P A G E 2 On May 21, 2012, at the regular Board of Education meeting, the Board recognized and honored those who will be retiring from the Crestview Local Schools. Those retiring are: We would like to thank these six individuals for their dedication and service to the students, parents, and staff of Crestview Local Schools. All will be missed and are wished the very best in their retirements. Luke Grauer, Megan Shoup, Lindsey Shoup, Katlyn Hulit & Caity Campbell T H E C R E S T V I E W Dorothy Swineford – 40 Years of Service Transportation Kathie Wildman – 36 Years of Service Teaching Connie Oswalt – 34 Years of Service Teaching Sylvia Patrlja – 30 Years of Service Teaching Rita Burgess – 24 Years of Service Transportation Rita Brandon – 12 Years of Service Teaching Crestview FFA and FFA Alumni News State Convention—Perhaps one of the best things about being an FFA member is wearing corduroy jackets in hot weather. Crestview FFA battled the heat on May 3 rd and 4 th in official dress at the 84 th State FFA Convention at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. The members departed from Crestview High School Thursday morning attended a leadership workshop and the first session of the convention. At this session Crestview FFA member, Abby Motter, was recognized for placing 4 th at state in extemporaneous public speaking. Afterwards, members checked in their hotel and enjoyed swimming in the indoor pool. Later the students ate dinner at Champs before they visited the OSU Planetarium at Smith Laboratories. At the planetarium members got to view stars, constellations and planets that can be seen in the night sky. On Friday, members attended sessions three, four, and five the of State Convention. During these sessions Crestview FFA was recognized as a Gold Medal Chapter. To receive this award a chapter must fulfill certain requirements set by the National FFA Association and be heavily involved with the community. Several members also received recognition, 2011-2012 Crestview FFA Officer, Gretchen Sauder, received a gold star rating for her treasurer book and fellow officer, Garrett Searl, also received a gold star rating for his secretary book. Also being recognized were members who received their state degree. This year five Crestview FFA Members received their state degrees, they are: Caity Campbell; Megan Shoup; Lindsay Shoup; Luke Grauer; and, Katlyn Hulit. Receiving a State Degree is a high honor in the FFA. To receive a state degree members must invest and earn money in their SAE, participate in community service, develop leadership skills and be active in their FFA chapter. Despite the heat, Crestview FFA Members had a good time attending the State Convention. The Crestview FFA Alumni through the Living Legacy Fund awarded over 5,000 dollars in scholarships during its banquet on Thursday, April 19. The Crestview FFA Alumni started the Living Legacy Fund in 2001 and through the generous memorial donations and Alumni Fundraisers the fund has grown by 400%. Currently there has been seven memorial scholarships established. Those receiving scholarships this year, they are: Caity Campbell—Le - Mac Scholarship; Carey Fulk—Clarence Fulk Scholarship; Garrett Searl—“Duke” White Scholarship; Elizabeth Bernhard—John Sherrick Scholarship; Morgan Walter, Melanie Fitch, and Kerri Wacker— Genieva Spoerr Scholarship; Janey Fulk, Jed Sauder, and Abe Sauder— Emery and Dorothy Grauer Scholarship; Jeb May, Loren Hulit, and Alicia Metzger—Ivan Esbenshade Scholarship. Congratulations to all scholarship recipients! The Crestview FFA and FFA Alumni are seeking volunteers to work the FFA Steak Trailer and the Firelands Farmer booth during the Richland County Fair, August 5-11, 2012. If you are interested in helping please HS Report Cards And Schedule Pick-Up Dates Final high school report cards can be picked up starting on June 18, 2012, during summer office hours: Monday—Thurs. 7:00 AM—4:30 PM Friday 7-11:00 AM 2012-13 Class Schedules can be picked up starting on August 16, 2012 during Meet The Teams and Open House starting at 6:00 PM. Schedules may also be picked up during regular school office hours. Crestview FFA Consignment Sale—Volunteers, donations and consignment items are needed for the consignment sale on Labor Day weekend. V O L U M E 2 0 1 1 - 1 2 , I S S U E 6 Crestview High School P A G E 3 Crestview HS News ~ Mr. Scott Will, Principal The 2011-2012 school year saw a great deal of transition at the high school with a new schedule, building initiatives and the simple fact that the year flew by with a virtually non-existent winter. Once again the high school saw success on the OGT’s and we continue to look at ways to improve our scores while focusing on the upcoming changes to end-ofcourse exams and the new Common Core standards adopted by the State of Ohio. This fall we will kick off the year with our 2nd Annual Meet the Team/Open House on Thursday, August 16, 2012 starting at the high school stadium at 6:00 PM. The FIT partners with many of our local social service agencies and local churches. The team was formed eight years ago with the goal of helping students and families meet their needs at home so that our students could come to school ready to learn. The FIT team meets several times throughout the school year to discuss how we can best meet needs for Crestview families, our schools, and the community. Through our partnerships, we gain knowledge of many resources that are available that we can then share with families who can benefit from them. These partnerships and organizations also have helped our families in many other way ways including: boy’s group leaders, school supplies, holiday gift-giving & meals, clothing, rent and utility assistance, food pantry, home weatherization, home repairs, camp memberships, transportation assistance, gas cards for families with hospitalized children, summer programming, counseling services, case management, winter coats, shoes, dictionaries, food and snacks for Family Nights and so much more. We are honored to receive this gift from the Class of 2012. Their legacy of kindness and generosity will go far in continuing to strengthen families and the Crestview community.
