, maestría,
y pronto mi doctorado, algo que en
algún momento parecía imposible
para mí”.
L a g r a n
motivación a lo largo
de la vida de Karina
ha sido la gente
trabajadora a su
alrededor. Ella nos
dice: “Estoy motivada
para trabajar duro, porque me rodeo

todavía nos queda por hacer
en nuestros respectivos
barrios. Hay que ser voluntarios
y conectarnos uno con los
otros, porque juntos podemos
construir una comunidad más
fuerte para todas nuestras
familias”. -Karina Cervantez
de gente que también trabaja duro.
Mis padres van a trabajar antes de
que salga el sol, y tienen que
trabajar bajo la lluvia, en el frío, y a
veces bajo temperaturas mayores a
100 grados. Y lo que siempre me
dijeron fue que ellos trabajan duro
para que todos nosotros (mi hermano,
mi hermana y yo) pudiéramos tener la
oportunidad a la educación que ellos
nunca tuvieron”. Sin lugar a duda los
padres de Karina la han inspirado a lo
largo de su carrera y vida. Ella agrega:
“Mis padres son una inspiración. Llegaron
a este país con muy poco dinero,
conociendo sólo un poco de personas, y
ahora son dueños de una casa, han
podido ayudar a sus tres niños asistir a la
universidad”.
Todo la dedicación de Karina
ahora ha visto los frutos de su trabajo
al convertirse en una joven
académica y líder de la comunidad.
Karina es la alcaldesa de la Ciudad de
Watsonville. Con orgullo nos dice
"Yo soy la segunda Latina en haber tenido
la oportunidad de servir en el consejo de
la ciudad y soy la segunda Latina que ha
servido como alcaldesa”. Antes de ser
elegida como alcaldesa de la Ciudad
de Watsonville, Karina trabajó con
YCORP, donde trabajó directamente
con los jóvenes en transición del
centro de detención juvenil a la
comunidad. Ella también ayudó a
desarrollar programas de liderazgo
juvenil y de mentores, incluyendo
Girlzpace, un programa después de
clases para las mujeres jóvenes de
Watsonville .
A lo largo de su vida y carrera la
comunidad le ha inspirado:
“Me siento inspirada por la gente que
trabaja para mejorar la comunidad.
A veces son personas a las cual
nunca tuve la oportunidad de
conocer, como Dolores Cruz Gómez, una de
las primeras latinas en Watsonville
que se postuló para el cargo cuando
era realmente difícil para los latinos
obtener asientos en el consejo de la
ciudad. Ella no ganó la carrera, pero
ella pasó a convertirse en la principal
demandante en el caso en contra de
la ciudad de Watsonville y ganó las
elecciones distritales, haciendo más
fácil para que fuera posible
postularme para el concejo municipal,
y ganar, muchos años más tarde”.
Karina explica cuándo surge su
interés en la política: “Estuve muy
involucrada en la política después de
la universidad; coordiné campañas de
inscripción de votantes, como trabajar
en las campañas del ayuntamiento y
de la junta escolar. La primera
alcaldesa Latina de Watsonville,
Ana Ventura Phares fue quien me nombró
a la Comisión de Parques y
Recreación de la Ciudad de
Watsonville, y fue cuando
comencé a pensar en
postularme para un cargo
político”.
Antes de ser elegida para
formar parte del Consejo de
la Ciudad de Watsonville,
Karina estuvo en la comisión de
planificación de la ciudad por dos
años. También ha estado en el Comité
del Condado de Santa Cruz para
Demócratas, el Grupo de Trabajo del
Condado de Chicas Santa Cruz, y
ha sido co-presidente del Grupo de
Acción del Condado de Santa Cruz de
Inmigración. También es profesora en
Cabrillo College, un colegio
comunitario en Santa Cruz y está
terminando un doctorado en
psicología en la Universidad de
California, Santa Cruz. Actualmente,
Karina se encuentra en varios comités
de la ciudad y del condado. Estos
incluyen el Consejo de Justicia Penal
del Condado de Santa Cruz, la Junta
de la Autoridad de Poderes Conjuntos
de Administración, la Comisión de
Relaciones Gube rn amentales
Ciudad / Condado / Escuela, y es
Vicepresidente interino de las
soluciones inteligentes para las
personas sin hogar Taskforce en el
Condado de Santa Cruz. Ella también
es una nueva miembro de la junta del
Comité Latino de la Liga de Ciudades
de California.
Karina quiere seguir sirviendo a su
comunidad como funcionaria electa y
su objetivo más inmediato es terminar
su doctorado. El consejo de Karina a la
comunidad: "El servicio público es muy
importante, no sólo para desarrollar y
mejorar sus habilidades en cualquier
campo que elijan para trabajar, pero
también te expone a nuevas ideas que
casi siempre abrirán puertas a nuevas
oportunidades. Por ejemplo, estar
involucrada en campañas y formar
parte de comisiones me permitió
entender cómo funciona el gobierno
local. Cuando se abrió una posición en
el Consejo me postulé porque el
trabajo que había hecho me había
preparado”. Karina le dice a la
comunidad: “Hay mucho trabajo que
todavía nos queda por hacer en
nuestros respectivos barrios. Hay que
ser voluntarios y conectarnos uno con
los otros, porque juntos podemos
construir una comunidad más fuerte
para todas nuestras familias”.
Por esto se galardona la tan
impresiónate carrera de esta humilde
mujer quien mantiene una gran
convicción en ayudar a su comunidad
a lo largo de su carrera. Paloma Revista

