It is an artwork which has to be performed with great delicacy. The embroidery has to be done
on a variety of textile fabrics like muslin, silk, chiffon, organza, net, etc. Initially, it was done only
with the white thread, which is embroidered on cool, pastel shades of light muslin and cotton
garments.
But now, to catch up the trend and be updated, the Chikan embroidery is also done with colored
silk threads too. Though, the suits are now available across the world, Lucknow is considered as
the heart of the Chikankari industry
As all the workmanship is hand embroidery which has to be done by the skilled workers, the
Chikan embroidery continues to be practiced as a handicraft. Chikan perfectly suits to those
ho love the royal attire.
The patterns and effected created depend on the type of stitches used on a particular garment
and therefore it gives a fresh look. The quality of the embroidery depends on the fabric, the
finer it is, the exclusive the embroidery. A few of the varieties which are commonly used are
shadow work, funda, Ghas patti etc.
With the variety of fabrics, many manufacturers offer unique Chikan to men, women and kids
too.