Karina Cervantez is the mayor for
the City of Watsonville, a dedicated
community volunteer, and a Ph.D.
candidate. Karina is born in Tulare,
California. She spends most of her
formative years in the small town
of Terra Bella, CA in the Central
Valley. In this small community,
her neighbors share a similar
experience to her parents,
immigrating to the United States in
the 1970s and early 1980s to
work. She shares: “We used to
travel to Oxnard quite regularly to
visit my father’s family who worked
in the strawberry industry, and
every couple of years, if we could get
permission from school, we would travel
to my parents’ home state of
Michoacán. Although my parents
worked very hard for very little money,
and money was always tight, I have
great memories of being surrounded by
aunts, uncles, cousins, lots of laughter,
and always a neighbor or a family
member looking after us”.
In her early years she attends Terra
Bella Elementary School, Car F. Smith
Middle School, and Porterville High
School. During her high school years,
she faces some struggles. She shares:
“I struggled a lot in high school. I almost
didn’t graduate on time”. She explains,
that her life would have been completely
different if a teacher had not helped
her the last few months. She tells us:
“He helped me get into community
college by helping me make an
appointment with an academic advisor.
This was an important step where I was
able to map out my 2 years at a
community college, so that I could
transfer to a four-year university”. Later,
she receives her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
degree and her master of science (M.S.)
in psychology from University of
California, Santa Cruz. She is currently
completing her doctoral (PhD) degree in
psychology also from the University of
California, Santa Cruz, where she has
published scholarly articles. Karina
proudly shares: “I have now earned my
bachelor’s degree, master’s degree,
and soon my doctorate, something that
at one point seemed impossible”.
The driving force and motivation
throughout Karina’s life has been
hardworking people. She explains:
“I am motivated to work hard because I
surround myself with people that also
work hard. My parents go to work
before the sun comes up, and have
to work in the rain, in the cold, and
sometimes in weather that can
reach temperatures above 100
degrees. And what they always told
me was that they worked that hard
so that all of us (my brother, sister,
and me) could have opportunities
with education they never did”.
Without a doubt her parents have
inspired Karina’s career and life.
She adds: “My parents are an
inspiration. They arrived to this
country with very little money,
knowing only a handful of people,
and now they are homeowners, have
supported three children through
college”.
All of Karina’s dedication has
been very fruitful. She is a young
academic and a prominent leader in the
community as the mayor for the City of
Watsonville. She proudly tells us: “I am
only the second Latina to have had the
opportunity to serve on the city council
and only the

Karina worked with YCORP, where she
worked directly with youth transitioning
from juvenile hall back into the
community. She also helped develop
youth leadership and mentorship
programs, including Girlzpace, an
afterschool program for young women
in Watsonville.
In her life and career her
community has inspired Karina:
“I am inspired by people who work to
improve the community. Sometimes
they are people I never had the
opportunity to meet, just like
Dolores Cruz Gomez, one of the first
Latinas in Watsonville to run for office
when it was really difficult for Latinos to
win city council seats. She didn’t win
her race, but she went on to become
the lead plaintiff in the case against the
city of Watsonville and sued to win
district elections, making it easier for
me to be able to run for city council,
and win, many years later”.
Karina explains her interest in
politics: “I got very involved in politics
after college; coordinating voter
registration drives as well as working
on city council and school board
campaigns. The first Latina mayor of
Watsonville, Ana Ventura Phares was the
one who appointed me to the Parks and
Recreation Commission for the City of
Watsonville where I first began
t h i n k i n g a b o u t r u n n i n g f o r
political office”.
Before being elected to serve on the
Watsonville City Council, Karina served
on the city’s planning commission for
two years. She has also served on the
Santa Cruz County Democratic Central
Committee, the Santa Cruz County Girls
Task Force, and as the co-chair of the
Santa Cruz County Immigration Action
Group. This past September, she was
appointed as a statewide at-large
delegate for President Barack Obama to
the Democratic National Convention in
Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also a
professor at Cabrillo College, a community
college in Santa Cruz and is finishing a
PhD in psychology at University of
California, Santa Cruz. Currently, Karina
sits on various city and county
committees. These include the Criminal
Justice Council of Santa Cruz County, the
Joint Powers Authority Board of Directors,
the City/ County/ School Governmental
Relations Committee, and as interim
Vice-Chair of the SMART Solutions to
Homelessness Taskforce for the County
of Santa Cruz. She is also a new board
member to the Latino Caucus of the California
League of Cities.
Karina wants to continue to serve her
community as an elected official and her
more immediate goal is to complete her
doctoral degree. Karina’s advice to the
c o m m u n i t y :
“Public service is very important, you not
only develop and enhance your skills in
whatever field you choose to work in, but
you are also exposed to new ideas that
will almost always open the door to new
opportunities. For example, being involved
in campaigns and sitting on commissions
allowed me to understand how local government
works. When a position on the
council opened up, I went for it because I
felt the work I had done had prepared me
well”. Karina also tells the community:
“There’s a lot of work still left
for us to do in our respective
neighborhoods. Volunteer
and connect with one
another, because together
we can build a stronger
community for all of
our families”.

amazing career of this
humble woman who has a
great belief in helping her
community throughout her

Sabemos que cada familia es un
mundo distinto y tiene un
lenguaje único y mantener una
familia unida no es cosa
sencilla, ya que es necesario
tener una buena comunicación
que genere un clima familiar
favorable. En este artículo verás
cómo lograr la unión familiar,
mediante una serie de consejos.
1.- Te Amo
Ningún ser humano puede sentirse realmente feliz hasta
escuchar que alguien le diga: “te amo”. Atrévete a decirlo a
la otra persona, a tu cónyuge, a tus padres, a tus hermanos,
a tus hijos, si es que nunca lo has hecho, haz la prueba y
verás el resultado.
2.- Te Admiro
En la familia, cada miembro tiene alguna
cualidad o habilidad que merece
reconocimiento: Todos, en algún momento,
sentimos la necesidad de que se nos
reconozca algún logro o meta alcanzada…
¿Cuándo fue la última vez que le dijiste
esto a alguien?
3.- ¡Gracias!
Una necesidad básica del ser humano es la de ser
apreciado. No hay mejor forma de decir a una persona
que es importante lo que hace por nosotros, que expresarle
un ¡gracias!, no en forma mecánica, sino con pleno calor
humano.
4.- Perdóname, me equivoqué
Decir esto no es tan fácil, sin embargo, cuando
cometas un error que ofenda o perjudique a
otras personas, aprende a decir con
madurez: “perdóname, me equivoqué”.
5.- Ayúdame, te necesito
Cuando no podemos o no queremos admitir o
expresar nuestra fragilidad o necesidad de otros,
estamos en un grave problema. No te reprimas. ¡Pide ayuda!
Que también son muy importantes las palabras.
6.- ¡Te escucho…Háblame de tí!
¿Cuántas veces le has dicho a algún miembro de tu familia:
“A ver, háblame, qué te pasa?”. Tal vez muchos problemas
y mal entendidos se resolverían si tan sólo escuchásemos
lo Que nos tratan de decir.
7.- ¡Eres especial!
Es importante hacerles saber a tus seres queridos cuanto
ellos significan para ti.
Por último defienda y busque su tiempo de familia
realizando actividades que fomenten la comunicación y
desarrollo individual y familiar, alternando que sean al gusto
de cada uno. Establezcan tradiciones propias, por ejemplo,
tratar de tener al menos una comida juntos, salir a pasear
un día entre semana, ver una película el domingo,
inculque valores y pero por favor practíquelos.

some point, feel the need to be recognized
for some achievement or goal achieved...

3 -Thanks!
A basic human need is to be appreciated. There
is no better way to tell a person that what they do for
us is important, then expressing one thanks!,

Emilio Pettoruti nace en la ciudad de
La Plata, el 1 de octubre de 1892.
Pintor y escritor argentino,
manteniendo un equilibrio inestable
entre abstracción y representación.
Es difícil, sin embargo, clasificar su
obra.Tras estudiar bellas artes en su
ciudad natal, Emilio Pettoruti inició su
actividad como caricaturista. Becado
por el gobierno de la provincia de
Buenos Aires, se trasladó a Italia en
1913 y allí estudió pintura e historia
del arte en Florencia; en Italia conoció
y recibió el influyo de los futuristas,
con los que organizó algunas
exposiciones, pero también recorrió
los museos del país, estudiando a los
maestros renacentistas. Con
posterioridad trabó contacto con las
más importantes tendencias vanguardistas de la época
en Francia, Austria y Alemania, países en los que
realizó nuevas exposiciones. De regreso a la Argentina,
introdujo en los círculos pictóricos, su creación en
obras y se convirtió en uno de los más notables
representantes de esta tendencia en el ámbito
hispanoamericano. En Argentina fundó y dirigió la
revista Crónica de Arte y fue por dos veces director del
Museo de Bellas Artes de La Plata. En 1941 visitó los
Estados Unidos, donde dio a conocer su creación en
diversas exposiciones organizadas por el Museo de
Arte de San Francisco. Regresa en 1952 a Europa,
luego de haber expuesto en 1950 en el Museo
Nacional de Bellas Artes de Chile. Expone en Milán y
en Florencia luego de casi treinta años de ausencia.
Continúa exponiendo en años sucesivos; en 1953 en Roma,
en 1954 en París, junto con Latour, Masson y Miró. Recibe
en 1956 el premio Continental Guggenheim de las Américas
y con él el derecho a concurrir al Premio Mundial que se
otorga en París; lo gana Ben Nicholson, la crítica mundial
esperaba una decisión en favor de Beaudín, Tamayo o
Pettoruti. Continúa su obra a lo largo de los años y
realizando con ellas notables exposiciones; en 1960 en la
Molton Gallery de Londres, el Walker Art Center de
Minneápolis, Denise René de París, etc. En 1964 comienza
a escribir sus memorias que publicará en 1966 con el título
"Un pintor ante el espejo". El 16 de octubre de 1972,
muere en París.
Y el 1 de octubre 2013 en Google Doodle Argentina le dio un homenaje
al pintor y escritor, Argentino Emilio Pettoruti.

Teresa Margolles es una artista de performance,
fotógrafa, y escultura. Ella nace en Culiacán, Sinaloa en
1963. En los últimos años, esta artista mexicana explora
la muerte. En concreto, explora los cuerpos en la
morgue. Recientemente, su trabajo se ha dirigido en
cómo las muertes han cambiado en México debido a la
guerra del narco. Es decir, esta guerra ha sacado la
muerte fuera del espacio privado de la morgue y la ha
puesto en espacios públicos en las calles de la ciudad.
Antes de explorar este tipo de arte ella que se
gradúa con un diploma de médica forense en los años
noventa y comienza a trabajar en la morgue. En un
artículo de Contemporary Art, explican lo siguiente de
su arte, "La violencia es una parte integral de la vida
diaria”: el dolor y la muerte son temas constantes en la
obra de la artista mexicana Teresa Margolles.
La exposición Museion explora los asesinatos y las
desapariciones en la ciudad Juárez: un elemento central
de su presentación es una pared con agujeros de bala
dejadas por los asesinos. A primera vista, sus obras a
menudo parecen ser minimalista en su forma.

Teresa Margolles is a performance artist,

a city can endure. She shows places with no future,
in which even young people grasp the futility of their
situation”.

Las manos son nuestra tarjeta de visita y
un mal cuidado de ellas, delata nuestra
edad. Siguiendo cuidados básicos,
podemos conseguir alargar la juventud,

El paciente, seguía en el piso sobre sus
recortes como esperpento abúlico. Pensaba sin hacer nada.
En vida, en vi darse, envidiarse, en vida, vida darse, dar vida,
envidiar, enviadme, envídienme, los envidié, envidiados.
Me envidiaron: dolerse del bien ajeno, desear o apetecer lo que
tienen otros, es un sentimiento o estado mental en el cual existe
dolor o desdicha por no poseer uno mismo lo que tiene el otro,
sea en bienes, cualidades superiores u otra clase de cosas.
Pero siempre fui envidioso de todos aquellos que no tuvieron
que visitar al doctor, a todos aquellos que nunca sintieron la
necesidad de alterar o eliminar aspectos de su memoria, de su
vida, siempre tuve todo, de una manera u otra y ustedes me
envidiaron, la envidia justifica todo, así como la lógica de las
leyes, así como las palabras de la ley, nos segó la envidia, me
llevó a querer olvidarlo todo, por qué los envidio, envidio su
pasado pero no su presente, aborrezco sus presentes, me
desdicha sus realidades, en vida, en vi darse, en vida, vida
darse, dar vida, envidiar, envídiame, envídienme, los envidié,
envidiados. Me envidiaron.
El paciente repetía ese pensamiento, lo mantenía en replay
como un disco rayado, como coro de una canción popular que
no quieres recordar pero por más que lo intentes la melodía
sigue repitiéndose, exiliándose en la mente. En vida, en vi darse,
envidiarse, en vida, vida darse, dar vida, envidiar, enviadme,
envídienme, los envidie, envidiados. Me envidiaron. El paciente
sin pensar, sin darse cuenta terminaba desbaratando palabras,
haciéndolas y deshaciéndolas, como pequeñas piezas de un
rompe cabeza mal armado, distorsionado, las palabras siempre
fueron como juguetes, él siempre les otorgaba su propio
significado. Por eso, las palabras, la combinación de palabras
del paciente fueron absurdas, él se dejaba llevar por el sonido
y significado de las palabras. Buscaba palabras en las mismas
palabras. En vida, en vi darse, envidiarse, en vida, vida darse,
dar vida, envidiar, enviadme, envídienme, los envidié,
envidiados. Me envidiaron.
La palabra justicia siempre fue como la envidia pero
nosotros siempre fuimos los envidiados. Nos envidiamos para
sobrevivir, nos reducimos a significados y nos disminuimos
valor para darnos importancia, nos faltamos al respeto por
justicia porque tú siempre tuviste más que yo, eso no me lo
merecía, ni me lo merecí, pero tú tampoco, tú tampoco te
mereciste la justicia de los demás, nunca tuviste que pagar por
esa envidia, pues sí, así fue todo en vida, en vi darse, envidiarse,
en vida, vida darse, dar vida, envidiar, enviadme, envídienme,
los envidié, envidiados. Me envidiaron.
Ustedes nunca supieron por qué los envidié y aunque me
imaginé porque me envidiaron nunca estuve seguro, pero todo
eso ya no importa, pronto, en vida eliminaré la envidia solo
conoceré la justicia, pronto pasaremos de los envidiados a los
olvidados
Ṡiempre con sus malditas sonrisas como pequeños
muñecos de plástico los aborrecí, siempre con su maldita ropa
planchada, limpia, aseada, siempre sin ninguna preocupación
siempre todo tan detallado siempre todo tan organizado,
siempre sin tener que preocuparse por el futuro, pues su
presente era tan reconocido como su ayer que su ayer siempre
fue como su mañana, todo tan parecido.
Sí, los envidié por eso me envidiaron por mi libertad,
por mi ir y venir por mi falta de reglas. Pero saben, mi ayer no
siempre fue como mi mañana, los días siempre variaron, los
lugares cambiaban, todo no siempre era igual, las personas que
entraban y salían de mi vida iban y venían como olas del mar,
siempre se iban pero alguien siempre venía, esa era lo única
constancia, pero me acostumbré a la inconstancia, me
acostumbré a ese falta de orden, a esa abundancia de caos,
crecí, me hice fuerte, me hice de reglas, hice que mi mañana
pareciera una copia de mi ayer, para sobrevivir para sobresalir
por eso los envidié. Por eso, siempre nos envidiamos. Sobre viví,
vivir sobre la superficie, esto es sobre el vivir, esto es sobre
vividos, esto es muy sobre vivido, muy repetido, muy aburrido,
muy redundante esto de sobrevivir en vida, en vi darse,
envidiarse, en vida, vida darse, dar vida, envidiar, enviadme,
envídienme, los envidie, envidiados. Me envidiaron.
Por eso, por eso decidí borrar, decidí eliminarlo todo
para hacer un nuevo presente. Hay que reconstruir el pasado,
quizá eliminarlo todo en vida, envidiarnos para sobrevivir esto
aquí es de sobre vividos, de los envidiosos de la vida, dar vida,
desenvidiemos, dejemos de sobrevivir envidiándonos.
Envidiados borrémosla, borremos la envidia de nuestras
memorias para sobresalir y sobrevivir. CONTINUARA…...
SCHOOL BOY: A MEMOIR
Chapter 1

I turned 28 today, and for some reason, now, seems like the
best time to write this for you all to read. I always knew I would
write aspects of my experience, but I was never sure how the
story was going to unfold, or whose story I was going to tell.
Now, I realize that I must first tell my story, what I remember,
what I have chosen to remember as a Salinas Valley bookworm
turned scholarship boy; another brown face on those college
brochures and computer screens that scream diversity and
multiculturism. On those computer screens, I saw myself as
another brown skin body, smiling, always thankful and grateful
for the opportunity to leave this rural barrio in the Central Coast
to achieve a dream. It all began in Salinas, perhaps it was the
late 80s or the early 90s because like Estrella in Helena
Viramontes, Under the Feet of Jesus, my family and I moved a
lot, constancy, so much that it’s too difficult to keep track.
All I know is that by the time I graduated from elementary
school, I had gone to school in Gonzalez and in Salinas to Cesar
Chávez, Jesse G. Sánchez, Lincoln, and Los Padres
Elementary. Every time, my sister and I talk about all these
schools we went to, she reminds me that she also went to
Frank Paul and Freemont Elementary. Wait, perhaps I should
back track a little more. The biggest move, perhaps the one that
impacted the rest of my life the most was when mamá decided
to leave Michoacán to come to the United States. From what I
am told, I was a bit over a year old, and my sister was just a
baby. I don’t remember much from this time period, but I do
remember wondering what life in Mexico would have been like
instead of California. Would I speak better Spanish? Would I not
know English? Would I only listen to banda and corridos? Ride a
motorcycle? Would I be married by now with a bunch of kids?
Would I speak like a fresa and have an utter distaste and
disgust for anything rural like banda and corridos, and instead
adopt the lifestyle of what I think living in America is, what I
think being rich means? Would I watch American television
and only listen to bands like Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Radiohead,
Depeche Mode, or Coldplay? Or would I be smoking pot at
tocadas with other aspiring young musicans who want to break
away from conventions, and listen to music and play rock en
español. I guess, this does not matter, as I spent all of my
formative years in Salinas. I find myself now, like Sandra
Cisnero’s Eleven, on my 28 birthday, but like her character I
find myself saying, “What they don’t understand about
birthdays and what they never tell you is that when you’re
eleven, you’re also ten, and nine, and eight, and seven, and six,
and five, and four, and three, and two, and one. And when you
wake up on your eleventh birthday you expect to feel eleven,
but you don’t. You open your eyes and everything’s just like
yesterday, only it’s today. And you don’t feel eleven at all. You
feel like you’re still ten. And you are—underneath the year that
makes you eleven”. Proust’s character used a madelline to
remember and write, well I ate that madelline and read too
many books, and all I have to tell will be somehow be linked to
very important books. Not important books because the past
has told us or the cannon, or because they are part of a New
York Times best selling list. All of these books are important
because I read them, non stop, and in that process I changed a
bit, or at least my perception of reality was altered or perhaps
the way I saw myself (mis)fit within the reality around me.
Sometimes, with books I find imaginery worlds were things are
different, then the strange world I am a part of isn’t so strange,
other times when I read them my perception of what I thought
my world was changes and afterwards reality seems to be
stranger and more complicated. I am not here to tell you to read
or the importance of reading like a librarian, although I agree
with librarians, but I am simply here to share my story, my
hardships, all these things I have chosen to remember, all the
painful and difficult things, the funny and random things, the
political and passionate things that I have experienced.
Today, on my 28 birthday I am also, twenty-seven,
twenty-six, twenty-five, twenty-four, twenty-three, twenty-two,
twenty-one, twenty, nineteen, eighteen, seventeen, sixteen,
fifteen, fourteen, thirteen, twelve, eleven, ten, nine, eight,
seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one. Its a lot when you
write them all out, right. It seems like yesterday when Ms.
Jones, my second grade teacher would hand us a salted
cracker with penuntbutter, right after the first recess and right
before story time. The stories from her books poured out of her
mouth and onto our ears, most of the students fell asleep,
but I didn’t. I couldn’t. I always wanted to hear about Cliffords
adventures and especially Corduroy. Yup, Courfuroy’s story was
definitely my favorite. CONTINUE…...

JUNTOS PODEMOS
SE PARTE DE LA SOLUCIÓN
La Comunidad de Salinas se dio cita en el Centro
Estudiantil del Colegio Hartnell el pasado 15 de marzo,
en el que más de 20 agencias estuvieron presentes para
proveer información a los que acudieron.
El cuarto Diálogo Comunitario de Juntos Podemos tuvo
como tema en esta ocasión “Los valores familiares”, en
el que se hizo énfasis sobre la importancia de demostrar
amor en el hogar, sobre todo hacia los hijos. El foro
incluyo presentaciones de ex pandillero John Pineda,
quien compartió su historia, la cual es un reflejo sobre
la lucha constante de la juventud de hoy en día al querer
ser parte de su familia. Su mensaje fue impactante y
honesto. Él ahora es un consejero para los jóvenes:
les habla sobre las alternativas proactivas que existen para
llevar una vida fructífera en su comunidad.
El oficial Raúl Rosales con su presentación señaló que
el amor de padres es lo más importante cuando se trata
de los hijos y cómo es que deben invertir su tiempo en
ellos para guiarlos por el buen camino. El mensaje fue
claro: los regalos y el libertinaje, no ayudan cuando se
intenta ganarse el respeto de los hijos. Por otra parte el
expositor Jaime Molina con su mensaje de la Cultura
Cura, recordó a los presentes lo importante que es el
rescatar la cultura y forjar en la familia valores que ayuden
a crear un ambiente lleno de respeto y paz primeramente
en el hogar para después aplicarlo en
la sociedad que vivimos.
Además, en el evento se contó con la participación de
panel de expertos en diferentes áreas para responder
la sesión de preguntas y respuestas por parte de la
audiencia, con la finalidad de encontrar posibles
soluciones a la problemática de la violencia por falta
de valores familiares en nuestra comunidad.

The Fourth Community Dialogue for Juntos Podemos
had the theme "Family Values" targeting the
importance of love at home and keeping your children
aware of how much you care for them as parents.
The forum included presentations from ex-gang
member John Pineda who shared his story that
resonates with the youth of today and their struggle
to be part of a 'family.' His message was strong and
honest. He is now what can be called a 'youth
counselor' providing others with alternatives
to life on the streets.
For the audience, Officer Raul Rosales' presentation
was eye-opening. Parents need to understand that
'love' is the most important thing when dealing with
their children and they need to invest time on their
kids. Gifts and liberties are not good when wanting
to gain the kids' respect, it all comes down to love.
In the end, a panel of experts in different areas were

Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica:
227-Confiar en Dios en todas la circunstancias.
(II Corintios 8:9) 9. Ya conocen la generosidad de Cristo Jesús, nuestro
señor, que, siendo rico se hiso pobre por vosotros, para que su
pobreza los hiciera ricos.
Cristo Jesús es muy generoso, el se hiso pobre para darnos todas las
cosas que necesitamos. El mismo señor Jesucristo deseo darnos la
prosperidad integral, espiritual, física y material. Tener buena salud
así como prosperidad en NUESTRA ALMA, porque el vino a darnos
vida y vida en abundancia..
Si aceptamos a Cristo en nuestro corazón, el nos ofrece el espíritu santo en
plenitud, es muy importante prosperar íntegramente de nada serviría, que
yo tuviera mucho dinero y buena salud pero perdiera el alma o al contrario
tuviera mucho dinero y espiritualidad pero no tuviera salud, no podría
disfrutar de las bendiciones, lo mismo si mi salud fuera mala y mi
espiritualidad envidiable, pero si no tuviera dinero ni para ayudar a mi
familia seria contradictorio a la misericordia de Dios.
Por ejemplo en (Job 1:1) en los primeros capítulos nos dice que
Dios le había prosperado íntegramente, dinero en todas las áreas,
en su familia, espiritualmente, en TODO Dios le dio todo a Job.
Y de verdad hermano esto pasa con los hijos de Dios.
Pero el diablo siente envidia y busca la forma de robar las
bendiciones a los hijos de Dios, quiere destruirnos, vernos fracasados,
física y espiritualmente, robarnos las bendiciones como se las robo
a Job. Destruyendo su familia, su salud y su prosperidad.
Pero Jesucristo nos dice: (Juan 10:10 ) 10-El ladrón sólo viene a robar,
matar y destruir, mientras que yo he venido para que tengan vida y la
tengan en plenitud. Entonces, pidámosle a Dios con todo nuestro
corazón que Dios sea el centro de nuestra vida, el centro de nuestra
familia de TODO absolutamente de TODO.
Gracias, papa Dios te amo!!.
PROPÓSITO DEL MES:
-Este mes rezaré todas las noches pidiéndole fortaleza a Dios y
confiaré mis penas, mis preocupaciones, mis perdidas, mis dolores, mis
problemas, mis enfermedades TODO en manos de mi Padre Dios.

Trust in God
Catechism of the Catholic Church:
227- Trusting God in all the circumstances.
(II Corinthians 8:9 ) 9. You know the generosity of Christ Jesus
our Lord, who, being rich made himself poor for our sake, so
that his poverty would make them rich.
Jesus Christ is very generous, he made himself poor to give us
everything we need. He same Lord Jesus Christ will give us the
integral, spiritual, physical and material prosperity. Good
health and prosperity in OUR SOUL, because he came to give
us life and life in abundance ..
If we accept Christ into our hearts, he offers the Holy Spirit,
it is important to fully thrive or there is no point, If had lots of
money and good health but lost my soul or the contrary had
much money and spirituality but did not have health, I could
not enjoy the blessings, as if my health was bad and my
enviable spirituality, but I have no money to help my family,
that would be contradictory to God's mercy .
For example, in ( Job 1:1 ) the first chapters tells us that God
had prospered him l, money in all areas, in his family,
spiritually, in ALL God gave Job everything. And this brothers,
really happens to the children of God. But the devil is envious
and looking for ways to steal the blessings from the children of
God, he wants to destroy us, see us fail , physically and
spiritually, to steal the blessings as he did to Job.
Destroying his family, his health and prosperity.
But Jesus tells us (John 10:10) 10 - e thief comes only to steal
and kill and destroy, while I have come so you may have life and
have it abundantly. Then, we ask God with all our hearts for him
to be the center of our lives, the center of our family absolutely
EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING.
Thank you, Father God I love you!.

-This month I will pray every night to God for strength and
trust my sorrows, my worries, my losses, my pain, my problems,
my illnesses EVERYTHING in the

¿SABIAS QUE?
Las abejas viven en sociedades organizadas y cada una cumple
una función vital para la colonia las tareas se asignan por
edades a los pocos días de vida, una abeja se dedica a limpiar
las celdas de la colmena, una abeja con alrededor de 15 días
de vida produce cera, transporta alimento y otras funciones
similares. Cuando tienen 20 días de edad las abejas pueden
convertirse en guardianas de la colmena. A los 40 días,
aproximadamente, ya recogen néctar, polen y agua, así como
también polinizan plantas. No siempre mueren al clavar su
aguijón: pueden picar a otros insectos o plantas sin
necesariamente perder el aguijón y la vida. Sus métodos de
comunicación son inteligentes: Una abeja puede comunicarle
al resto de la colonia la ubicación de una fuente de
alimento mediante una danza en el aire.
Son insectos tan inteligentes que los científicos
han descubierto que saben que la tierra es redonda.
Grandes productoras: Una sola colonia de abejas
puede elaborar alrededor de 27 kilos de miel,
para producir sólo medio kilo de miel, las abejas
de una colmena deberán visitar más de dos
millones de flores. Tienen sangre fría:
Sin embargo, pueden generar calor al hacer
vibrar su cuerpo, si una abeja se encuentra
bajo la lluvia o en un clima frío, pierde su
capacidad de moverse.

¿Qué son los valores familiares?/ What are family values?
Los Valores familiares: Es en la familia
donde se enseñan los primeros valores;
valores que serán sustento para la vida en
sociedad y a lo largo de la vida de la persona.
Sobresalen los siguientes:
La alegría: Es un valor que se siembra. En el
fondo lo que se fomenta es dejar el egoísmo
a un lado, buscando el bien y compartir con el
otro. Cuando nos centramos en nuestras
preocupaciones y no estamos dispuestos a
ayudar a los que nos rodean somos egoístas.
El egoísta no suele ser una persona alegre.
Es en este darse a los demás miembros de la
familia donde se obtiene la alegría. La alegría
no depende de las circunstancias o de las
facilidades que puede presentar la vida y
tampoco consiste en tener cosas. Este valor
tiene su fundamento en lo profundo de la
persona, no es sino la consecuencia de una
vida equilibrada, de una coherencia entre lo
que pensamos y lo que hacemos, el tener una
mente y un cuerpo sanos.
La generosidad: Entendiendo por generosidad
el actuar en favor de otras personas
desinteresadamente y con alegría. Hacer algo por
otras personas puede traducirse de diferentes
maneras, por ejemplo, dar cosas, prestar juguetes,
dar tiempo para escuchar y atender a otro
miembro de la familia, saludar, perdonar. Se notará
una actitud generosa en una persona que se
esfuerza por hacer la vida agradable a los demás
miembros de la familiar.
El respeto: Es el respeto hacia los demás miembros, no sólo
respeto a la persona misma, sino también a sus opiniones y
sentimientos. Respeto hacia las cosas de los demás miembros,
respeto a su privacidad, respeto a sus decisiones, éstas, por
supuesto, adecuadas a la edad de la persona. Es en la familia
donde el niño aprende que tanto él o ella como sus ideas y
sentimientos merecen respeto y son valorados.
La justicia: Se fomenta al establecerse lo que corresponde a
cada miembro de la misma. Recordemos que la justicia
consiste en dar a cada uno lo que les corresponde. Una
persona que se esfuerza constantemente por respetar los
derechos de los demás y le da a cada uno lo que debe, tiene
la virtud de la justicia.
La responsabilidad: Supone asumir las consecuencias de los
propios actos, no solo ante uno mismo sino ante los demás.
Para que una persona pueda ser responsable tiene que ser
consciente de sus deberes y obligaciones, es por ello, de gran
importancia que los hijos tengan sus responsabilidades y
obligaciones muy claras.
La lealtad: Surge cuando se reconocen y aceptan vínculos que
nos unen a otros, de tal manera que se busca fortalecer y
salvaguardar dichos vínculos así como los valores que
representan. Es en la familia donde surgen y se fortalecen
este tipo de vínculos, por ejemplo, Se muestra lealtad entre los
hermanos al apoyarse, defenderse y ayudarse ante las
dificultades, ante la amenaza de personas o circunstancias
ajenas a la familia. Conviene aclarar que ser leal a los papás,
no significa aprobar una conducta errónea.
La autoestima: Es uno de los valores fundamentales para el
ser humano maduro, equilibrado y sano. Se entiende por
autoestima la visión más profunda que cada persona tiene
de sí misma, influye de modo decisivo en las elecciones y en
la toma de decisiones desde niños vamos construyendo el
concepto de nosotros mismos de acuerdo a los mensajes
recibidos de nuestros padres, hermanos, familiares, amigos y
maestros. Es la suma de la autoconfianza. Ésta se basa en la
variedad de pensamientos, sentimientos, experiencias y
sensaciones que hemos ido acumulando a lo largo de nuestra
vida, pero principalmente a lo largo de nuestra infancia y
adolescencia. Si queremos construir una personalidad fuerte y
equilibrada, es de vital importancia que como padres hagamos
sentir a nuestros hijos que son dignos de ser queridos con un
amor incondicional, es decir, no condicionado a su
comportamiento, calificaciones o actitudes. Elevar la
autoestima de nuestros hijos es de vital importancia, ya que
contribuimos a que desarrolle la convicción de que es estimado
y valorado, que es competente para enfrentarse a la vida con
confianza y optimismo, y que es merecedor de la felicidad.

member, greet, forgive. A generous attitude will be noticed
in a person who strives to make life pleasant for
the other members of the family.
Respect: Respect the other members not only respect for the
individual, but also their opinions and feelings. Respect for the
things of the other members, respect for their privacy, respect
their decisions, these, of course, appropriate to the age of the
person. It is in the family where the child learns that he or she
and their ideas and feelings deserve respect and are valued.
Justice: is promoted by establishing what corresponds to
each member thereof. Recall that justice consists in giving to
each what they deserve. A person who is constantly striving
to respect the rights of others and gives every one his due,
has the virtue of justice.
Responsibility: Assumes bear the consequences of one's
actions, not only to yourself but to others. For a person to be

Loyalty: arises when recognized and accepted , ties that bind

self-confidence. This is based on the variety of thoughts,
feelings, experiences and feelings that we have accumulated
throughout our lives, but mainly throughout our childhood and
adolescence. If you want to build a strong and balanced
personality, it is vital that as parents we make our children feel
that they are worthy to be loved with an unconditional love
that is not conditional on their behavior, skills or attitudes.
